    I defy anyone to be able to understand what the hell Robert is singing about because his voice is absolutely smothered in the mix!
    That was my big pet peeve when this song came out back in the day. The band just sounded spent, and it's no wonder. But all these years later I can appreciate the flavor and mood of their latter work, and it has aged like a fine wine, no cliche intended.

    • @heliotropezzz333

      Some of the lyrics are quite critical of Jimmy Page but not by name, because of his failure to support Plant when Plant's son died while LZ were on tour. It's no wonder Jimmy smothered Robert's voice in the mix. Robert Plant said something like, the person that this is about is going to realise it one day. (I'm paraphrasing not quoting here as a I can't recall the exact quote). A lot of it is about the band and the risks of their lifestyle and the outcome of that for Plant.

      Not understanding what he's saying does absolutely nothing to detract from the song for me, his voice is just another instrument in the mix..it's a masterpiece

      I honestly think that if Plant's voice and the lyrics had been clearer, it wouldn't have been the same song. I think the fact that the lyrics were essentially drowned out really made the song more powerful. You have to listen even more closely.

    This is a copy/paste of my explanation of this song from a previous reaction. There is SO much in this song that I want to do it justice and give a thorough response. My apologies to anyone who's already read this from me: I adore this song; it is emotional, intense and I consider to be Zep's most prog rock. The vocals are a bit buried under the instrumentation, but the lyrics describe the entire arc of Led Zeppelin to that point and Robert's anger over the lack of support he felt after his son passed. Everything was basically milk and honey when they started ("all was joy and hands were raised towards the sun as love in the halls of plenty overrun"). It described how strong and powerful the group was ("and everything is soon, no sooner thought than deed but no one seemed to question anyway"). However, devastation was lurking ("How keen the storied hunter's eye prevails upon the land to seek the unsuspecting and the weak"). After the tragedy ("Who cares to dry the cheeks of those who saddened stand") the band had to figure out what to do ("...and make the 'status plan'") would Plant want to continue? What was going to happen? In the slowed down middle, part of the lyrics are "Where was your word, where did you go?" and "Where was your helping, where was your bow?" These parts are believed to be addressing Peter Grant and Jimmy specifically as Robert felt "Adrift on a sea of futile speech". From earlier songs, the cracks were already there but I think it was the aftermath of Karac's death that completed Robert's inner break with Zeppelin ("Release the grip, throw down the key") even if, outwardly, he was still in the band. At one point near the end, Robert yells "They had to stay!" I think the lyric is there because out of the group only Bonzo went back with Robert and was present at the funeral. Why? Some say the rest of the band didn't want to add to the already media frenzy during such a difficult time, some say they should have done *something*. Later in the mid-90s, when Jimmy and Robert reunited for Unledded, they would perform In The Evening but during the middle, work in the middle lyrics of Carouselambra but changed, so instead of "Where was your word, where did you go?" etc., you might hear "Where did you come from, where did you go? Strong was your armor, dark was your bow." You should read the full lyrics of the song; their private story is almost painful to hear out loud. Thank you for your indulgence for this long post.

      @@gerhardbraatz6305 it sounds like it, doesn't it? The addictions in the band weren't helpful, but even if Bonzo lived and he and Jimmy could clear their addictions, Robert wanted more control of the musical direction. All three remaining members have said Zeppelin songwriting/recording was fairly democratic in that any of the 4 could bring something in and if they agreed it was good, it got used and vice versa. Would the others have liked where Robert seemed to want to go musically (based off his solo work)? Who knows? Alas, it is always sad to get to the end of their catalogue, knowing what happened.

    I always liked this one. A standout track for many reasons. Surrealism in the sense that it sounds like an alternate reality game show, like Price is Right. Come on down! Then someone on ludes and LSD tries making their way thru the fog to take their place amongst the other contestants, only to find that either they can't reach their place to compete in the game, which is life&death. Then the quicksand like bits that Page slips in. If you take nothing else away from that ramble, just think of a 1970s game show. Think of COME ON DOWN! and the synth intro, hell the entire thing until that sludgy bit comes in.

Since then, I've mentioned it a few times (ok, ok.... a lot!🤦‍♀️😂)!! I couldn't help it, that song is special and in regard to what you said.... I've never considered it a sad song.🤷‍♀️ I think it's a beautiful heart felt song filled with nothing but the purest love from a father to his child!! Funny thing is, that song has been used at weddings for decades now!! The sentiment is universal.... it's simply an expression of the purest love.💯🥰
      And yeah, "I'm Gonna Crawl" is one hell of a bluesy masterpiece!! Robert's scream towards the end gives me chills every time I've ever heard it!! It'll be interesting to see what Biz thinks for sure! Although, I'm pretty sure "relationship Biz" is gonna have some riveting commentary on the lyrics!😂🤣😅😅

    In hindsight, its interesting to consider where Zeppelin were going as the eighties approached. Obviously it was a very dark time for the band personally, as has been documented. Listening to Darlene and Wearing & Tearing, which were outtakes from these sessions, this record could've had a much harder edge. But the album was to be more experimental as it turned out, this track among them, and maybe Plant and Jones prevailed over Bonham and Page on direction. It would take another six years for Page to emerge from his chemical drift of this period, and the loss of Bonham was decisive.

    • @tektoniks_architects
      @tektoniks_architects 2 года назад

      I think you have it exactly right. Jimmy was certainly struggling with his additions, and Robert/JPJ had control of this album. In some sense, I believe Bonham's death may finally have given Jimmy the impulse to get clean....had Bonham not died, would Jimmy have ever gotten control of his demons? We'll never know. But Jimmy was not in control of this album, and that is why it is so different than every other Zep album - when Jimmy was in enough control to steer the ship where he wanted.

    • @Ed9870
      @Ed9870 2 года назад

      @@tektoniks_architects Thanks I think that part of Jimmy's descent into the ether started around the time of Presence, and the three weeks of 20 hours marathons to complete that work. Then the ill-fated 77 tour, which let's be honest, was dodgy by Page standards. Then the malaise before the Outdoor sessions, followed by a very dodgy mini-tour of Europe in summer 1980. After Bonham's loss, who died at Page's mansion, he didn't touch the guitar for a long period thereafter. The Death Wish soundtrack and XYZ sessions were it. Then he is talked into the ARMs tour with Clapton and Beck, and he looked and played emaciated. Credit to Paul Rodgers for pulling him back off the cliff, because Jimmy Page is one of a handful of generational talents of any era, and is among the Mount Rushmore of classic rock artists in my book.

    Perhaps one of their most misunderstood tracks. It’s DECEPTIVELY easy sounding too. Go ahead and try to play along to it. John Paul had just taken delivery of a new Yamaha GX-1 keyboard….thing (as he put it.) Duel keyboards, full pedal board - all the bells n whistles. Immediately he started writing and this song is the magnum opus which came from it. The band were split in two camps by now. Robert and John Paul showed up to the room on time everyday - while Jimmy and Bonzo were still in the grips of their under the table addictions and showed up at night time to do their parts. Seeing as they paid for the room, there was no sense in wasting time so Jones took the reigns and pushed forward, with Robert right there with him, and basically wrote this entire album. The lyrics during the breakdown say it all and Jimmy had reason for burying them in the mix. “Where was your word, where did you go? Where was your helping, where was your bow?” He’s referring to Jimmy’s absence during the darkest time in Robert’s life: the passing of his 6 year old son, 18 months prior to these sessions.
