Emma Watson most likely agreed to do the movie but not need to promote it as much (Emma would have some leverage here as the movie would need a replacement for Emma Stone of a near-equal caliber). She also wasn't nominated for a big acting award which would just about make her promote the movie to campaign for the award. Emma has also since said that she's taking a break from acting. The last movie she did before The Favourite was The Circle which she filmed in late 2015 so there's a chance that she wants to distance herself from the industry for a while but couldn't pass up the opportunity to do this film.
I love so much how all of the characters were fleshed out so well compared to the other adaptations. As a lover of the novel, I greatly appreciated the integrity Greta had in the way she approached this film.
