I'm a vision rehabilitation therapist doing research on how my clients can create accessible homes, and you're videos are so helpful! I love your idea of adding PenFriend decals inside your cabinets! Thanks for making these!

Excellent video. I’m extremely low vision with a degenerative eye disease and still love to cook. Beautiful kitchen and invaluable tips on how to shop for and adapt appliances.

Do you happen to have a link for those clear location dots? I have a couple of dots on my microwave right now but they’re big and bulky and I’m pretty sure I’ve heard others in the household say they can’t see the number under the dot! Love the video! I am looking into new appliances right now for a potential kitchen remodel so this was great! 😺

Clear location dots. Outstanding! Beverly, I love your kitchen! Amazing information! Well done. Get some ice for Jerry's face from the camera hitting his face. Lol hahaha.
    Blessings!

Hi Paul, yes, clear location dots are a must in my house. I’ve put them on a lot of things just to remind me where the on and off buttons are and other reminders that I need on a constant basis. And I thought the video would spiral out of control after I hit the camera that hit Jerry in the face and he almost ruined the whole thing with his laughter. I don’t do much editing so laughing and dog barking and phone ringing and doorbell ringing we’ll all be included if they occur while I am videoing. It’s my crazy life around here but I can’t help but have fun. Hope you guys are doing well and having fun, too. Thanks for connecting. Love Beverly, Jerry and Gretchen

Girl you are way ahead of me. Way ahead. Goodness. My house is 20 years old. Funny, I never use my dishwasher. Ever, so I am sure it is broken. I don't like filling a machine of dirty dishes when they just sit there, so I wash them. I am pretty simple. We don't have an ice machine. I don't even use a remote for a TV. I watch RUclips.😂
Great seeing you. You look so wonderful. Stay well Beverly, my friend. Lovely space.

Hi Jannell, you always say some of the most funny things. A dishwasher that you don’t use. Well I would rip that thing out of there and replace the space with more cabinets. You can’t have too many cabinets! Now living in Florida, how can you Live without an ice maker? I guess it could be done but around here, Gretchen consumes most of the ice that is dispensed. Yes, Gretchen must, must have ice in her fresh water in her bowl at all times. Lol. Thanks for your comments and connecting and hope you all are doing well. Hugs and wags! Love, Beverly, Jerry the videographer and Gretchen

Beautiful kitchen! I love your appliances, gives me great tips and ideas for when we redo ours down the road. Thanks!!

Thanks David, I think this kitchen has stood the test of time. Because it’s pretty traditional, the Windows window treatments, lighting and cabinets may last a lifetime. I did see a post in social media somewhere, saying that there are some appliances that speak and if , Or I should say when, we replace the appliances, I will definitely investigate that technology. Wishing a rapid weak for you and I’ll be in touch soon! Love, Beverly

Thanks Beverly. This was a really clearly explained and helpful video. I have been caught out putting a bumpdot on a static button and then it wouldn't work any longer! I love the idea of the penfriend label. There are loads of possibilities for that system. I'm glad I came across your channel, I will have a look at your other content. Happy New Year to you and Jerry

Great video! I actually got some ideas from this one. I have a pen friend and hadn’t thought about labeling that way, thanks much. Also, I was looking for your thoughts on the new GE induction range; apparently it’s the only induction range that still has knobs to control the cooktop, all the other good ranges are slider controls, which I think as you point out our static now. also looking at the new Breville smart oven, which is supposed to be controlled by Alexa, my past experiences with Alexa controlled devices hasn’t been great. I have a microwave that quit working on me after six months. Great content, keep up the great work!

Hi Beverley! This is a really cool informative video! Yours and Jerry’s remodeled kitchen looks really nice and modern! I really like how all the appliances in your kitchen is accessible to your needs. But also for everyone else to use. It shows people that accessibility can be achieved when you know what your needs/accommodations are. At my Transition Program for people with disabilities, I’ve talked to my teachers about putting braille and large print on all of the appliances inside of our kitchen. I’ve brailed and added large print on quite a few of them already. Since we have other transition students that are not Blind/Visually Impaired that have been in the space a little bit longer than we have. Because we just moved into it at the beginning of this school year, August 2021.
I also have very exciting news for you Beverly, I just went to Guiding Eyes For The Blind back in January to receive my first guide dog! I now have a Male Yellow Labrador that’s two years old, going to be three in March, named Zeke! He’s done nothing but changed my life in a big way and for my family! Zeke and I have been back home in Illinois from training for two weeks now. I was in guide dog training January 17th-29 2022. He’s really acclimated with my new environments I’ve taught him and got very comfortable fast. Both flights were amazing experiences, I was actually very excited to travel all by myself once those two weeks started. I would do it all again! All of the Guide Dog Mobility Instructors, my new friends (or other classmates), and kitchen staff been very welcoming and friendly! Guiding Eyes really involved all of my family and everything which is a blessing!

Yay❣️...and we heard Jerry too! 😄 I kind of had to do some of my clues for my toaster over like you did with your Pen Friend, except I just made little index card braille cheat sheets, and I had recorded myself telling the order around the rotisserie button. I put some clear dymo tape pieces. Thankfully those are Presser buttons. Now I can sometimes with patience use the Seeing AI app. Sometimes it works sometimes I have to take separate pictures with my phone and then share them with the Seeing AI app, and then it can recognize an LED occasionally if will. My mileage varies with that app depending on its last update. Ironically the most tedious thing is resetting my oven clock, when the power has been off awhile.
    I love your kitchen! 💖
I think my up to date computer must have static touch. It drives me nuts losing focus with Narrator instantly. I finally got a new router and was able to set it up. Next I think a separate, ergonomic split full keyboard would do wonders. That laptop is portable but the keyboard slows me down, with that track pad right under the space bar, and that separate function key that always has to be used like a pass through key. I can't stay in the edit box for avoiding that weirdness. I thankful to have an up to date and portable computer. Just need to get some more gear to fly along as fast using it as my old ones.
Was that lyric, "No static at all!" from Steely Dan? That's what I need. Smiley!
    Good to hear you Beverly❣️

Hi Audrey, wow! Not only are you highly intelligent but you are technologically savvy as well. It’s fantastic that you have an updated computer but even more impressive, you are aware of components that may make it even more functional. And I love your braille index cards. Just the opposite of technological but highly effective nevertheless. Setting the oven clock is Jerry‘s job because I spent One entire afternoon on that task, several years ago and I told him I would never attempt it again. Lol. I so appreciate your connecting and love to read your comments so keep them coming! Stay safe. Love, Beverly

Great video! I love the way you described the difference between touch screen types. I make and sell tactile icon labels and it is so frustrating when customers buy an appliance and then realize the buttons are not activated by pressure. As you have found, local sales people do not know the difference but I've had great luck with the manufacturer's customer service representatives over the phone. The technical terms may be helpful to you and your listeners - a pressure based surface is called resistive. Resistive is what you want for tactile labeling. A touch based surface that responds to a simple finger swipe is called capacitive. Capacitive - bad.
The tactile icon labels I sell are shaped stickers, like your loc dots but the shape identifies the button function. For example, start is a right pointing triangle shape and stop/cancel is an X shape. There are shapes for buttons on ovens, microwaves, dishwashers and washers - all sorts of things. I think the most popular microwave button is the popcorn tactile icon. It is shaped like a popped kernel! Thanks again for the videos. tangibleSurfaceResearch.com/halos
