Another idea to help you with not running into your coffee table is if you put the rug down and you notice OK I’m approaching it. Just kind of take a step with 1 foot and move it back-and-forth and make sure you’re not gonna run into the coffee table and then put that foot downin front of you and then take another step do the same sweeping motion with that foot until you find the coffee table and then you can more easily go around it by trailing it with either the side of your leg or with your hand or

Just a side note, in general, I can imagine driverless cars are SOO helpful for sd handlers like myself with access issues and everything, but almost a necessity for a blind person or guide dog user! Only thing is driverless cars kinda scare me, there has been accidents, hopefully they have improved and fixed this issue 👍

So they have these machines where I live but the staff doesn’t know how to set them up so they’re totally useless. The one time I did vote they actually made me do it in the middle of the line with somebody writing down the answers. I have no idea what was actually written down or what was down in my name . And it’s been that way for years. I thought to get the machines in, but nobody knew how to set them up. They’re totally useless.. I am so sick of dealing with unacceptable appliances. I’m having to get a new washer and dryer nothings accessible. I was recently in the hospital supposed to go to rehab. They refused to take me yeah, I dog I sent them the laws they still refused to take me. I told them they were violating a federal law, and I got laght it by the staff.. I’m just totally sick of it. Now I’m trying to figure out who the hell to call because I don’t want this play. Wait what they did to me. I’m disgusted by it all.

Great video! I love the way you described the difference between touch screen types. I make and sell tactile icon labels and it is so frustrating when customers buy an appliance and then realize the buttons are not activated by pressure. As you have found, local sales people do not know the difference but I've had great luck with the manufacturer's customer service representatives over the phone. The technical terms may be helpful to you and your listeners - a pressure based surface is called resistive. Resistive is what you want for tactile labeling. A touch based surface that responds to a simple finger swipe is called capacitive. Capacitive - bad. The tactile icon labels I sell are shaped stickers, like your loc dots but the shape identifies the button function. For example, start is a right pointing triangle shape and stop/cancel is an X shape. There are shapes for buttons on ovens, microwaves, dishwashers and washers - all sorts of things. I think the most popular microwave button is the popcorn tactile icon. It is shaped like a popped kernel! Thanks again for the videos. tangibleSurfaceResearch.com/halos

Great video! I actually got some ideas from this one. I have a pen friend and hadn’t thought about labeling that way, thanks much. Also, I was looking for your thoughts on the new GE induction range; apparently it’s the only induction range that still has knobs to control the cooktop, all the other good ranges are slider controls, which I think as you point out our static now. also looking at the new Breville smart oven, which is supposed to be controlled by Alexa, my past experiences with Alexa controlled devices hasn’t been great. I have a microwave that quit working on me after six months. Great content, keep up the great work!

I think of you often and miss you. I like this description of the mushroom drain cover. That sounds like the ideal item I would like for all my drains. Smiley. It has been so hot here. I hope you and Jerry are well. I am just rotating laundry as usual and need to cook something after hanging up what's rinsing now. Need to wrestle a clean sheet on the bed. My friend found some cute comfy house dress sun dresses for me a couple days ago. I love that they don't drag the floor and have a cute feeling handkerchief type hem. Plus pockets! Plus nice V neck. Light enough to throw over a lampshade. So when I knock back on the front door I can fast swoop one of these on. She thinks that with a bra, we could wear these anywhere. They are solid colors, one purple, one pink, one black.

Hello. Is that harness made of wood? We recently had an article in the paper about a bind man who was fed up with being patted down coming through the airport because the metal detector would always go off when he and his dog would pass through. He said it made him feel like a criminal and wanted to take legal action. I said on the post that the harness should be made of other materials and no metal. That they should notify the manufacturers of the dilemma that the metal creates. What are your thoughts on this subject? Have you had any experience at airports?

    • @Violets-and-Roses
      @Violets-and-Roses 2 года назад

Handles are made out of either metal or stiffer fabrics or materials. Wood would be far too heavy and rigid, and could injure the dog or damage joints over time. How stiff your handle is/material is up to personal preference and dog preferences (some dogs don’t like the pressure very rigid handles have).

N Even though I am a guide dog user, I love your cat face emoji. I am a feline at heart and I took art lessons including charcoal‘s, pastels and oil paints, as a youth when I had better vision. You might appreciate, coming from an artistic viewpoint, the black granted countertops have a striation of green which is enhanced at certain times of the day when the sun is projecting directly onto the countertop. And, in selecting my white cabinetry, to tone it down from an explicit, optic white, I had the paint company mix my white paint with 1/64 ratio of primary green. The optic white cabinets are now half white but subliminally or perhaps, with exceptional color vision, one can detect a slight hue which blends with the backsplash, drywall and striations in the black granite countertops. I know it is a lot to comprehend but this is the way my mines I sees it and it is just as rewarding and enjoyable as seeing it with natural vision. Thank you so much for commenting and sharing and supporting this content. Love, Beverly

I like a farmhouse sink! If I end up building a place that is the sink style I want. I almost have that in this place, but it's not as deep as I would like. Still, I can, wash a California King size sheet in in it. (Note: I'm not holding my breath, but the manager said they are going to have two washers and dryers with accessible pay points again in the laundry room supposedly by today! She told me this two days ago. It's been since 2016, they were all rendered inaccessible and made into internet dependent card sliders with no audible information and LED screens which iphones generally can't see either.) (She said she requested more of the retrofit coin slots but the people she asked claimed they could only find two sets of the old hardware. It's the same washers & dryers from when they took the the coin hardware out.) I hope they haven't stuck us with the couple of same dud machines that were always down or didn't dry things before. Location access to the machines is also important for me to be able to roll mobility gear to with the wash and cleaning supplies on it. We shall see how it goes. apparently sighted people without the specific credit cards those inaccessible internet slider slots demand, also haven't been using the washers and dryers. Besides all that, I like your faucet situation even better! I always am dealing with that constantly trying to not cross contaminate things as well without lots of counter space. On another access note: I have a few heavy duty forest green, upholstered bar stools that I use to perch on in front of my sinks, in both the kitchen and the bathroom. I also use another one to help me get dressed. It helps me with sliding on pants, socks and shoes. They spin but not real loosely. It's great to prop each knee up on horizontally to get the socks on, and then just hold onto for balance while getting the shoes on, or climbing in and out of the tub as a part of the three point stability method of climbing, and drying off. Plus sometimes when I'm cleaning the floors, I will just lean over them on my belly to reach areas I want to dust mop by hand. Bracing myself with another hand on the rim of the tub or another one of the bar stools. I kind of repurpose paper towels I have only dried my hands on, to sweep up my hair with after I've combed out the tangles. It's kind of a daily order of things that just keeps the full on mopping easier when it comes to that. I am relieved to not have wall to wall carpet anymore. I used to have to take the vacuum apart and put it back together every time I vacuumed to keep the pinch roller functional. I've made a crafters mesh cylinder for my tub drain, which catches whatever my combing session didn't get. Furniture walking and body surfing across the bar stools helps me reach a lot of areas. I'm flexible enough to just lean over and touch the floor with my hands but I'm a little "shwooshier" and several of my joints slide out easier than they used to, while the muscles are a lit tighter, plus I tend to rock a little more than I used to in a kind of twisty way. It waxes and wanes. The important part of this equation is for me to avoid breaking a hip when any of several other joints slide off the track. It's not I would just have to drag myself to a car and could then drive through a bunch of drive throughs. I have to still be able to tend to things with my Fred Flintstone like vehicle. Which I'm happy to do, however long it takes. 😅 I've been clearing the kitchen corridor (my kitchen is a tight galley) because there is also a chance my new dishwasher that I only tried twice in 2018, may get it's exhaust fan hooked up, and my sink disposal may also be fixed from since the lightening storm knocking it out last year shortly after the freeze out and power and water outages were over. It seems like they must be getting a maintenance crew sent in from corporate because all this was initiated by management when I had to renew the lease, without me bringing it up first. Maybe HUD contacted them, since I applied for a voucher with their latest upping of rent and extra insurance demands having something to do with last year's ERCOT disaster. Crossing my fingers, 🍀. I think the oven drawer will probably need pulled out so that there will be leg and foot room for whomever is going to get under the sink. I've already cleaned out the cabinet and put out a pallet of braille magazines for whomever will need to probably recline into it, except for leaving a bucket under all the pipes to catch any debris. I should probably check the bucket and disinfect it again, while nothing is potentially dripping. Love hearing from you Beverly❣️

The barstools are in genius and it sounds like you are quite physically fit to be able to do all of the things you do around the house. It also seems that, if we could harness your intelligence for adaptations, we could create appliances, kitchens and work spaces for users with specific sensory and physical needs. I love hearing about how you adapt the environment to ensure success. I wish you more success, health and joy! Stay safe, love, Beverly

Hi Beverley! This is a really cool informative video! Yours and Jerry’s remodeled kitchen looks really nice and modern! I really like how all the appliances in your kitchen is accessible to your needs. But also for everyone else to use. It shows people that accessibility can be achieved when you know what your needs/accommodations are. At my Transition Program for people with disabilities, I’ve talked to my teachers about putting braille and large print on all of the appliances inside of our kitchen. I’ve brailed and added large print on quite a few of them already. Since we have other transition students that are not Blind/Visually Impaired that have been in the space a little bit longer than we have. Because we just moved into it at the beginning of this school year, August 2021. I also have very exciting news for you Beverly, I just went to Guiding Eyes For The Blind back in January to receive my first guide dog! I now have a Male Yellow Labrador that’s two years old, going to be three in March, named Zeke! He’s done nothing but changed my life in a big way and for my family! Zeke and I have been back home in Illinois from training for two weeks now. I was in guide dog training January 17th-29 2022. He’s really acclimated with my new environments I’ve taught him and got very comfortable fast. Both flights were amazing experiences, I was actually very excited to travel all by myself once those two weeks started. I would do it all again! All of the Guide Dog Mobility Instructors, my new friends (or other classmates), and kitchen staff been very welcoming and friendly! Guiding Eyes really involved all of my family and everything which is a blessing!

Yay❣️...and we heard Jerry too! 😄 I kind of had to do some of my clues for my toaster over like you did with your Pen Friend, except I just made little index card braille cheat sheets, and I had recorded myself telling the order around the rotisserie button. I put some clear dymo tape pieces. Thankfully those are Presser buttons. Now I can sometimes with patience use the Seeing AI app. Sometimes it works sometimes I have to take separate pictures with my phone and then share them with the Seeing AI app, and then it can recognize an LED occasionally if will. My mileage varies with that app depending on its last update. Ironically the most tedious thing is resetting my oven clock, when the power has been off awhile. I love your kitchen! 💖 I think my up to date computer must have static touch. It drives me nuts losing focus with Narrator instantly. I finally got a new router and was able to set it up. Next I think a separate, ergonomic split full keyboard would do wonders. That laptop is portable but the keyboard slows me down, with that track pad right under the space bar, and that separate function key that always has to be used like a pass through key. I can't stay in the edit box for avoiding that weirdness. I thankful to have an up to date and portable computer. Just need to get some more gear to fly along as fast using it as my old ones. Was that lyric, "No static at all!" from Steely Dan? That's what I need. Smiley! Good to hear you Beverly❣️

It’s fantastic that you have an updated computer but even more impressive, you are aware of components that may make it even more functional. And I love your braille index cards. Just the opposite of technological but highly effective nevertheless. Setting the oven clock is Jerry‘s job because I spent One entire afternoon on that task, several years ago and I told him I would never attempt it again. Lol. I so appreciate your connecting and love to read your comments so keep them coming! Stay safe. Love, Beverly

Hi Paul, yes, clear location dots are a must in my house. I’ve put them on a lot of things just to remind me where the on and off buttons are and other reminders that I need on a constant basis. And I thought the video would spiral out of control after I hit the camera that hit Jerry in the face and he almost ruined the whole thing with his laughter. I don’t do much editing so laughing and dog barking and phone ringing and doorbell ringing we’ll all be included if they occur while I am videoing. Hi Beverly! 💖 So good to hear from you. Love your kitchen, and Gretchen alerting you about company! I decided to zap my leftovers from last night, for breakfast. They had turned out pretty good. I did some stew meat like steak tips with real mashed potatoes and one of those quick "minute mushrooms" pouches. I could've zapped the pouch but I just took the meat out of the skillet, and poured the pouch of mushroom and onions into the skillet to heat it up. Was afraid my microwave would splatter that out the vent corner of the bag, like it does with some other more liquid things. The rice pouches microwave great, but other things are more popping. 💥 😄

This is the first video of yours that I have watched. I just want to thank you for sharing this. I just saw you comment on Molly Burkes video where she made "no bake" treats & you mentioned that you are blind & that you are able to cook, so I clicked on your name & saw that you have videos. She (Molly) doesn't really show much on how exactly she is able to do certain things. She usually prepares things prior to recording. So I really enjoyed how informative you were when you were actually showing us how you are able to cook. I'm excited to watch & learn more from you. I am not blind but recently (through RUclips) I have been learning a lot about how different abled people live & it's very interesting and educational.

Hi Shelley, thank you so very much for watching and sharing your comments. Because of you, IA decided to video a little bit more of how A blind person navigates and functions in a kitchen. There are so many different layers in place, necessary to be a functional blind cook so it will take a few videos to cover this topic. Because blindness is just a part of my every day life, it takes a lot of thought for me to separate out, what ordinary cooks do in a kitchen versus what a blind cook does in a kitchen. It is also natural to me but your comment inspired me to break it down into segments that I can hopefully video and convey to viewers like you. Thank you so very much for caring and being open to learning about how differently abled people live their every day life. Take care, love, Beverly

I am working on my O & M skills. I am seriously considering applying for a Guide dog. I December, I went to California for an Orientation and Mobility Immersion Program. It was so wonderful. I had a Juno walk, and a walk with a guide dog named celeste. I am going to spend the next few months improving my skills. Then I will start the application process.

Hello Kimberly, it is so exciting to hear about the immersion program you attended in December. It must have been an opportunity of a lifetime. Mobility training is very challenging but so very worth the effort in my opinion. I feel that I am still a novice as a guide dog handler since Gretchen is my first guide dog. I enjoy watching other more experienced handler’s work with their guide dogs and RUclips helps me connect with other competent blind people. Thanks for reaching out and connecting and keep me posted on your thoughts regarding guide dog applications and pursuits. Good luck and stay safe! Love, Beverly

There's a song called The Tighten Up, smiley. I was thinking about jingle bells in A Chorus Line, but now I'm doing the "tighten up." Happy Christmas y'all 🎄❣️ I'm about to have some of those fresh warm tortillas a friend brought by earlier. Maybe with honey this time. Did quesadillas earlier. They threw in some of that simmered salsa as well. Sometimes I like to put a little roasted pumpkin seed kernels with the honey in my tortilla. I like the soundscape of your walk. Christmas just is happening fast! 🔔

Congratulations on soon to be come a new guy dog handler. It is a very momentous event. I have been a guide dog handler for 22+ years now, and although I don't see myself embracing the guide dog lifestyle much longer, I have worked with some amazing dogs and learned a lot along the way. Good luck to you. Also, the techniques that Beverly described in this video regarding holding the harness and especially the leash are correct for those who are getting a dog from a school such as The Seeing Eye. But another school may have you hold the leash differently, depending on where you go. The leashes at Seeing Eye are 4 feet long, while other leashes from other schools are longer. While IMA Seeing Eye graduate, I personally do not have the leash looped over my wrist. Instead, I have the leash in between my two fingers and resting on the harness handle. In class, you will find what works for you.
