Civil war - Back to Iwo Jima (English Lyrics)

- The name Iwo Jima means "Sulphur Island", it is an apt name. While most images of pacific islands are idyllic, peaceful, sunny and beautiful, Iwo Jima is a blackened slab of rock no more than 6km across, with a giant extinct volcano Mt. Suribachi. Throughout this volcano was dug a huge network of tunnels and fortifications, turning the mountain into a giant rabbit warren. It was often considered the place best fortified by man and by nature. When American forces landed on the Island mid 1945, there was no Saving Private Ryan style machine gun fire and shelling meeting the marines as they came shore, only an ear piercing silence. When the Americans began to set up camp on the beach, the order was given to open fire. Mt. Suribachi lit up like a deadly Christmas tree, machine guns firing from every direction, shells exploding around the marines as they made camp. One marine was quoted to have asked his superior "Hey sergeant, is this a bad battle." To which the sergeant replied "IT'S A FUCKING SLAUGHTER." The sergeant was blown to pieces by a mortar half a minute later.
The Japanese were outnumbered at least 5-1 with no chance of victory, but they held out for three days inflicting heavy casualties among the American forces before finally being defeated.

The thing I always found interesting about this song is that it’s written from the perspective of a Japanese soldier as compared to most historical songs which usually focus on the allied perspective.
One of the things that's made this my favourite song from the album.
You probably already have but if you haven't one of my favorite ww2 movies is Letters from Iwo Jima which takes this battle from the Japanese perspective.
@@AmericanMilitaryHistory I’ve seen a criminally low amount of war movies. Will definitely check it out.
@@TheTeletrap there is also the flags of our fathers which is the same movie from the American perspective. I believe they are directed by Clint Eastwood
@@AmericanMilitaryHistory Whelp, checked it out. It was absolutely fantastic. Displaying the varying ideologies of the soldiers, showing the rivalry between the Navy and Army, and so much more. The movie does a good job of displaying that war isn’t black and white, even against an enemy as fanatical as Imperial Japan. Going to Watch FOOF next.
I didn't listen to this song much before, but I only now realized that the soldier isn't actually physically returning to Iwo Jima. He has PTSD and "returns" to Iwo Jima in his flashbacks, which makes the song so much more meaningful. At least that's what I understand.
For being a branch off from the amazing "Sabaton" this band us criminally underrated.
One correction I wish to make to what it says in the description. The Japanese soldiers defending Iwo Jima numbering at around 21,000 who faced 110,000 American marines and other military personnel actually held the island for 36 days straight. The landings started on the 19th of February, 1945 after a 3 day bombardment of the island. The island was finally declared secured on the 26th of March, 1945. The famous picture of the flag raising on Iwo Jima was taken on the top of Mount Suribachi on the 23rd of February, after the American marines from the 28th Infantry regiment of the 5th Marine Division (part of the V Amphibious Corps) finally fought to the summit of the mountain. I'm still shaky on the details, but I believe that out of the 3 airfields located on the island, Airfield No.1 was the one of the first landmarks captured by the Americans alongside Mount Suribachi.
Oh, also Duke of Txtspeak I really like these Civil War lyrics videos. It's a great band alongside Sabaton. Keep it up man.
If Foundation personal says so

Ahh my favorite music genre of music, educational medal
We do such horrible things to each other.
They attacked first
Cliffs of Gallipoli but WWII
uhh, little inaccurate
General Kuribayashi was a 5 star infantry General , Imperial Japanese troops fought to their death . Another thing is Gallipoli was successfully defended by Ottoman Empire while Iwo Jima was lost by Imperial Japanese
@@atharvakulkarni3189 yes I know but it just kinda reminds me of it
hey man have you ever thought of adding a discord server to your channel
It's unthinkable how Japanese put effort into their own death...
A true soldier rather die before he surrender
Now imagine these guys and sabaton doing a concert together
