I'm just stuck. Ive got a 2 tone. Black and blue theme for my games workshop necrons. But I'm just stuck and afraid to paint
For years I painted 1/35 scale military minis (vehicles and figures) s well as 1/48 scale aircraft. The last time I assembled and painted a fantasy mini it was made of lead. Your paint guide here is truly useful. Im attempting to apply these lessons to some D&D Orcs. Thanks a-lot for such a useful video.
Enjoyed the video, I find eyes super intimidating and will watch your video. One thing I am struggling with is time per piece. I can see spending a couple of hours on a player's miniature, but can't do that for the dozens of monsters that may only be on the table for 45 minutes a year. I guess I am looking for tips for 5, 10 and 20 minute per mini tips.
As a former teacher, I want to say that your presentation style is highly effective. Previewing, repetition, really showing your technique instead of just telling what you are doing, and most importantly for learners, acknowledging that mistakes and fixing them are part of the process. Add white to cover your mistake, then re-paint with the original color - genius pro tip! Thanks!
Do a "rescue" project, i.e: taking a really poorly painted mini and then attempt to fix it and turn it into pro-level painted. Would be a great challenge for you and great for us to watch! 🎨
Just here to second this request! I have a mini that I started with NO knowledge of what I'm doing, and would love to not have to reprint it.
Make that a third! I’ve got some minis that I need to rescue from Vinnie the Terrible (my title when I first started off). Joking aside, I’m looking to revisit older painted minis and would love to see how you approach this; stripping, reprising etc.

I'm only just beginning after being away from the hobby many years, and never really having developed much advanced skill. Wow... This is an incredibly comprehensive video, and now a valued reference for me.
I appreciate the parts on starting with the eyes, demonstrating edge highlighting vs. dry-brushing, the bit about mixing white in to increase opacity, and the fact that this is just a few of the many lessons provided.
I really appreciate the approach you foster in the viewer. You encourage a learning mindset, and to expect/accept mistakes then work through them. Maybe more importantly, you skillfully and earnestly model this as you openly acknowledge your own trip ups, then either demonstrate creative ways of addressing them and/or acknowledge the lessons they teach and move on with completing the task. This may be the most truly educational content I've seen on this subject. Thank you for creating it.
A green stuff video would be amazing! I have such a hard time using it to smooth out my minis during assembly.
Never seen a better overall guide for mini painting, so many of these tips I've never heard but are super useful!
I'm coming in 2 years later. I used to paint miniatures back in the 80's when all the models were lead/pewter. Trying to get back into it. Thanks for these tips and tricks. Can't understand why some of the hateful comments from others.

I've practiced everything on about 50 models, except highlighting and layering/wet blending...and eyes. This was a great video to fill in those gaps in my knowledge/experience and explained clearly and simply. Saved video in my library for multiple future watches as I need to reference several steps. This is full of great info and would give bundles of great advice to anyone starting out and still has great tips for those who have been doing it a while!
I greatly appreciate how in depth you went with each of your steps. This was exactly the video I was hoping to find. Although I did not agree with a few of the techniques, I still found great advice from many other parts. I will also at least try the things that I didn't agree with to at least have another point of view on my own painting.

Great tip about the consistency of the paint during an edge highlight. One thing that everyone seems to miss is bracing your hands together to keep your brush stable and under control. I think that would make for a good video in itself.

This video along with several others are great! I’ve become a subscriber of your channel due to the plethora of how to’s and painting tutorials. I’ve been painting on and off for just over a year and I’m currently working to improve in shading and highlighting. After watching this video, I feel I’m ready to tackle wet blending, layering, and cross hatching.

Gotta love cats. You're the first mini painter I have watched on RUclips that uses Reaper paints.
90% of the minis I paint currently are either Bolt Action or for 40k. When I was about half my age now in the early 90's I painted Ral Partha and TSR minis for AD&D.
My hands and eyes aren't what they used to be, but I can put a "battle ready" squad on the table in a day. A "character" model in about the same time. Haven't quite picked up the wet pallet technique yet, but it is handy.

Insane detail!
I appreciate you explaining exactly why you want to use a certain technique with your brush. Too often people just say "do it like this," but without that extra explanation on why it works better to hold your brush in a certain way or use a different type of paint, I often don't even remember the tip because it's too abstract.
Also by watching how you paint your distinct style helps me better understand my own style by noticing what techniques I'm doing differently to achieve similarly, yet slightly different, effects.

You taught me how to paint eyes and to wet the bristles before loading paint onto the brush. Those two things took my painting from "meh" to awesome, overnight. Eyes first. It was like an epihany. Today's lesson - black in the shadows before painting colour is another lightbulb moment. Can't wait to try it!

Very useful and interesting overview. I am fascinated by how you hold your brush! Could you do something on that technique you have?
A handy hint for eyes is let the white dry completely, then dip the very tip of a toothpick in black paint and use that to dot the iris. The advantage of this over using a fine-liner is that if you make a mistake, as long as you're quick enough, a brush dipped in airbrush thinner can clean off the black paint without damaging the layer underneath.

I've been using Micron pens on eyes for years and have a tip I learned the hard way. If you're going to use a wash on the face, SEAL THE EYES with a clear varnish. The wash can interact with the ink from the Micron pen and make it run. I had to fix the raccoon eyes on an entire squad of WW2 Brits.

Just started on being serious on painting. There's a lot of prep work you do for that tiny mini. I use cuttlefish colors paints, very good for layering and highlights. My issue is sometimes painting over a finished part. I hate being a perfectionist on stuff like this.

Some good advice here. Ive heard a lot of people recommending W&N series 7. I bought a size 1 and 3 but i find their bristles a bit too soft.
Spray paint lids work for large minnis. You can also use wine corks fot hero or smaller minnis.
Cat chaos is part of my crafting, so it is good to see.
I really like Army Painter paints. I use them 9 out of 10 times. They have loads of pigment and thin well. They just need a good shake. Their coloured glazes / effects are great. Not just soft, medium and strong but their coloured washes are great. I love the green, purple and blue, well worth a go if you haven't tried them before. Their metallics seem to have large-ish particles, they have their uses but they aren't as versatile as some others. I haven't tried their new coloured metallics, I'm curious to see if they are any good. Their mega set is great value for someone new. All the colours you could hope for and more. A great place to start.
Vallejo is good too, I like their metallics in particular. Seriously, their metallics are just great. The particles seem to be finer and their gold and silver are just brighter.
I tend to use their primers, retardant and media a lot too. They all work well and aren't too expensive.
Vallejo are similar to Army painter in price and have a huge range. They are just a bit expensive for new folks and they don't offer a comprehensive starter set like the Army Painter one. So for anyone new, figuring out what to buy may be daunting. There is no right set to get but I know where I would be pointing people to start with. Vallejo's sets just aren't as complete for new folks. Well, that's what I think, just my opinion.
I'm a bit weird with brushes. I like it when the tip curls over. I know, most folks hate that but I like a wee curl on the tip. High end brushes don't really do that so, I don't use them. I like to use the curl to wrap around details or over corners and edges. It kinda hooks around things. I know, it's weird but, that's something I really want. So, I buy relatively cheap brushes and over time, some develop a curl or hook at the tip. The ones that do that I keep as my good brushes. I know, I'm odd but if it works, just go with it.
Get some proper cleaner for your brushes, it will make a seriously big difference to the life of your brushes :) Brush restorer and the cleaner are money well spent.
I have a seriously cheap air brush that I use for priming. I have a compressor with a tank too but when I first got an air brush, it cost £20 with a tiny pump included. It was way, way better than I thought it would be. I'd highly recommend anyone to get a cheap airbrush for priming and zenithal highlighting. Seriously, give it a go, it's like instant talent! Just make sure it's dual action :) It's a good place to start. You can base coat with a cheap airbrush too and the results are immediate and look great. It's incredibly easy to use one and until you learn the basics, you won't need anything more expensive. Once you get the hang of it, then look for something better to suit your needs. But for basics stuff like printing and base coating, you can't go wrong. It's great for terrain too. But having a cheap one teaches you a bit about what you will want and what matters to you. It's as personal as buying brushes. Until you start using one, you won't know what works best for you. Badger, Iwata, Harder and Steenbeck all make superb brushes for instance but they are all different and there are so many variations. I'd say get something cheap and see if you like it. After that, if you like it, dig a bit deeper and figure out what to try next.

I use dark wash to pull out details and for some shadow effect. other than going over the excess stain from the wash with fresh paint, what is the best way to minimize this problem?
I'm with you on the zenith highlighting: honestly I find it does next to nothing for me, and that it just seems like an extra complicated step. By the time I shade, drybrush, and edge highlight I don't know if it added anything at all to the result.

For those of you without the ability to use EITHER airbrush or rattle/spray cans, you can get a decent Zenithal by dry-brushing with a soft, make-up brush, brushing in a direction from the top of the model towards its bottom.

For anyone who doesn't have one of those handles, water jugs work really well to blu tack your minis on. It creates a little slope to rest your hand on for fine control too.
