Such an iconic movie. Anthony Hopkins & Jodie Foster were absolutely brilliant. My favorite thriller/horror of all time. Ted Levine was also fantastic.
@Clo J That's what makes Mads better. He doesn't want you to see that he is a tarantula. He's a far more accurate portrayal of a psychopathic serial killer. Not only that, Mads is also a more accurate version of Hannibal Lecter from the books than Hopkins. Read the books and you will see. I just recently watched Silence... after a decade plus years since the last time I watched it. I never truly appreciated Ted Levine's performance before -- he was so very, very good at being very, very creepy.
You actually forgot to talk about the house used for the final sequence. The story behind it, how it was picked and what happened to it afterwards is actually a great story. Check it out.
His gun can cast a shadow in total darkness....because total darkness is very bright. There's all sorts of invisible light moving through space at any given time, the source just has to be at the right frequency and angle to cast a shadow that night vision goggles (which use infrared) will pick up.
Joe V, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Word is the unofficial sequel made by The Asylum. It follows Scott after Ramona disappears, he starts looking for her until he realises that she is not lost, he is. Anyways Scott does some Word related stuff. The End.
We tend to forget Ted Levine’s performance as Buffalo Bill. With his deep voice and physical looks he deserved recognition. Remember him as the captain on tvs Monk.
Yup. "Starlight scopes" can use, well, starlight, as an illumination source. This is handy on the battlefield, because if your goggles have an enormous IR floodlight attached, anyone wearing a similar pair will be able to see it. But they wouldn't work in a cellar where there's just about no light at all. So Jaime would need to be wearing an IR illuminator. Whether that's visible in the film I can't remember, I'm not well familiar with the design of them. In that case, it depends where the illuminator is, relative to the gun. IRL it was presumably shot with an ordinary camera in ordinary white light, and tinted green / had the levels messed with afterwards. The light would usually be above and behind Jaime's shoulder. And I'm not going to buy T-shirts off some chancer who thinks by just stealing tiny pieces of a copyrighted film, he can get away with making money selling them. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for copyright theft, but you're a dick if you charge someone for it. There's dozens of companies doing these, reproducing logos from cult films, or inventing their own for companies in films. Pathetic imagination-free shysters. Great film though!
number 7 is completely wrong it was pitch black in the basement so the nvg's wouldn't work without the ir beam coming from the goggles...so it would cast a shadow
@Danny Stowers well yeah obviously otherwise the camera couldn't have picked up anything... the shot is for suspense purposes.. the room itself, in the movie, IS pitch black otherwise Clarice would've seen him
If it's pitch black, at least with the night vision that I've used, you need an IR illuminator. With the NV that I currently own, it has a built in illuminator that puts off a bit of visible red light. It's not mil-spec stuff - maybe they have better filters on the illuminators or work off of lower bandwidths. In any case, if you don't have light you can't see. You can see better in low light with night vision but you still need light. If you don't use an illuminator and you're in, for example, a cave and you have night vision, you still won't be able to see. Outside hunting with a quarter moon - you can see just fine.
Jodie Foster is timeless. Her hairstyle and clothing always seems to be right in line with whatever time it was or is today. Lamb’s was going to use Michelle Pfeiffer instead with her totally horrible 80s big hairdo which would’ve ruined the classic styling of this movie. Look at other Jodie Foster movies and it will be obvious. Short, smart, straight hair & classic clothing works 100% of the time ladies!
Night vision allows you to use infrared light for the goggles to pick up. This means you can cast shadows with an infrared light, a light that you normally can't see very easily. This is certainly not a mistake.
Right? I don’t know shit about infaRed goggles but just thinking about it… your seeing protected light, and light would still have a shadow. I don’t know maybe I’m talking out of my ass🤣
It rubs the lotion on its skin. It does this whenever it's told. It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again. Yes, it will, Precious. It will get the hose. OK, OK. Now it places the lotion in the basket. It places the lotion in the basket. Put the fucking lotion in the basket! #NiceShirt
#7 is fine, night vision amplifies light up to 40,000 times. If there's no light at all they don't work. So most NVG's have a small IR light built in to create it's own light. So the shadows are realistic.
Great video guys. Only took me two years to get to it! One other cameo worth mentioning is Roger Corman's (a major figure in cinema) appearance as the FBI director. Apologies if someone else has already highlighted this!
About the night-vision goggles: Many of them have an infra-red light which is invisible to the naked eye, but gives the goggles something to work on in total darkness. On NVG's with an IR illuminator, you could see a shadow like that.
So which scene do people find more terrifying, the escape scene or when Clarice is in BB's basement? Both are brilliantly done, but the thought of Lector on the lose in a huge building gets me going.
No he blinked just a couple times though and the reason for not blinking is because he studied serial killers and he noticed a lot of them rarely blink so he put that trait into the character so yeah
Not Blinking makes others uncomfortable, I'm a master at it myself, and only blink ever so often, back when I was in school I used it to disturb my schoolmates. It's a very easy skill to learn. It will irritate your eyes if you're not used to it. And if you smile just ever so slightly while doing it, will make others really really uncomfortable. Highly recommend learning it, just stare at the point on your face that joins the nose and the forehead, that will automatically keep your eyes open, and is a good way to train keeping them open as you literally can not blink while you do it. However the actual trick is to get used to it and then just stare at other people...
Some night vision goggles can see a shadow like that. Some types use Infrared LED's to enhance close quarters "light" as the night vision goggles can see infrared light.
Number 7's not a mistake. I just finished reading the book last week, and Buffalo Bill was holding an infrared light, which Clarice couldn't see, but he could with his goggles. The shadow was from the infrared light.
It does not matter. Even if Buffalo Bill were using S.I.T (Silicone Intensified Target) camera which can be used in near total darkness the small amount of light, below human threshold, still casts a shadow. I have used plenty of these types of cameras in the R.O.V Industry and repaired and adjusted these cameras plenty of times. The glow from a watch dial is enough light to illuminate an entire room. These cameras are extremely sensitive and that is what is used in military grade night vision as the military does not want even Infrared Radiation being used to to illuminate. That kind of advertises someone is using night vision. I.R detectors are cheap.
Melissa Jansen i've read Red Dragon & SotL 2x each, Hannibal & HRISING once. What is the pg number where in SotL where Harris writes all this about shadows?
Night vision goggles project infrared light. You can't see it with the naked eye, but the goggles can pick it up. They do this so that things nearby will be brighter, appearing lit up while looking through the goggles. So, the shadow is probably due to this. I wouldn't be surprised if the camera was fitted with a NVG attachment. If you look at Clarice's eyes, her pupils are dilated as if she is actually in the dark.
How the maker of the video would suppose one person can see without any source of light? That's nonsense for me. The scene, of course, is full of shadows... I can't figure out how one person would see regardless any play of shadow and light.
+Herman Munster Human eyesight does not include the infra-red spectrum, which is why it is used for IR devices. If you have a remote control that has to be pointed at the device you are controlling then it is using IR, which means you will not see a beam emitted because humans cannot see that wavelength of light. Many NVG/NOD sets use light amplification (aka starlight) to function in low light conditions. When there is not enough ambient light to function well then IR lights are used which work in conjunction with the light amplification. If you are somehow able to see the red light emitted by an IR emitter/light then you have an X-Men level mutation and should be working as a clandestine operative for a three letter government agency.
Thoddius I don't know the difference but my security cameras use IR at night and if you look directly into the camera, you can see the red lights. They aren't very bright but bright enough to easy notice them the closer you get. No idea if that is the same as night vision goggles or not however. I figured it was since their range is very similar.
This movie which even though it was a psychological thriller - I went during the afternoon to the movies. It scared me so much as I left the theatre that I started to look all around me to get to the parking place. I loved the book but the movie was more than I expected and was so SCARY especially when Clarice was being watched by "Buffalo Bill" that made jumped as it did so many people. An excellent well-made movie that had great performances by all actors including Hopkins and Foster.
It was filmed in the Pittsburgh, Pa., area. A few local actors appeared in this and Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. The FBI agent during the forensic pathology scene and the creepy leery inmate who Clarice first sees were both actors who shared the small screen with Fred Rogers on his show.
Actually night vision can generate shadows in the image. If the scene intended was 100% dark a passive NVG couldn't work, an active NVG uses an infra red emiter to light an area, and this "IR ilumination" CAN cast shadows like any other combination of light and sensor to pick up the light, even with softer shadows as you increase the distance of the light source. So, the shadow isn't a fail.
#7 For anyone who knows about night vision devices, knows that many have an IR projection setting. It's like a flashlight that can only be seen by certain types of night vision devices. And such a setting actually does cast shadows. The shadows are where the IR light DOESN'T hit. What the lens captures is the reflection of the IR bouncing back into the lens.
I can’t believe you left out two more legends on the list! Two cast members from Mister Roger’s Neighborhood were in the movie: Chef Brockett is in the cell next to Miggs, and Chuck Aber is one of the guys at the funeral home helping with the autopsy.
When Clarice is hunting down Buffalo Bill in the dark, the music in the background (not soundtrack, but playing in the house) is Hip Priest by the Fall (British band from Manchester). It seems unlikely that he'd be a Fall fan, but it suits the tense amosphere with the soft kick drum and taps on the cymbals.
Correction about the point around 5:00 ...If they were in 100% total darkness the night vision wouldn't do any good. Night vision devices (the type with photo-multiplier tubes)work by amplifying the available light. With 3rd gen night vision devices, a small amount of ambient light can look like a flashlight. It takes very little to cast a shadow. Many night vision devices even have an IR LED that the wearer can turn on in total darkness. They are usually configured in a way so that you can turn them off because they would give away a soldier's position to an enemy wearing NVGs. Second, there's almost always some light that gets into a room. This can be from around a curtain, from a digital clock, etc. It doesn't take much to cast a shadow in NVGs. Source: I have 2 PVS-14s that I use for feral hog hunting.
So many underrated actors in this movie, Frankie Faison, Anthony Heald, Scott Glenn, CharlesNapier, Tracey Walter, and my favorite, Captain Stottlemeyer aka Ted Levine
Fact #1; Orion, the production company that funded the movie, wanted Jodie Foster... Demme originally didn't want her, but they came to an agreement because Demme wanted Anthony Hopkins, but Orion wanted someone well known to play Hannibal...
Isnt that great art though adversity and thank god pfeiffer and connery passed anyway i think. But i recall demme still wanting pfeiffer so maybe she changed her mind .
+Cinefix actually, night vision sets can come with small infra red lights so that you can see in total darkness. With that light on, the wearer would be able to see the shadow you labeled as a mistake.
One of my favorite cameos was left out!! In the scene taking place at the mortuary, one of the film’s producers Kenny Utt (who won best picture at the oscars for this movie) makes a quick appearance when the victim’s body is first uncovered. He’s wearing a suit. Kind of like the cameos in Marvel whenever they throw in Stan Lee!
Its hard to envision anyone but Hopkins and Foster in this movie but just keeping it real, Sean Connery and Michelle Phifer are extraordinary actors and may have done just as well.
1:45 I always thought Robert Plant was the inspiration for this look. Also, if participating in today's drinking game; take a shot every time a comment below corrects the night vision goggle/shadow observation - be sure to call a taxi.
this is one of the best thriller movies ever. It stand besides Psycho, The Exorcist, Taxi Driver. It is epic. And yes, it has a lot to do with Anthony Hopkins playing the leading role.
Today I rewatched Silence of the Lamb and Hannibal and thoroughly enjoyed them again. I was too wrapped up in watching the movies so I was unaware of the things I “probably didn’t know” about Silence of the Lamb. That’s ok with me.
Aw come on... no mention that Chef Don Brockett from Mr Roger's Neighborhood played the nice prisoner, credited as Friendly Psychopath, in the basement cell next to Lector? Don was a Pittsburgh Legend.
Cool stuff, thanks for the info. I'm guessing most actors are dicks unless being paid? If not, do you think that held him back at all in his career or this is just de rigeur for the biz?
Held him back? No way. He was Chef Fuckin Brockett! The only thing that held Don back was bad genetics; he had really bad legs & hips & needed a cane & crutches for most of his life. Note: Don was proped up against the prison bars in Silence Of The Lambs. He had a role in almost every major motion picture filmed in Pittsburgh, till he died in '95 or '96 of a heart attack - the onset of which was triggered by a heated argument Don had with his production partner regarding whether to launder or dry clean a batch of costumes.
Also Anthony Hopkins best Oscar was at the time, maybe still, winner with some of the fewest minutes on screen. It’s amazing he’s not actually on camera much if you time it but is the first thing you think of aside from Jodie foster. Credit to the incredible acting
I love Sean Connery, he was the absolute best James Bond of all time. But seriously, can you imagine him as Hannibal Lecter?? Not that he would've done a bad job necessarily, but there's no way the character would've become as memorable or iconic. I don't think anyone but Hopkins could've given a performance that so perfectly balances grace and charm with menace and terror.
In regards to the night vision: There will NOT be that heavy of a shadow in near darkness (they only amplify light, so in total darkness you still wouldn't see anything). However, if it has an infrared light on it (which a lot do) it will cast a shadow just like the one seen but, being IR, it can only be seen by the goggles. So, is it a mistake? There's not enough information here, but it's a pretty picky mistake if you count it.
If DiCaprio wins it'll be another "Sorry we should've already given you an Oscar, but here.." Oscar, he had way better performances. So I hope he doesn't. Plus the meme must live on!
If you genuinely love movies as an art form, which I assume you do if you’re watching a RUclips channel like Cinefix, then I recommend you just watch more movies. I’m saying this in the most polite way I can. You don’t watch enough movies if you genuinely believe the things you’re saying. Great movies are out there. Look for them, instead of assuming that everything is the crap you see advertised on RUclips videos.
Literally everything Paul Thomas Anderson has made, as well as David Fincher. Tons of stuff that companies like A24 have put out, like The Lighthouse or Under the Skin. Movies from the indie scene like some of the stuff Charlie Kaufman has worked on, or Spike Jonze. Tons of great foreign language films, like Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite or Xavier Dolan’s Mommy. Look at the works by directors like Michael Haneke, or even some of the modern stuff by Scorsese like The Irishman or The Wolf of Wall Street. It’s downright ridiculous to say that there aren’t still countless great movies being made, and if you genuinely want to see great movies, then watch them. Instead of bitching about the false ideology that they don’t exist.
I think Jame Gumb was based on more than 3 killers his method of dumping bodies in water was based on Gary Ridgeway know as the Green River Killer. Ridgeway was still at large when Silence Of The Lambs was written and made.
+Star Blaster When RUclips sends its people, it's not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. And some, I assume, are good people. #LetsMakeRUclipsGreatAgain
The most amazing fact about this film is that Jodie Fosters and Anthony Hopkins scenes were filmed separately - they never actually met each other at all during filming!
Not entirely true, she said she never SPOKE to him, to be precise, but they were in the same stage. You can also find an interview (in the Graham Norton Show) where she herself said that even though they never physically came in contact (because the scene in the prison there was a glass panel between them, for example) they still were on the same set. She said that she avoided him because she was pretty intimidated by him. ruclips.net/video/fXUsRIcwtSo/видео.html

You actually forgot to talk about the house used for the final sequence. The story behind it, how it was picked and what happened to it afterwards is actually a great story. Check it out.
"Good evening clareesh, Shomething about Fava beans..." HAHAHA
😂😂😂
His gun can cast a shadow in total darkness....because total darkness is very bright. There's all sorts of invisible light moving through space at any given time, the source just has to be at the right frequency and angle to cast a shadow that night vision goggles (which use infrared) will pick up.
Actually in order to use night vision goggles you need an infrared light. So it would make sense for there to be a shadow
Things you (probably) didn't know about Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Word
Word? World? Word. Lol
Must be a sequel we haven't heard yet lol
Joe V, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Word is the unofficial sequel made by The Asylum.
It follows Scott after Ramona disappears, he starts looking for her until he realises that she is not lost, he is.
Anyways Scott does some Word related stuff. The End.
yesss
+Richard At The Movies I think you give The Asylum too much credit. They wouldn't of come up with a plot as awesome and consistent as that.
We tend to forget Ted Levine’s performance as Buffalo Bill. With his deep voice and physical looks he deserved recognition. Remember him as the captain on tvs Monk.
It still freaks me out when they take the cocoon out of the throat of Miss Elk River and the air trapped in her lungs comes out! 😵
Wow!!!
Oh Cinefix, you silly goofs. Night vision *does* cast shadows. That's not a mistake, it's a feature!
I have to wonder what the hell this person was thinking when typing this comment (referring to OP). It makes no sense. It's *not even wrong*.
Are they saying that Thomas Harris (the author of SotL) based Buffalo Bill on 3 serial murderers? I'm sure they don't mean Demme...
Not true night vision works from star light (ling) if its out side the night vision works well if its pitch black night vision wont work.
it hasnt cast shadows when ive used it
Perhaps everyone doesn't know that Ted Levine (Buffalo Bill), is also Captain Leland Stottlemeyer in Monk.
Freaked me out when the guy who'd fuck himself was solving crimes.. Great show though
what?! I didn't know that
"Bang. Bang. Bang, bang, bang."
From 'Heat'.
also the cop in fast and furious that is paul walker's superior 😂😂
Robert J. Williamson - and the chief in American Gangster
number 7 is completely wrong it was pitch black in the basement so the nvg's wouldn't work without the ir beam coming from the goggles...so it would cast a shadow
THANK YOU, I scrolled way too far for this
@Danny Stowers well yeah obviously otherwise the camera couldn't have picked up anything... the shot is for suspense purposes.. the room itself, in the movie, IS pitch black otherwise Clarice would've seen him
If it's pitch black, at least with the night vision that I've used, you need an IR illuminator.
Ew, women can have whatever hairstyle and clothing THEY like mr.man
Nobody asked you, sir. 🙄
Worry about your own presentation.
@@culleno872what's protected? Infrared light It is
It rubs the lotion on its skin.
#NiceShirt
Cue the greens keepers song, lotion
Did Benjamin Raspail get a take on this? (aka Miss Moffet) pmsl (the crew members molded face that was used for his dead head).
This scene scared me.
Imagine seeing Joe Dirt first, then Silence of the Lambs later. As was the case with me.
HERE'S SOME THING ELSE...YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T KNOW!! SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS...DID NOT BLINK IN THE ENTIRE MOVIE.
No he blinked just a couple times though and the reason for not blinking is because he studied serial killers and he noticed a lot of them rarely blink so he put that trait into the character so yeah
To look like a reptile.
Pretty sure it was an exaggerated comment to make it more comical, but thanks for the extra fact anyway. :)
No Vegans Or Vegetarians Allowed : gotcha! 1:27
Thanks for the post, I was about to write this but was little lazy typing all these technicalities. I'm glad I scrolled down.
Melissa Jansen
i've read Red Dragon & SotL 2x each, Hannibal & HRISING once. What is the pg number where in SotL where Harris writes all this about shadows?
NVGs can cast a shadow with IR light. The light is invisible to the naked eye but can be used as a "flashlight" for NVGs.
The last, ultimate fact hit you way too hard for the Oscars. Thank you, Jame Gumb.
I've seen this movie at least five times and it scared me every time.
Just realised every "Things you (probably) didn't know about..." is just a video version of IMDB Trivia of movies.
If you look directly at an IR light, its red. She would had seen it. It was just light amplification, not IR goggles.
I still think about "Psycho"(1960) sometimes when I take a shower. 60 years ago!
+Vilmar Antônio Moccelin Júnior Wow, I wish I read this before I commented cuz I pretty much said the exact same stuff lol
"Good evening, Clarice! Something about fava beans." Hahaha! :D
3:12 he’s incredible! And those few.
When Clarice is hunting down Buffalo Bill in the dark, the music in the background (not soundtrack, but playing in the house) is Hip Priest by the Fall (British band from Manchester). It seems unlikely that he'd be a Fall fan, but it suits the tense amosphere with the soft kick drum and taps on the cymbals.
a lot of night vision googles use IR illuminators for total darkness, which would cast a shadow
No movie as good as 'Silence of the Lambs' this year.
+Sam Smith
Or the past ten years, really.
Silence of The Lambs is underwhelming and overrated
95% of movies arent as good as Lambs
Ilannguaq Jonathansen Hahaha shut up
Ilannguaq Jonathansen and we care why ? Fuck off the video then lol
All I know about the Oscars is that I have as many as Leo DiCaprio.
Hey, me too! I feel so special now.
Film News Report lol no u dont
Replying in 2018 KAPPA!
3:33 And i thought that was Stallone.
One of my favourite all time films... I am going to have to watch it again now
Watched this for the first time last night and was blown away. Definitely a movie that lives up to its reputation.
3:20 - that guy played a character on Seinfeld. That's who kept sneaking up on Elaine so she gave him box of TicTacs as a cowbell.
Lol!
+Cinefix actually, night vision sets can come with small infra red lights so that you can see in total darkness. With that light on, the wearer would be able to see the shadow you labeled as a mistake.
That's what I was going to say, glad I'm not the only one who knew this
+Jan Fetzer but then that whole scene would be a mistake since she cant see him
Walter White
?
Infra red light is invisible to the naked eye. He would see the shadow with the NV goggles, she would see nothing.
Oh yeah duuh.my bad :)
:-)
You forgot to mention Roger Corman in the list of people who made cameos in the film that were kind of a big deal.
Best movie ever ! It’s magic how this all came together . Cool facts ty .
The guy "about to do the raid on the house" looks like Weird Al Yankovic.
Gene Siskel hated this movie, so you know it's great.
Gene Siskel pretty much hated anything!
And not a *single* fuck was given that day!
I'm loving this channel more and more by each video.....
Its hard to envision anyone but Hopkins and Foster in this movie but just keeping it real, Sean Connery and Michelle Phifer are extraordinary actors and may have done just as well.
Please to a "What's the difference", for this movie!
Well, not sure how I ended up here but I’ve never seen this and it’s on Netflix rn so I think I’ll go watch✌🏾
No shit?! The multiple Miggs guy or wtv his name??? I'm replying 5 months later, I know...
There are two cast members from Mister Rogers: Chuck Aber was in the movie, too!
I felt old enough when you said the film was 25 years old. Then I felt even older when I realized this video came out 2 years ago.
The video came out 4 years ago. Sorry!
Napier to me is: "It's hard to eat corn on the cob with no fucking teeth!!
Finding out that they didnt film the creepy lights out scene pitch black makes me appreciate Jodie foster as an actress.
I could be wrong, but isn't the name pronounced "Ed Geen"
Barney Os. And I think its "Jamie Gum" not Jame like lame
+John Rivett it's Jame like name (there's a whole story about it in the book)
+John Rivett no I'm talking about Ed gein
+Barney Os. It's also "Antony Hopkins". The H in "Anthony" is silent.
+THGhost2013 both H silent if youve been knighted! lol
Well this is all it took to make me want to watch again. What a masterpiece.
This was awesome!! Great job narrating!
If DiCaprio wins it'll be another "Sorry we should've already given you an Oscar, but here.." Oscar, he had way better performances. So I hope he doesn't. Plus the meme must live on!
Do things you didn't know about Jaws! PLEASE!!!
Hi
Back when they could still make interesting movies.
Truth
Strongly disagree. In my opinion the 2010s might be the strongest year for film. And the 2000s are up there aswell.
Watched it today for the first time in awhile, still easily one of the greatest.
I think Jame Gumb was based on more than 3 killers his method of dumping bodies in water was based on Gary Ridgeway know as the Green River Killer. Ridgeway was still at large when Silence Of The Lambs was written and made.

Dude! Watch it!
Jim Heeren lol its not on Netflix hope u found It some where tho ☺
Jim Heeren Did you watch it and if so, what did you think?
Jim Heeren a great movie. We need more of these done.

Just rewatched the movie and it never stops too entertain
It's a good thing Hopkins did this movie because he's perfect for it. I don't think anybody could have done it more fittingly.
will you do a Whats the Diff on Silence of the Lambs??
Night vision goggles and cameras project infrared light, the infrared casts a shadow, so yeah.... you got that wrong. Seems lots of others picked up on that, guess we are the jerks who like correcting movie mistake mistakes.
Ed gein is actually the main inspiration for him he had a pit to in his basement
5:08 thinking she would. Use night vision cameras. And there likely still is enough.
Hands down one of my top five favorite movies of all time. #2, immediatley following Reservoir Dogs
