    The first part of the race reminded me of 1973 Belmont, where Secretariat and Sham went at each other early and opened up 10 lengths on the field. If my gramdma was here she would of had flashbacks to that Belmont, but I know she was looking down from heaven with a smile on her face.

    Memories of Secretariat and Sham there. He is a great horse alright. It takes a fantastic athlete to sustain that pressure and let down in the straight so convincingly. Would have liked to seen more than six starts! Stud value massive (and guaranteed). What a great race it would have been between him and Frankel...throw in Winks (Aust) and you would have walked over broken glass to see the race. BUT, throw in Big Red and he would have crushed them all! No horse has gone faster than Secretariat, a massive leap in modern training techniques has not broken that record...it's always arguable, we all love a champion and we all have a favourite. For me, Secretariat was the greatest of them all!

    • @suemich2319
      @suemich2319 Год назад +1

      The 'massive leaps' in training have added only speed (at sprints) not routes and definitely not stamina. Secretariat's records still stand. Can't realistically compare eras at this point. It's obvious Flightline breathes different air, but he had to be handled just so, to get this far. And now he's gone, which is a shame for the sport.

      We'll never know. Personally I find the Flightline story lacking in mysticism. His two season campaign felt a bit calculated, in fact it was almost too boring for a such an exceptional horse. I don't know, the horse just didn't capture my imagination like Zenyatta or Arrogate did.

    No one can doubt it is a very good horse, but to be a true alltime legend you HAVE to run more than six races. You have to show that you can train on and do it the year after at least. Sadly we will never know now, because people who already have enough money would rather have even more, than give racing fans, and themselves, the joy of watching what COULD have become the greatest of all time if they had kept it racing.

Frankel did win at 10F but the never raced in the Arc or Epsom Derby, both at 1-1/2M, which would have had much larger and deeper fields in terms of quantity and quality. 8 of Frankel's 14 wins had 6 or fewer horses on the field. No doubt he is an all time great. I don't blame the connections for racing him at distances that optimized his chances of winning. Before anyont thinks this very good horse was in the league of Secretariat, think again. Secretariat owns the Ky Derby, Preakness and Belmont records, Flightline has no record times. Secretariat still owns the dirt 1 1/2 world record and that was as a 3 year old. Secretariat raced over 20 times, Flightline 6. On the exact same track Authentic ran a half second faster in the Classic 2 years ago. 2 minutes flat is fast for 1 1/4 but not record breaking. In fact this time only puts Flightline in 9th for the fastest Breeder's Cup Classic and it was on a fast track, lovely weather and he had a perfect trip. Flightline is very good, but the numbers just don't stack up. Trainers in the last 10 years or so are very carful about when and where the big money horses run all with an eye of getting huge $ in stud fees. That's the bottom line and that's the case here. Ditto for Justify or Authentic and American Pharaoh. It's all about $$$$

      @David Turco…It’s unfair to speak about Flightline like that . I watched Sectetariat and yes those were three monster races he ran , but outside of that he proved beatable . I recall a claimer named Onion defeating him in the Whitney and a good horse named Prove Out beating him in the Woodward after spotting him seven lbs. Flightline ran a beautiful race in the Met Mile coming within one second of the world record of Dr. Fager , who was the fastest horse on the planet at a mile . Dr. Fager carried 134 lbs when he set that record , I don’t think Secretariat ever carried even 130 lbs. I could go on but enough said . Flightline was the best horse in training in North America before the BC Classic and proved it when he won it never being hit , just hand ridden under mild urging . Now hopefully he’ll sire some champions like himself . God Bless him .

You mentioned him never carrying more then 130 lbs but you probably know that Secretariat had a huge necks and a huge belly and had more mass to move around the track then most horses. As far as weight being carried by a horse, do you really think a horse carrying 5 lbs more has a disadvantage? The horses are 1200 lbs and I bet 5 or even 10 lbs has no effect on how fast they run or effects their endurance.

And Onion beat him , a claimer . His mile and a quarter time is only for the Kentucky Derby. Spectacular Bid owns the world record for that distance and his time for the Preakness was never officially validated , there were two different times in that race . Dr. Fager carried over 130 lbs in every race during his four year old career that includes the Vosburgh with 139 lbs. and was undefeated. Flightline could have broken a couple of records but his connections and his rider chose wisely In gearing him down under hand rides never touching him with the whip . There was only one Secretariat , one Dr. Fager and one Flightline who were and are great horses . Only time will tell with Flightline when some of his off spring make it to the races .

      @@valerieteti1755 my bad. I was so focused on him that I heard the announcer say 107 and 4 and didn't even look at the time on the screen. The announcer misspoke. All these people barking at his average time is crap. Every race he could have gone much faster but wasn't pushed because he buried all of them. Jock rarely touches him.

      15 mph headwind and restrained last 16th. The ignorant comments on here are incredible. It is well known that Authentic, also a son of Into Mischief (like Life is Good) was inferior to Life is Good. Life is Good, to date, is Into Mischief’s best son. Baffert will tell you this, as he trained both. LIG ended his career in Pletcher’s barn. By the way, Flightline’s syndicate value was just put at 184 million dollars, dwarfing the 1973 valuation of 6 million for Secretariat.

      @@hankmoodiness7941 That’s a ridiculous comparison. Secretariat’s syndication was nearly 50 years ago. Before you say anything about people’s “ignorant” statements take a look at yours.

      LOL. This was the Breeders Cup Classic, Bro. It's 10F bro. It was vs the best the horses in the world, Bro. Annnd...for the record.... Flightline won 6 races, by 71 lengths. Vs Dubai world cup winner and other Grade 1 winners, from 7f up to 10f. No one ever even CLOSE ....ANNNND...never asked to even run. He woulda ran a 1:58 and change in PC if asked. Secretariat had 3 attempts at 6-races in a row. Never did win in the way Flightline did, annnnnddd EVEN with 3 attempts at 6 races in a row, (Flightline got 1 attempt), Secretariat couldn't even win 6 races in a row. In addition to that, he lost 25% of the time he raced. 25% of the time Secretariat stepped on the track, he lost. I'm not saying Flightline is better than Secretariat. I'm saying there is PLENTY of info to make the argument that he is as good or better than Secretariat. Right away, when someone compares a 10F race vs the best 3, 4 and 5 year olds in the world to 12F race of US bred 3-year olds, lol...I immediately know they are a casual fan that knows zero about horse racing.

    I'm not denying the horse is very good, but really the hype is well over the top. The US pool of horses this year has been abysmal. Even the Breeders Cup was a weak affair. Epicentre retired and Life is good didn't get the distance. You only have to look at the turf. Europe send a set of 2nd stringers and wipe the floor. Come on guys, get real.

      It’s disappointing for racing that Flightline has been retired. I’d loved to have seen him return next year to run in the Dubai World Cup & perhaps go for the Classic again. I think he’s a freak, but money talks & they said after this race that he’ll possibly make $40 million dollars in his first year alone as a stallion.
