Thank you for leading me to discover Allen Holdsworth. I cannot believe I played guitar almost my whole life and never heard of the guy he is absolutely amazing. I'm soaking everything up I can find of his
You’ve really helped me understand the technical side of my instrument and I’m really thankful. Awesome online teacher, and probably an amazing irl teacher as well
Damn nice outcome of such appreciation for guru Holdsworth. My favorite of his work with others was with Pierre Moerlen's Gong on the album "Gazeuse!" (aka "Expresso" in USA), specifically the solo on "Expresso". A story I'd heard about him was that he was not only one of the most phenomenal guitarists ever, but he'd actually been a bit of a latecomer, hadn't been playing long enough to explain how anybody could play with such absolute unity with his instrument. May be rumor but not a bad one. Nice stumble-upon video here, man. thanks for the inspiration.
The City Nights intro lick is played as a string skipping legato lick if I recall correctly, this makes the lick way easier to play than the impossible way that you're playing it Marshall :D. Keep up the amazing work!
Holdsworth sweeps occasionally as You can see in his REH video. But I really don’t care how he played the lick honestly. I’m just trying to play the notes on the page the most musical way possible. I truly feel my way is easier because the arps repeat in octaves in one section which makes it way simpler from a memorization point of view. Thanks Camgrow.
You would be the best guitar teacher ever. Amazing taste in music, inventive, incredible playing ability. Thank you for posting these online lessons. Truly wish I had the cash to pay you to teach me in person!! Lol
First of all RIP the great Allan Holdsworth.......then, secondly you are amazing, you have always given me a Shawn Lane kind of vide but brought right up to date. I have seen loads of your vids, I love all the stuff you did with Troy Grady. Only an innovator could get away with naming Swybrid as another technique for the guitar, but Mr Harrison, you certainly can get away with it. I love your playing and I get it. I also own a Vigier and they are beautiful guitars. Keep it up sir...very inspiring...Peace
Genius!!!! Could u kindly advise on how you do equal volumes of reverse hammer ons (equivalent to that of a pull off of the conventional legato) ??? Im struggling to get good volume of reverse hammer ons!!!.... do u use too much force on fret get that volume? How do we go about it?? Technique wise
@@Swybryd-Nation thank you for your response.... one last question... playing at lower metronome speed is much much harder, so the practice should be done at slower speed or at faster pace( i mean,im able to play reverse hammers fast cleanly and and at a decent volume) so what should be the approach for metronome practice? Looking forward to hear!!
This guy knows his stuff alright. For me, I'd prefer to have a head cam (1st person) view at what he's doing. About twice the guitar volume in the mix would also enhance the whole thing.
Check out Marshall's interview(ruclips.net/video/imrHGD6f6V0/видео.html) where he talks about his influences, his musical background, and demonstrates how to do Swybryd picking!
For the city nights intro, didn’t Allan use three notes per string with string skipping? With regard to technique, it’s really slick playing it like that if your interested in the resultant phrasing qualities. Cheers marshall
Thank you very much I just subscribed a year ago or something to you why do you great guitarist not tell on what chords he is playing those things...that would be even more productive in my playing...????I am a Jazz musicion you know...
Want to learn how to play like Holdsworth? You need large hands.... Not too large but pretty large.... And most importantly practice.... Hours and hours of intense practice!
He didnt have huge hands. The evidence is Marhsall Harrison, he can play any holdsworth tune and we can see that Marshall doesnt have very huge hands like Paul Gilbert (very large hands) or Steve Vai.
Does anyone give a good advise on how you do equal volumes of reverse hammer ons (equivalent to that of a pull off) ??? Im struggling to get good volume of reverse hammer ons!!!.... do u use too much force on fret get that volume? How do we go about it??
Hi Marshall You are a big proponent of doing all hammers instead of a mix with pull-offs. It is really trick to do this. Do you have any tip (besides obviously doing descending scales) ? Cheers
@marshallharrison Saher Galt has a channel on YT he says that reading rhythm is the hardest part of reading music, he has training videos to help overcome the challenges of reading music.
Could you also give the chord progression I understand the theory,(I could of course figure it out but his chords are mostly not Jazz oriented but Holdworthian like ad9 etc maybe maj7 You are yourself very modest and a Great Player yourself! Thank you for your great lessons...I hear you gave it sometimes already
To me, Sand is a great introduction album as long as you don't mind a lot of synth. It eases you into some of his chord voicings and note choices. It's not too alien, but it's still Holdsworth.
Road Games was AH's first real breakthrough into his true "unmatched monster-nous-once-in-100yr-visitation" kinda thing - (Tokyo Dream and Three Sheets are very "accessable" tunes). Also - Heavy Metal Fatigue - (Devil Take the Hindmost is one of the few tunes that has a melody that sticks in your head for days - but a solo that is among his best ever). Marshall might actually agree with my assessment;-)
None Too Soon (Remastered) is a pretty awesome album too. Some of the songs have a traditional jazz feel, but with Allan shredding up a storm. open.spotify.com/album/1YamtRids5pZUMV2jbcXNl?si=BHvH_ITTSwOlf4sw_kdg9g
Sure possibly but I hear a “raking” sort of pick sound. Sweeping sounds more authentic. With Holdsworth his ideas are so notoriously difficult that you should play them with whatever technique you’ve got down the best.
Do you know Eef Albers any way? winner of best guitarist of the World 1973, played in Brain box but his later work fusion is much more interesting all is albums recommend but it seems that birds of the Night is one of the best, there are lots of video''s of his life playing on you tube
That is not hard.... Try it. I learned the first twenty bars of The Drums Were Yellow before.... I never practice my guitar seriously. Granted those bars are the easiest but still at least try to play his music without thinking it can never be done.
Try it.... You never know what you can do until you try it out. Allan Holdsworth once said about Eric Johnson's playing.... There are things he does I could never touch myself! I cannot believe he said this! Allan could easily play his music.

Thanks for this Marshall. I shared this on the Unreal Allan Holdsworth page on Facebook, I hope you don't mind.
Thanks Mashall; as usual it is a great pleasure to watch you play and teach; inspiring and generous!
Mad Respect Marshall, You Are The Coolest And Most Wicked Guitar player. God bless you and your family Marshall.
you are a one of a kind genius mr Harrison- thanks for pointing these out !

Your videos get better with each passing one. This was a great lesson. Let's get lesson #4 done! Thank you and Happy New Year!
Great, Marshall!
Cheers from another Holdsworthian-"school" student …
Thank you Marshall.
Everyone should book a lesson with him! Great stuff.. pure gold, Marshall. ***Nice haircut... I WISH I had such options! ;-)****

love your AH vid´s. Thank´s a lot sir.
Love your vida man and your tone is life
Geesh you are a Freek of nature that is just amazing 👏
Thanks Marshal ❤️ really appreciate your expertise!!

Waiting for part 4!
I’ve been implementing this technique with the Hot for Teacher intro. It sound different in a very cool way.
Greatness here ❤

I agree with this. IMO, the fingering of the City Nights intro becomes very logical if approached like this and is much more intuitive to play.
very good, Sir !
Time for pt.4 Marshall!
I covered all the AH licks that floored me. Maybe I’ll do one on Eric Johnson. Who would you like to see?
Thanks for posting this. What guitar model is that?
Vigier Shawn Lane Model Excalibur Custom
Thank you Sir! Thanks for all your great postings.
Hey Marshall, thanks for another excellent teaching video...the guitar is super quiet, but I am guessing that's how you wanted it : ) Take care, Oen
thank you master
Can it be done with a regular guitar, is there anything we need to consider like guitar's strings size or guitar calibration?
Use any regular guitar six string with kind of low action with no buzzing
Great lesson and haircut :)

Hello Master Marshall...
I cannot find you on Facebook.
Greetings from Switzerland !
Okay I am sorry you gave some chord insinuations though Thanx! I would be intersted if he played theAB DG(Gad9)-C#ad 9 over a dominant D7#11?
Jesus how did you get so good.. man, make a quick video on all the little things you used to drill or practice to get where you are today!!!!

Remember, Tony Williams who gave his first break played a yellow drum set...?
Hi Marshall, thanks for the Video. Which picks do you use?
how does that FLAT fretboard feel like?
I'm used to 16'' or even 17'' radius guitars...
Like a classical guitar fretboard. You won't notice too much of a difference from 20 upwards to flat.
Very nice. tnx
Hi Marshall
You are a big proponent of doing all hammers instead of a mix with pull-offs. It is really trick to do this. Do you have any tip (besides obviously doing descending scales) ? Cheers
Allan used different fingerings than everyone. You're doing his stuff with different fingerings than everyone elso too. Pretty cool !

Hey what guitar were u using in the beginning of these Holdsworth legato videos??(part one) The videos comments were disabled
What pick gauge you use?
Thank god for youtube speed control. Marshall's slow is still too fast for me. Plus the volume level. Oh well, lot's of goodies here none the less.
I dont know H at all. Which albums do you recommend by him that i start to listen to? Thanks.
Get Sixteen Men of Tain, Secrets, Heavy Machinery.

Hi Marshall, the intro of "City Nights" sounds to me like it's a string skipping lick (in the studio version), it could be?
Sure possibly but I hear a “raking” sort of pick sound. Sweeping sounds more authentic. With Holdsworth his ideas are so notoriously difficult that you should play them with whatever technique you’ve got down the best.
I absolutely agree
Sounds great Marshall, except the volume on the guitar needs to be louder. Your voice is nice clear.
there should be 950k subs not 9.5! great lesson and incredible playing
Beato does some great work and can really play. I’ve been too lazy...if someone could help with some good editing I could do a lot better sub wise.

Imagine disliking this video...
Worthy tribute to the great man. Probably have to normalise your definition of 'pretty easy' @ 0:45 for us mortals...

Try it.
I learned the first twenty bars of The Drums Were Yellow before....
I never practice my guitar seriously.

@@MrPyroguru Yes, of course Allan could play anything from EJ. Allan simply presented as very humble and gracious, a gentleman.
Great stuff,,but on a few of the videos I've watched,,the guitar volume is way too low.
Whats that noise at 26.53 ?
endrizo that sounds like a fart but it wasn’t me, mine are much much louder.
🎶🎵🎼🎸🤘
@MarshallHarrison Are you familiar with Ted Greene?
Yes and have I actually contributed to his estate.
super cool licks
Hey Marshall, check out Yoshinori Seki playing along with City Nights on youtube
Legato haircut.
Nice haircut
That was a nice cut 5 years ago. Thank you.
Wow..
U sound similar to Shawn lane 😎👍
Sir, please please please turn up your amp until it's at least the volume of your voice.
PLEASE.
It's so hard for me to hear your guitar, it's so low.
Maybe someone peed on them... real mature.. LMAO!!!
I don't think I'll ever listen to that great song the same way.
The drums were yellow. Maybe somebody peed on them :D
Beautiful!
your voice is a lot louder than your guitar sound
Oooh...damned...haircut...
I love your playing but your videos are terrible. They are never loud enough. Please do something about that. Thanks, Don
I dont realy like the fast fusion stuff. I like metal more.
Can you buy something so we can actually hear your shit?
Unless this is from the 80'S and i totally apologize.
Ask for a refund.
