Wonderful fresh people. Overall one of the best kitchens in the world. People who feed youngsters are divine helpers who contribute to the mental, sociological, emotional and mental development of children. I hope foundation and charities in our country UK and European Union can do something great like this.
The only difference is the labour cost. India has a lower labour cost and I would imagine if you were wanting to do this is the more developed countries, the labour cost would be significantly higher. Everything is done within the cost brackets, in an ideal world you statement would be correct, but we live in a dystopian world 😂
@@orrgazmo Nah, it is not the labour cost but the upfront cost of the machine. USA for example would never invest to the good of children without being profitable. Most of the work are done by machines, there are only about 20 workers in each factory. The benefit of feeding 2 million far outweights the labour cost of 20 people.
Fun fact Akshaya Patra literally means vessel which never gets reduced or defected. According to legends, Akshaya Patra was such a vessel which never gets empty of food, no matter how much food is taken from it. A limitless supply of food.
When you think about the scale on which they work....the sheer number of students they feed....the demography they serve.... the area they cover...... the logistics they manage on a daily basis.... It's just mind blowing!
It’s amazing, isn’t it?! It’s such a different model than having kitchens in each school. The population is so concentrated, it allows for a totally different approach. Many workers in India have tiffens delivered daily to their shop or office, made out of huge central kitchens like this, and then delivered by bike. He said six trucks deliver to 650 schools. I live in Vancouver BC, as concentrated as it gets in Canada. Try driving one truck to 100 schools in a day. 🤣🤣🤣 No way, no how. Let alone between say 10 am and 1pm. And to say nothing of 75,000 students- that’s over 1000 students per school. Elementary schools here are around 300-400 kids each… impressive.
@@funveeable You’re so far off base. Ironically, the man who runs this made it very clear that he pays a living wage, and isn’t making any profit on it. The reason it works is because of population density, a unified diet (no fussy parents demanding sushi for lunch, everyone eats the same things), and the fact that he isn’t doing it for profit.
I absolutely love this story. Why is it, my country, the USA, can't have a program like this for our most important asset, our children! The compassion, care and attention to detail combined with the gratitude the kids were showing. It warms my heart that someone in the self-centered world of today stopped & listened to what was needed for the children and then actually did something about it. Kudos to all of you!
I’m in high school in California. California recently became the first state to provide free food for every kid across the state meaning we don’t have PIN numbers anymore and we just use our school id
I'm a mom with 2 kids in elementary school in north Texas. Our state provides free school breakfast, and lunch from elementary to middle school. Once in high-school it's not free anymore. :/ But that's not the real problem. The real problem is that north America's public school lunch program is absolutely awful. We have frozen everything. Barley any nutritional value, crap. And you don't even get a lot! Our schools need a healthy REAL home cooked meal for our students going to public schools! It helps out so many kids here in the United States too that also face food insecurities. When I was growing up I relied on school lunch and breakfast to eat bc me and my mom lived in her car bc she was an alcoholic. Life was hard and unfortunately at that time there wasn't a free lunch program. There were days where my friends in school would sneak me food or share their lunch with me. If that program were to have been available at that time, I wouldn't have had so many sleepless nights bc my stomach would cramp from hunger. United States needs to revise the school lunch programs. Use the taxes to make lunch free for all students and serve nutritious non frozen meals every day!
@@karareeves1280 I know that some school systems do provide free meals to the children however I completely agree, what they are feeding them is rubbish. So they spend the $ to just fill their tummies with no thought to nutrition. Our kids need nutritious meals as they are still growing, including their brains. And then everyone wonders why there is such an uptick in learning disabilities, ADHD and all the other issues that are plaguing the kids of today. I am happy you survived a really tough childhood & thank goodness for your friends! ❤️
All that food and they can't give the kids a freakin fork or spoon? It must be so dirty and unsanitary the way they eat it with their hands, no napkins either, yuck!

Never in my life have I been more appreciative of the people that served me food when I was in school. Never knew how they did it, but I assumed something like this
When I was going to elementary school in the early to mid 80's in Florida, I genuinely loved and ate everything the cafeteria lunch ladies put on my tray! Was mostly cooked on-site and as fresh as they could muster. They loved seeing me come down the line as they knew I enjoyed and appreciated everything they made! Yes, even the veggies! For parent's spaghetti dinner night (which was once or twice a year at the school), my mom and grandmother would go with me to have a dinner provided by the school. I distinctly remember hearing the lunch ladies tell my mom that of all the kids that they served, I was the only one that loved their food and would eat everything! They were always so sweet to me, and every once in a while, would even give me a little extra desert! I always appreciated them!
What hasn't been mentioned in this video is that this is run by the ISKCON. Indian temples have had this tradition of providing meals after prayer services. The idea came into existence to extend this concept beyond the temple premises to schools. I hope others take notice to this and implement similar programs to feed children. Not only has this program helped fight malnutrition, but also school drop-out rates.
Children in schools, especially public schools in India, being able to eat a hearty meal makes a prominent impact on their lives and their families since most parents can't afford to feed them each such full and healthy meals! Though this should be something provided by the Government through public funds and it's failing in many areas, Akshaya Patra is for sure making a big help to the country!
@@jtd9426 no, it’s not healthy, it’s rotting flesh that doesn’t digest so well in the human body. It’s about what the body can digest, that’s all that matters. Karma is real.
This is not an easy feat. To be able to feed a lot of children with healthy cooked food is also not a thing that one usually wants to do for charity. Food are very costly, especially in large batches such as what he and his staffs are.doing. Bless them for feeding the children.
Well it’s vegetable biryani, so there’s no meat, which makes it a lot cheaper. Also, the fact that is done in large batches makes the per serve cost a lot cheaper.

The idea originally germinated from a much loved legendary South Indian politician after independence named "Kamaraj". He remembered his days when he went hungry and said to provide food to public schools will stop school dropouts and parents didn't have to pay for one day meal. After the massive success in coming decades it spread elsewhere and some good nameless Samaritans went to Supreme Court and demanded it made a federal policy. SC favoured the verdict in 2001. Ever since Indian public schools provide food. The difference here is that private organisation is involved in feeding the children after collecting the money from the Govt. The quality is hard to sustain with just the govt funds hence good people like you donate the extra funds through online means. The name 'Akshaya Patra' is borrowed from the legendary plate in Hindu culture that never goes empty from food. @justtrynalive still though America has the ability to grow a large portion of food, it's just that much of it is animal feed for pork and other meats, and even if the soil is less fertile, they have the money for fertilizers
This is Amazing. I come from a very Privileged background few years back I volunteered at a Municipal school in Mumbai. The children received a free meal every Saturday - Usually Dal Rice. The kids used to be so happy to get the hot hot food. The teachers encouraged them to take it home too. Something we take for granted can mean alot for these children. If i had not experienced the kids joy I'd have not connected with this video as much as I have. Thank you to the foundation you bring smiles to many many children everyday. May God provide you with everything you require to continue your service :)
A really important fact about these free meals is how they encourage education. Like maybe your parents are not interested in getting you educated but they might send you to school if you get atleast two meals a day (there are a lot of govt run schemes that give breakfast also)
It's actually a very convincing tactic to promote education. In the past education was for the privileged, while in poor family they need every hand they could get to help with their livelihood, so education was considered unimportant (don't have time to think about the future if you're struggling with the present). That was the reason why public education didn't succeed in the beginning. Then they introduced free meal to entice the poor so they would be willing to sent their childrens to school. After all, one less mouth to feed could meant a lot for poor family.
It was Shri KAMARAJ who was the CM of Tamil Nadu, who introduced mid day meal scheme at schools to encourage children to attend school He was not educated in any school. Later Shri MGR CM of Tamilnadu extended this scheme to all schools IndraGandhi as PM ,supported this scheme and provided extra budget to TN for this scheme . Both did not attend any school. Its now adopted throught all schools in India . Indian philosophy says that one can get 100% satisfaction after consuming a meal and would say...I can't eat more than this
India is spending a lot on large midday meal program but quality was compromised so now government funding to ngo and other institutions and running their government programs on side
This is an incredible endeavour that shows how much they all care about the children & their needs. Not many places would be so committed to what they are doing & not take such care to make a nutritious meal that kids genuinely enjoy. Eating a daily meal of healthy food is so critical for a child's future success & these people are making a great contribution to the future of these children.

This is amazing 🥹😭I go to school in America and the amount of times I’ve gotten expired milk or stale food(and it’s expensive) it’s nice to see that students in other countries are actually cared about
in the U.S. they have this, but sometimes the food they feed us has mold, or they forgot to add milk to the bread or just somehow effed up making pasta. A lot of kids don't eat the lunch and instead starve themselves instead until they go home at 4. They would rather be hungry then eat, which sucks because the school is supposed to give us breakfast that isn't any better, i.e. warm yogurt, break made without milk/water etc
I know it's not as bad as you say, but It's the same case in India too. But the difference here is allowing private participation and Govt outsourcing it. Govt provides them the funds and they take care of the food. However for the quality that they make here is not enough with funds from the Govt so private donors also contribute. One thing not mentioned here is that the private organisation that's taking care of this is a religious organization (and left Govts hate the idea that it has association with a religious institution and hence they don't allow to serve food in many states like mine. They deny school children from my state from getting this kind of quality) That being said they have association with school ONLY for food and NOTHING else). This scheme was partly founded and ideated by the current UK PM's in laws company founders. Nothing can beat simple hot food, I grew up in Tibetan refuge school (supported by Indian Central Govt) India, simple rice and dhal were served (a dish you will never get sick of it) for lunch. I only wish Indian schools started this program earlier like Tibetan Refugee school did under the guidance of His Holiness Dalai Lama. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I think technically it did, by India's mid day meal program. But it was government funded through schools themselves and they mostly cook them fresh in the schools themselves with very limited staffs from the limited funding and ingredients sourced from the locality. So the quality of what the kids get was varied across states based on the how much the state and center funded and the availability and cost of ingredients in each location.
7:56: …meal we give to the children is hot, nutritious, safe, tasty… Very true! The children are fed meals that have very high standards. I am wondering if some don’t like the food at home anymore after having this. Looks like the children bring their own plates from the home. Everything about this is exceptionally impressive - the vegetable serving consideration for children, hygiene, the setup, and delivery logistics. Cherry on the top is no plastic waste. The world needs to take note.
The plates are offered from school. It's lower income groups that send children to public schools in India and atleast till few decades back parents who couldn't afford children a meal would send them to school just for a days meal. This was Godsend back then when it started. Most of these children would have the only meal in the day from school. 😢 Things have changed now in 2020s. Majority can afford meals two times a day now even after having this from school. But still many can't. There were also instances that other religious motivated people have tried to sully the organisation over the years by mixing adulteration intentionally at the point of delivery by people within schools and make children sick. An independent audit proved that no other school where the same food was offered had any issues except one. So it was proved that it was done by mischievous people out to harm the initiative.
The reason it's vegetable is because the organisation that provides the food is a Hindu religious organization. As per certain customs in Hinduism/Jainism onions and garlic is not good for health. Hence both these items are avoided in the meals they serve for children. There used to be a controversy by leftists that they weren't offering meat/eggs which they said they won't due to religious nature of not harming animals for food. However milk is an important part of our culture in India hence milk products are being offered by them as food. Since milk is from cows that's the reason why Cows are considered as holy as a mother. Cows are considered holy not Godly as west portrays in MSM. Killing cows is seen equivalent as killing a mother in Indian culture. So even a barren cow (that stops giving milk) are taken care till it's natural death.

What a fantastic organisation Akashay Patra Foundation is in feeding tens of thousands of children a hot nutritious lunch every day. The children seem to be very happy and grateful. In the UK, if children got a free meal similar to this, they would turn their nose up and complain.
I don't think that's true. I remember lunchtimes being hungry and lonely, and I didn't even grow up in an underpriviliged area. I think I'd've been delighted with anything at all, let alone a hot rice dish.
This is absolutely amazing! So efficient and clean. I wished I had meals like this when I was going to school. It was a rough time. I know all too well the difference a hot meal makes when you’re trying to learn. Kudos to this organization. I hope they continue to grow and reach more people.
I see lot of negative comments from foreign nationals (may be or Indian nationals without having any Idea?) without understanding the food culture of South India. I have been in the schools where this food is served. They have 18 different menu items. Yes, all of it has some form of rice dish. That is the culture of South India. In North India, they do serve Chapathis and Rotis. The city Bangalore, where this was filmed, is in the state called Karnataka and has the highest number of vegetarians in South India. Many of North Indian states have large number of vegetarians. Hence in order to accommodate everyone, they serve vegetarian food. You can bring your own, if you can afford and eat meat every day. Like many of the western children prefer sandwiches, in India, kids and adults eat rice dishes. Rice is a staple dish in Asia. We used to wait for our lunch. We are NOT very rich to afford extravagant dishes. These contain lentils for protein, rice for carbohydrate, vegetables for nutrients and veggie protein. What is not to like. Each state govt. has stipulated nutrient that should be in the food. That is what he was talking about when he said, 50 grams for lower primary and 75 grams for upper primary. They are working on a budget feeding thousands who otherwise would not get proper meal.
I’m from Australia here but I don’t understand why people would be so negative The balance of fresh foods plus a good staple carb like rice for energy (as we know kids certainly need a lot of energy 😅) seems like a fantastic meal during school Well done to all the people involved, it’s awe inspiring to be honest

@@karenneill9109 more like 60 trucks though, I think there's a mistake there.
The workers are paid a few dollars a day. It's easy when you don't have an overbearing government that imposes minimum wage and pointless regulations.
@@funveeable You’re so far off base. Ironically, the man who runs this made it very clear that he pays a living wage, and isn’t making any profit on it. I absolutely love this story. Why is it, my country, the USA, can't have a program like this for our most important asset, our children!
But that's not the real problem.

The quality is hard to sustain with just the govt funds hence good people like you donate the extra funds through online means.
Indian philosophy says that one can get 100% satisfaction after consuming a meal and would say...I can't eat more than this
It's not the case now. It's just about giving meals to kids. Not to promote education. Maybe it was the case decades ago not now
Wow. Super impressive and very kind. Well done India! I hope one day this practice is adopted by all countries.
It shall be; Big Daddy feed us good...
This is service to the nation! Thank you ISKCON and the Akshay Patra Foundation for what you do to give every child an opportunity to build a bright and healthy future for themselves in service to our motherland.
I remember going to Akshaya Patra in Guwahati as part of a school trip many years back. To watch and understand the process by which the food was cooked in such large quantities was extremely fascinating to me. And the use of innovative yet simple machinery for different parts of the process left us all amazed. The best part was when the entire class sat down together for a meal. It was so delicious and I still remember the taste of kheer that was served to us for dessert. One of the tastiest kheer I ever had!

I wish we could do this here in Michigan, I worked as cafeteria lead in our school system and was ashamed. We need more fresh food our little ones.
I’m in Michigan right now and was just thinking that!! Even better to work with local farmers and employ locally, creating jobs for the whole community while feeding it too

We need to implement programs like this in cities around the United States. The biggest complaint from students is that the food isn't good. After seeing several videos like this from cities around the world, I see how this can easily be done to provide a variety of nutritious, satisfying meals to children at school. This video is a fine example of what can be done for a large amount of students.

Akshaya Patra is the legendary food plate in ancient Hindu story that never goes empty with food.
Americans dont know how to cook. It is bulk, industrialized, dangerous food. Should know how to cook cheap, healthy, warm, vegetarian meals daily from scratch, without packaged foods, 3 times a day, as it is done in India. Every housewife does this everyday.

Bless these children and people. They eat what is given to them and are very thankful. My nephew wont even eat rice or vegetables as he thinks its gross. May these children bring hope to the future and the world.
Puree the veggies and add them to pancake batter or other foods, make fritters of veggies. My cousin suffers from vitamin deficiency because he refuses to eat veggies. The only veggie he eats is potato
Why is that? Maybe just change the way you cook it. Veggies can be in the form of anything you like, and some veggies don't have a strong flavor by itself, so it can be seasoned to taste like anything.. I love rice and veggies, but if you just give me plain rice and boiled veggies I would hate it too
Most of these children come from families with food insecurity. They are grateful for any food they get because they can't afford to be picky. Akshayapatra was founded to help these children get balanced nutritious meals and prevent so they won't be tempted to eat cheap meals with zero nutrition.
Perhaps your nephew needs to be exposed to variety and also told about children who don't get to afford the food he gets. Gentle exposure helped my daughter become less of a picky eater
It will have lot of spices and seasoning to taste better.
Mahi mahi nope. The food akshay pathra makes is very tasty. And their menu changes daily. So kids arent bored with menu and have tasty meals. Also indian spices add good flavour to rice and veggies.
That's how I imagine the future will be:

Most kids don't need free lunch, simple as when they can make it at home. That's exactly why we don't implement it.
@@RoachChaddjr Kids are required to go to school, that should include a free, healthy, hot lunch.
Brad they dont need in india too. Still govt provides for all be rich kid, middle class kid, or poor kid who cant affrd. So govt sed to all dont get tiffin and govt sponsors their lunch. All kids rich middle class poor sit and eat same lunch promoting equality here
@@FindingGreenOS you're also required to bring your own pens to school, you can make a sandwich too. Stop shelving the responsibility of your own child
@@pratikislove2893 Equality is equal access to education which I am for. We are two different countries, India may need conformity but the UK does not. The UK needs free lunches to the children who can't afford the time or money for lunch, this is not the circumstance for all kids. Caring for a child is an important milestone for most all abled parents and the liability shouldn't be shelved by the state taking care of your kids.
This foundation also provides food for other subsidised food schemes by government too. In my state they supply lunch for poor at ₹5 although it costs them ₹20. The difference is paid by govt and donations. The food is definitely good because some well off people don’t mind lining up for their food instead of going to the restaurants😄. There isn’t a lot of variety on the menu but the food is warm, healthy and delicious. All their meals are completely vegetarian, but I think it’s okay for people here.
The thing is whether the food is vegetarian or not, it should be well nourished which it is, that's whats matter
AkshayPatra is operated by ISKCON which is a Vaishnava Hindu Org.
So the food will be vegetarian only moreover the benefit of providing vegetarian meals is that everyone can have it
Nothing can beat simple hot food, I grew up in Tibetan refuge school (supported by Indian Central Govt) India, simple rice and dhal were served (a dish you will never get sick of it) for lunch.
7:56: …meal we give to the children is hot, nutritious, safe, tasty…
Very true!
Things have changed now in 2020s.

This is not a company. Akshayapatra is a wing of the ISKON commonly kniwn as the Krishna Consciousness group, a dhaarmik community. It runs no business ventures and exists and subsists entirely on voluntary donations.
Actually, if we put together the statistics on which country of this world gives out free and good quality food day after day FREE to the maximum number of hungry folk, without calculation of religion, gender, community etc., and without any expectation of fame, power, ideological conversion etc., and all this funded by voluntary donations of small and big money from unknown, silent donors, from the beggar to the business tycoon, we will find that India that is Bharath leads every other country, even the richest, by many, many, many laps. The cause, inspiration for this is the pbilosophy of Hindu Dharma ( Sanaathana Dharma ) that includes the SadDharmas, Jaina, Bauddha, Sikha, and all the indigenous Dharmas arising from this Land of Bharath.

I’m from Australia here but I don’t understand why people would be so negative
