Big Snow to Iron Cap Traverse

Alpine Lakes high country traverse from Big Snow Mountain to Iron Cap. Route inspired by Kyle McCrohan. We spread this route over two days, camping one night at Chetwoot. Rather than drop down Iron Cap to Tank Lakes, we opted to backtrack and drop down from the ridge to Crawford Lakes and then down to the Dutch Miller Gap. The miles across boulders and never ending fields of talus are slow! 17 miles in 17 hours! Route : / strava .

Did you bike to the Hardscrabble trailhead? Maybe you talked someone into a ride. I always enjoy your videos -- they capture enough clips to show what the route is like. I just did that west ridge of Iron Cap, traversing over from Tank Lakes. We dropped down to Crawford too, but camped at the lake and found a nice route down the ridge. We were tired of talus!

I think the Iron Cap ridge is some of the best scramble route I’ve been on, such a beautiful aesthetic route with trees and rocks. We would have gone off the backside of Iron Cap but we wanted a shorter route. We never did find a trail down from Crawford but LOTS of talus!
