Nah, it was difficult for a dragon game. There were some mechanics that were harder than today's games. It was ridiculously. Especially those fat tanky monkeys. 😂@@calmghosts
"literally the first" if you didnt word it like that i could let you off. this game is not like elden ring. the experience is nothing like elden ring. its not the 1st of the souls-like genre. its not the 1st of the hack n slash genre. its not the 1st fighting game. its not even the 1st SPYRO game of this style....... but glad that people liked it even though ive never played it. heroes tail was pretty good, hopefully this game existing at least allows for a new possible spyro game that can have more to learn from. not sure why they made a game with one of the coolest dragons ever but they made his tiny little paws and legs be his main attacks somehow. that should probably have just been a smaller style of gameplay or they could've made it another new playable character or a powerup. at least with more games in the series, even if they're midrange quality, it should help speed up game devs and publishers desire to get another game out to cash in on larger audiences who've played at least, or even just 1, in the expansive series
I have to glom on this series for a minute- excuse me- What an astoundingly fun time. For all it’s many flaws, the legend series is one of the cornerstones of my childhood and one I revisit often. The first I ever played was The Eternal Night... and man, it completely reshaped my mind. Ever since playing I’ve had a deep love of dragons, fantasy... and more specifically, dark and otherwise mature fantasy. This game’s eery, mystical tone just captivates me. The incredible score, ghostly lighting and great level design... plus really solid voice acting and intense combat... it all just goes together so well. I’ve played The Eternal Night at least 10 times... and have about 60 hours on Dawn of the Dragon lol. Love it. It’s a fantastic deviation from the original Spyro, and for me, a very welcome change from the kiddy tone of the first few games. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the first few games (plus the Reignited trilogy) but more on that later. What really gets me about this series is the story. Sure, it’s nothing ALL that special or unheard of... but it just works so beautifully. It’s a classic hero’s journey; familiar and fun, but still manages to surprise you with a few twists and turns. Cynder’s entire character arc is a good example of this. Your foe... to a force along the sidelines... to your trusted ally and friend? Gives me chills. I absolutely adore her character and her place in the series. But back to the main point; THE STORY. The epic, jaw-clenching story. From Spyro’s unwitting exile, to him reuniting with Ignitus and so much more... followed by his dealings with the Chronicler and his journey to the Well of Souls? THEN reawakening after years only to find a desolate world racked by the Dark Master, Malefor? It’s all woven together so well throughout the three games... and finally meeting Malefor at the end really feels like coming face to face with evil incarnate. The source of it all. The reason for everything. (On a side note... I do wish they’d given Malefor a normal voice. His semi-typical “monster voice”... kinda detracts from his villainy a bit... that and the fact it’s hard to understand him. But I digress). Also Spyro’s ties to Malefor? And their “we’re not so different, you and I” dynamic? Classic and it WORKS. I really love a villain who’s a reflection of the hero. It allows for so much more emotional weight and intimacy in the plot. It’s levels like the Destroyer that really stand out to me when talking about the epic nature of the story. I mean, what a wild ride! Spyro’s journey up the Well of Souls is another... though much more dismal, dreary and hopeless, which I quite like. The mysteriously dark tone of the Eternal Night’s final chapter left me feeling bittersweet at the end... and even though Spyro and Cynder survive their three year sleep... idk... something about it always gets to me. A lot of people regard the Eternal Night as the weak link... and while I understand that, I still really enjoy it. Probably because it’s the first Spyro game I encountered. But man... I could go on and on (as I already have) about this series. It’s criminally underrated and regarded as “edgy dark fantasy” which it is NOT. I don’t subscribe to the whole idea that the legend series is some “edgy” attempt at appealing to teenagers of the time. Sure, it’s tonally darker than kiddy kiddy Spyro, but it’s by no means cheesy in its grim nature. It makes it work, and the tone is well balanced. Hints of comedy and heartfelt moments throughout. Like I said, it’s far from perfect... and the janky combat present in the first few games knocks it down a wrung. But if you get passed that, the journey across the three games really is amazing. And so nostalgic for many. Now’s the part where I criticize the original Spyro, so if you’re a fan of the bouncy purple guy, look away now. I DO NOT understand why people regard the original Spyro games so highly. I mean... I understand it was impressive for its time (technologically speaking) and that it was quaint and well put together. But in the face of something so profound and epic as the legend series... why does the original Spyro get all the love while it’s left in the dirt? The original Spyro is just... so empty to me. It’s devoid of any kind of challenge... or any kind of story. Just simple, basic “go get this” plot. And the gem collecting IRKS ME. Seriously. The monotonous, repeating grind of gem finding throughout each. And. Every. Level becomes so boring. It wouldn’t be so bad if the game didn’t decide to gate-keep you on the amount of gems you collect. Like oh? You didn’t get every single f*cking gem in every tiny hole in every level? No ending for you! Sorry... like ugh. I could never play it for more than 2 or 3 hours as it would just get so old. Not the case with the legend series for me. The story and lack of tedious gem collecting kept me interested for hours and hours. I’m not saying the original Spyro is bad, because it’s the opposite! It’s very good and well crafted, and I see why so many people like it. But I just don’t get why it’s the “golden son” to the legend series “offbrand/second rate”. The legend series is just... objectively better. It offers everything the original series does and more. Plus, GARY OLDMAN DRAGON. WHAT MORE DO I HAVE TO SAY?? WAKE UP, PEOPLE Anyway... I could prattle on but I’ll take my leave now. Amazing to see the Eternal Night played through in its entirety online... especially for those who maybe can’t play for themselves. And what an excellent and undeservedly shunned series. Man oh man

I agree. A remaster of this series would be amazing. I know most people really like and may even prefer Dawn of the Dragon... but for me... the first two games are superior visually.
