  • Iron Cap Mountain rises majestically above the High Alpine Route linking beautiful Necklace Valley with dozens of stunning lakes within the Copper River basin. This is a diverse and breathtaking loop within the beautiful Cascade Mountains. This journey takes you through a mix of alpine meadows, pristine lakes, dense forests, and rocky mountain terrain. When hiking in this area, it's important to be well-prepared with proper gear, including maps, navigation tools, and provisions, as this is remote wilderness. Additionally, please always follow Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the natural beauty of the Cascade Mountains. This is a fantastic destination for those seeking solitude, pristine wilderness, and challenging routes.

Cascades are the best summer hiking I have seen anywhere.

Again, you two were so sure-footed on your ascent to Iron Cap Mountain. I would have fallen to my death. You’re amazing! Loved the pica and the american dipper. The lakes were lovely. My favorite lake on your journey was Big Heart Lake. Thanks for taking me along!

I always wanted to know what was beyond Angeline Lake, and above the necklace valley cabin. Very cool reliving these hikes again. Great photography skills. Way better than the pocket digital cameras i had back then.

Hi! Thank you so much for your video, it was gorgeous! My friends and I are planning to do this trail later this year. Do you have a track of the route you took? And do you know if there's a way to avoid the ridge and maybe cut down early in the boulder field before Iron Cap? I believe that's the sketchy section I keep hearing about.

      Thank you Melissa!
If you're not aiming to summit Iron Cap Mountain itself, I'd suggest staying at a lower elevation and skirting around the Iron Cap Lake basin. Scrambling to the top of Iron Cap requires great route-finding and scrambling skills, as there are a few stretches that could be potentially dangerous. If you choose this route, you'll need to descend all the way back to the valley floor and then ascend again to reach Tank Lakes. Opting for the route around Iron Cap Mountain will still entail navigating mostly by hopping from boulder to boulder, with occasional cairns guiding the way, but you'll avoid significant elevation gain and loss.
All trails offers a GPS track that shows the route around Iron Cap Mountain shorturl.at/gnyU0
      Happy trails!
