Hi Gary
I have this program and this video has taught me some information l didn't know, thank you and get well soon.
Thank you Jim.
This program has many things I have not even tried.
Amazing software.
Doing better but the weather is really bad and we lost power.
Thanks,
Gary
Thanks so much, Gary. Hope the healing is coming along. I like it when you describe what you are doing on the keyboard. Like “hold down the control key whole clicking”. That really is good instructing. Take care.
Thank you very much Van. I do have to remind myself you can not see the keyboard.
I see the doctor this Tuesday as long the weather lets us. But it is feeling better. Just can not stand on it for at least a few more weeks.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks, Gary, you are such a great teacher and your instruction is so easy to follow.
Thank you Carol. I know when I learn something new it is much easier if the instructions are simple.
After that it is easier to understand the more complex part of the process. This program can go way beyond what you can imagine.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 This resonates so much with me. This is why I love your videos and the way you explain things.
@@leenoble7472 thank you ☺️
Good evening, Gary.
Thanks for the computer software demo and explanation. Excellent.
Hi Ray,
Happy you like it.
A real mess around here. About 12 degrees and wind. A giant fir tree came down and landed on the house the next street over. It would have hit us if it came this way. Every time the wind blows hard for the last 50 years I thought about that.
I am stuck using a walker since I messed up my ankle so I do not move very fast
A bunch of snow as well. Not the usual Oregon weather.
Thanks Gary, another very good video on how to use Woodturner Pro! I knew some of what you showed but as usual you expanded my knowledge, well done!
Cheers Al
Thank you very much Al. Since you use it you also now how much more it will do. Maybe we will get into some of that soon.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I love the way you explain everything. Thank you so much for this video.
Thanks so much Lee I appreciate your comment.
Gary
Thank You Gary... You have my imagination warming up...(with LOTS of mugs of u-know-what!!!!)....TM
Thanks TM. I have a mug of the same!
Gary
I like listening to you describe how to use the software and your process for bringing a piece to fruition. The excitement in your voice is kinda like a little kid in a candy store! More importantly, your end result is always amazing! I'm glad you have this knowledge to share with us while you heal up. Also, I guess your predicament is keeping you away from the snow shovel! LOL! At least, that's the way the weather people are making it sound. Did you guys get hit pretty hard? Take good care, buddy, we'll see you on the next one! 😊
Phil
Thanks Phil.
Well I do enjoy this and it is very exciting to see it happen the way I plan.
It is way worse than you can imagine. Combination of 14 degrees and constant wind has taken many trees down and we have lost power for 24 hours now.
The worst fallen tree is one of 3 I have shown in a video with them swaying in the wind. The center tree which was the biggest and well over a hundred years old fell over yesterday morning. I guess lucky for us it fell the other direction and landed on the house on the next street over taking a big slice out of it. They're over there now change signing it up trying to get the pieces off the house so they can cover it. Pretty sad. Friends of ours have had two trees fall on their property and luckily didn't do any damage. Another friend down our road had a huge fir tree fall and just missed his house. So no fun and games here in garden home and I can't get on my computer to do another video which I have planned on using a really cool add-on to this software.
My issues now is I have a appointment with the surgeon to look my ankle over this Tuesday and it's talking about freezing rain on Tuesday so I'm not sure how I'm going to get over there.
But this is Oregon and they change the weather forecast every 5 minutes.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Wow, that sounds awful, Gary! It's all awful but losing power is the worst. Do you have some way to heat your house? Generator? Who's gonna set that up for you? Man, what a mess! Freezing rain? 1, 2, 3, ... that's me counting my blessings. We had snow predicted, didn't happen. We had a high wind warning, 60 mph, didn't happen. It's cold, been in the teens for a few days but finally warming a bit, now. Might make freezing today! Hang in there, buddy!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop we got a fire going in our fireplace insert. I do have a generator but with my foot would not try to get it out. Our youngest son would have done it and only lives 10 minutes away. But he lost power as well.
Good news is the power came on about 2 hours ago.
Just saw the damage to my neighbor's house. It almost split in half. Thankfully it did not come our way as it was a little closer. Feel bad for the neighbors.
@@ThePapa1947 Yay for power! Movie night!
Thanks again Gary! It’s always fascinating to me to watch how these things come together. I’m glad you’re doing the in-depth videos because even though to touch on it when you do a segmented turning video, you can’t spend enough time on it without having a really long video. I hope you’re starting to feel better and can get back on your feet soon! Cheers, Rick
Thank you very much Rick.
I will find out this coming Tuesday what happens next. We only have one step in our house and that is down to the family room. I make 2 trips a day(no I do not trip LOL) down there. That is where the big screen TV is. Also a recliner where I can get my foot up easier.
Oh I spend most of my time in the computer room where I have two guitars out on stands in easy reach.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Glad to hear things are going well and fingers crossed for a good out come. My own little den is also where I’m surrounded by guitars and my iMac.
I have 5 out of the cases and will not mention how many in the case LOL.
@@ThePapa1947 hahaha I love it! Good for you. Mine all hang on a wall or on stands, but I do have a whole closet full of cases!! 😁
Another nice video, Gary. Thank you for all the free wood turning lessons that you have provided over the years. It is very generous of you to give your time and effort to show so many of us the finer ways of turning wood, making segments and the various jigs.
Take care of that ankle!
Again, thanks for your time. That's something we never get back and needs to be appreciated by all who benefit from your videos.
Thank you John. It is really nice to see all the interest in something I have loved since I was a kid in grade school. Happy to contribute what I can to keep this craft going.
Ankle is being nice to me this morning and looking forward to this coming Tuesday to see how it is doing. Maybe become a little more mobile,
Thanks,
Gary
Thank you for the tutorial, Gary. 😊😊
Thank you Rob 😊
Great explanation, Gary! Very clear! Thanks for sharing! 👏👏
…..Gord
Thank you Gord. I appreciate you watching. Hope all is good up north where you are at
Nasty weather here. Trees coming down everywhere and power out. We just got ours back on.
Take care buddy,
Gary
Hey Gary ... Thanks for doing these videos. I have been using Lloyd Johnson's software for several years now, and your videos are excellent refreshers! Hope you are on the mend and can be back at the lathe soon, but in the meantime keep these coming!
Thanks Gerald,
He has made great software.
I see the doctor Tuesday and hopefully good news.
Feels better but hopping around on one foot is wearing me out.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That was really good, Gary. I don't know if I will ever be around using software like this but what it does do is help me understand segmenting and designing further and I always appreciate that because it's like a nice little puzzle that I don't have to solve. heal well my friend
Thank you very much Jay. I think it is fun even if you do not make segmented turnings. I recall the days of no software for this but still possible to make segmented turnings. This just gives you a good vision and can make changes on the fly. Just another tool for sure.
Doing ok here thank you,
Gary
Thanks for the easy tutorial.
Thank you Bren I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Thanks, Gary. Seeing how this software works is very helpful. I have been sitting of the fence about buying something ... so far I have been using a free segment calculator but, it doesn't let you see what the bowl will look like. I will have to give some thought about buying this package ... I am on a semi-fixed income so the decision is not always easy or simple.
Thank you Qapla. If you are able to get it I am sure you will really like it. If not you can still enjoy what you are doing.
Take care,
Gary
Thank you Gary, I hope your recovery is going well.
Thank you very much Dwight. Going ok I think. I have an appointment this coming Tuesday and will learn more.
But we have freezing rain coming. My truck would do fine but not sure my wife would want to drive it if it is icey. I an not because it is my right foot that is messed up.
We have other options if needed.
Thank you,
Gary
Nice - very clear!
Thank you Maria 🙂
Looks good, Gary! I just do mine on paper...
Thanks Billy...paper works fine. At work we laid everything out on paper.
Thank you Gary,
Thank you Kevin and thanks for watching.
Gary
You da best gary
Thanks so much Joey!
Thanks Gary!
You are very welcome and thank you for watching Chris!
I have the full suite of Woodturner Pro products. I much prefer Woodturner Pro over Segment Pro. I can do staves or customize each row with WP. Thanks for the video.
Totally agree Stevio. So does Lloyd the designer of the software.
Looks like a really great package for the types of turnings you do and really appreciate seeing how it works. Since I'm exclusively a Mac and Linux operation (OK, my 92 year-old mother has a Windows machine on our network), I'll have to see if this runs in CrossOver. I'm kind of curious.
Hope your healing is progressing well.
Thank you Mark. I run the program a lot using Remote Desk Top. From a Windows machine to a Windows machine.
I am guessing a Mac can do this?
I see the doctor this coming Tuesday if weather lets us. Might be icey by then. Very cold right now 15F. Cold for us anyway.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Yes, that is a possibility, that's how I run my CAD program. It lives on a linux system and I use RDP to access it from the Mac so that would be a possibility
@@MarklTucson perfect.
We just lost power here so no PC work for a while.
Real cold and heavy winds.
😞
Hello Gary. Chuck here. This video is helpful for me also for seeing how the control key works. And I did not realize how the snap key works either. Both of these will save me a lot of time. So thanks. May I ask what is the best method for attaching the disk to the lathe? Thanks very much.
Hi Chuck,
Happy it helped.
Most of the time I will hit glue it to a pre made tenon made from scrap.
If I put a solid bottom on I hit glue the tenon to it.
Gary
Great Chuck. I have more coming. We lost power here.
Got it back but no Internet on my PC. I will get them when I can.
Gary
Great videos Gary and I wish you a speedy recovery. I see that the software generate the edge length but what/how do you measure 2.05 inch length? That would be 2 1/20 inches Do you use a special ruler or transfer to some other unit of measure or just rough guess that length to maybe just 2 inches?
Thank you Don. I use digital calipers to measure.
Thank you very much and sorry for the late reply. Had an ankle injury.
Gary
Very clear and well presented, as always! I made the stop block you made in your earlier video and it's a great improvement over what I was using...I like bringing as much precision to my work as possible. Thanks! Looking forward to the Tinkercad video you alluded to, and I'm hoping you'll throw in a recommendation for a 3D printer!
Thank you Israel. Happy the stop block is working for you.
I am using the Ender 5-S1 printer and really like it a lot. I think the price has really dropped on it as well.
TinkerCad next week and an update on what my doctor says this coming Tuesday. As long as we can get there.
We have very cold weather and ice is expected.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hi Gary and thanks for all you do... One silly question, if I may... Does WoodTurner Pro have metric units? Thanks.
Yes it does have metric as an option. I have not used it though as I use imperial with decimals.
@@ThePapa1947 Looks good, thank you.
Gary, great explanation of the program. I just started using woodworking pro and I made two bowls so far. one of my hangups is cutting all the different rows to the different board widths. It drives me crazy trying to calculate how many rows of different widths I can cut from a particular board. Example- I have a 5.5 in board and I have 4 different width rows such as .5”, .75, 1.5 and 1.75. Is there a program or easy way to figure out a cutting diagram that will help me use the 5.5 in board efficiently?
Again great videos! Thanks again
Thank you Bruce.
I just add the widths in my head and sometimes stop if there is a scrap big enough for a wider width. Usually I will only have 1 or 2 wider rows. Normally the bottom 2.
Not scientific but it works.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I don't typically use more than one wood for a given vase and I have two table saws. I set the old one up to rip sticks and the good one with the DRO to crosscut segments.
1. Sort all the rings dimensions by board width and cut a stick 2 to 3 feet long at the widest board width you need.
2. Cut all the segments you need for that width. If you run out of stick first, rip another one and finish that segment set.
3. At some point, you'll have a full segment set for that width but have leftover stick. Either rip it down to the next narrower board width and start cutting that ring's segments or ignore the width change and start cutting segments a bit too wide, The excess will be on the inside and be turned away anyway.
Every stick gets used up completely and I don't have to plan ahead to maximize wood use. I drove myself crazier when I tried to match up various board widths and lengths to the stock I had in front of me. I invariably came up short here and long there with a big pile of useless pieces of expensive wood several inches long.
Thank you!
Thank you I appreciate you watching.
Gary
Nicely described Gary.
Keeping this one as well.
Are these programmes free or do you need to buy them?
Take care my friend.
Hwyl, Huw
Thank you Huw. No they are not free but in my opinion for what they do they are pretty darn cheap.
You can do a 30 day free trial though.
Hwyl,
Gary
Good Demo Gary. I need more help with these pieces of software.
Lowell
Thank you Lowel. It is a great software. You can do some thing easy and then way more advanced.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Hey I can stop video and do a close up of the buttons. The files or they something that you make ?
Yes those are files I made.
Hi Gary...i am soooo tempted to get this software...i am not real computer savvy...do you think the entire group of applications is necessary and worth it
Well getting all 3 programs is worth it because of the savings.
Do you need all 3? Well no but myself I mostly use Woodturner Pro and Lamination Pro. Those 2 are very important to me. Segment Pro is a fantastic program and probably easer to get started on.
I prefer Woodturner Pro just because You are in control of what you are making.
So I do not want to sound like a salesman and get nothing for saying this but:
If you buy two(which you should as you save a lot) for $30.00 more you get all 3.
Download it and use it for free for 30 days is the best way to tell.
Gary
I tried several free programs and some free trial programs before deciding Segment Pro was worth the money. When I mentioned it to my wife, she surprised me with the full program set and I'm glad she did. These tutorials are helping me get even more out of them.
No it’s too cold in your shop !! 17 here near Seattle!
I know and we are supposed to have freezing rain Tuesday. And that is when I see the doctor.
