You have those Amazon boxes. You could have used them to make a template, before you cut the wood for the floor ;) But the steps looks great ! That will be so nice to walk around and go on and off the boat!
There can be a problem using wire wool as it leaves behind tiny metal dust and filings that rust lke hell and you're back to a rusty shaft again within hours...
You probably know but you can make your own weather proof ply with polyester resin thinned down with acetone and just rolled or painted on , lightly sanded and painted a colour of your choice, should last for years. Great job so far mate.
Evening James. Another great update 👍🏻 Watching you on that small boat so reminds me of the children's program Tales of the river bank lol 😂 Take care cheers Stevie 😎
James, don't fall into the oldest DIY trap off all, cutting corners ,making hasty decisions when pushing to get to the finish line, you've done some hard work, slow down, one job at a time.
I don't know if a 12V version of it exists, but you might want to look into what in a house is called a recirculating pump system for the hot water availability problem. They are either attached to a push button or motion detector (not the best for batteries) in the bathroom and turn on a pump that moves the 'hot' water into the cold water line until a set temperature is reached. The water being pumped into the cold water line replaces the hot water being drawn out of the hot water tank/heater, preventing any from being wasted down the drain, or dealing with a jug.
At least that cover will stop the rain for now. Steps look good. Would be nice to see a full cover made for it where you could stand up. Would make a nice drying room. Shoes off room ect.
could you change your gear lever so it is under the floor and have some kind of cable system similar to the throttle control or something like that maybe you might be able to get Paul to do some kind of welding on it to change it
These old Lister gearboxes weren't designed to be cable operated. Even if you rigged up a system something would break before long. But you could use some sort of cranked lever arrangement to reduce the travel of the lever.
a little worried about the strength of that central floor panel with the slit cut into it. have you added any support underneath? Thanks for the vid as always, James. Sounds like a busy week ahead!
As you can see @13:19 he hasnt any support under the slit, if not careful maybe could go through it, Now that would be awfully painful to say the least, although he did say it was temporary, But for How Long?
You can’t put permanent support underneath, you’d have to reinforce the removable panel itself, because the area needs to be empty for engine maintenance. Surely this engine is in more narrowboats and has a better control arrangement in those? Can’t you just call up a chandlery and order that control arrangement for a few hundred quid? More than worth it if so...
Loved it - you remind me of Spike Milligan in Q7 or Q8 just an essence of comedy as you paddled back to the boat. Isn't it possible to rig up some form of actuator to move the gear mechanically into place with an electronic switch? And do away with the huge travel of that lever?
halo james, i am thinking, wath abaut the rainwater in your cokpit??? is et running in your ingning bay? im not good in english writing hope you can understand my bad writing
how do { hot water saver method } at you furthest water tap from your hot tank add a stop valve from a tee branch with a return pipe back to storage tank you can operate the valve briefly until hot water reaches the tap the flow of water will just feed straight back to storage no need for wasting water or containers to tip water back to the main tank
ok James, is there no way to use a teleflex cable to control the gearbox and fix the handle next to the throttle? you can add a length of steel to the gearbox selector to give a mechanical advantage that would make the gear selection easier. Or are you just aiming to have a single morse cable? or are you just going to just leave the lever? I got all confuzzled! Nice to see you back!
I believe, that's the second water container you got, you'll be ready for a long trip. I smile seeing the dinghy's "Captains Chair". ;-D If I heard correctly (some time ago) you plan to move that gear lever closer to the railing and adjust it for easier use (no multi-gear choices)? ;-)
The cover may not be there after Thursday if you get the winds we're forecast James. I guess the sooner you get a fitted pram cover the sooner you'll have a workable space at the stern and protection for the whole engine compartment. Is there nothing that can be done to shorten the throw of the gear lever, it's too excessive and going to be a real nuisance in future?
You should really find a way to secure the steps so nothing bad happens when visitors come or you are too tired to watch your step. Temporary solutions stay that way only until something bad happens.
I’m not a huge fan of the idea of taking previously heated water from the shower and then tipping it back into the fresh water tank. That’s a recipe for legionnaires disease and algae. You could use that unusable grey water to flush your toilet, if you’re getting a toilet that does flushing.
I so enjoy watching you build your boat

CAD! Cardboard Aided Design.
James it would be a good idea to wire wool and oil your prop coupling before it gets even more rusty mate
Love it. Well Said that man🙌🙌

@@theworth123 scotchbrite won’t do that.
@@JasperJanssen I second that too...
@@theworth123 Yes totally agree Tony i should have said it must be cleaned down totally before applying the oil or a light coat of spray on grease
Great vlog again ... really cracking on now 👌 I get a buzz watching you work hard 🤣🤣 stay safe 🙏
Hi James, The best way to hold your bilge pump in place, Is stick your magnet 🧲 on top
Of it and it’s there for life, The boat is coming along now 👍👍
Use the cardboard for templates. It’s coming along. We all enjoy your vlogs. Enjoy~ 👍
Yep back deck looks good. Much better!

4:34 look at the guy in the background, that is why I love the canals :)
That’s narrowboat hands is it not
It is him ..wow
. Lol. Cheers Bill
That’s looking great. Much safer. Well done

In the states, it’s called diamond plate. It’s metal that has a raised pattern so it’s anti slip. It makes good stair treads, too,

I was thinking the same thing. A few pulleys, some angle iron, and a bloke with an arc welder. Job's a good 'un.
Batten down the hatches because Wednesday has to be really windy. 45mph.

(I'm assuming it's a mechanical box - if it's hydraulic, then cable would work)
Hi James I think that cover should go under the tiller arm then it will go right down at the back and give you the angle for the rain to run off
Water is also nice to use as movable ballasts
Nice one James.
Top Stepping Young James :-)

Yeah, that lever was terrible design idea by someone. Hopefully he can find a combo throttle & gearshift control head for morse cable controls.

The screws in your stove metal heat shield tell me that they would really really love to be countersinked! :)
I’d make that middle one out of steel. The slit will weaken it so much that someone might crack it and fall through
halo james, i am thinking, wath abaut the rainwater in your cokpit??? is et running in your ingning bay? im not good in english writing hope you can understand my bad writing

Speaking as a former plumber, I think that's a great idea!
Hi, could you not get a linkage designed/fitted to reduce the travel on the gear selector? Shouldn't be that complicated, or even fit a Morse control?
Morse controls don't work with this type of gear selector.
But, certainly, a better arrangement is possible.
Just found your channel James and it’s really easy watching. Now going to start from the beginning and follow the journey . Thanks for sharing.
How are you keeping the rainwater from flooding your engine bilge and bay?
On present evidence, he isn't!
Hi James, I sit with the fear the dingy is going to tip you in the cut!!!! Take care and look after yourself.

Meccano for helping to designing a gear linkage? Cheers.

Who else waved back at 4:34? 😃
James please set up a microphone
The sound quality is terrible on this video .
Mostly due to environmental noise. There’s only so much you do about that in an active boat yard.
Instead of a slit, why not just use a mechanical linkage under the deck to to up to a standard narrowboat control?
You keep it up you are going end up in the cut. Please be careful

Floor panels look ropey... Don’t waste all you hard work with a bad finish would be a shame to see
They match the rest of the boat.
