- When I go exploring by train, one of my favourite things is to look for small, sometimes rural, train stations, especially ones that are used very often. I recently found one such station on the shores of Lago Maggiore near Locarno in Switzerland: Ranzo-Sant'Abbondio. It’s served by mainly two-hourly services on the S30 line between Cadenazzo and Luino.
I visited Ranzo-Sant'Abbondio on a balmy early September evening, first by taking a boat from Locarno to Magadino then a connecting bus to Sant’Abbondio followed by a short walk up to the station.
Apart from the occasional Postbus passing by the station (and a freight train unexpectedly passing through), I had the station to myself. As you can see it has amazing views of Lago Maggiore and is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing beer before I took the train back to Locarno.
