- The Daytona 500 is both the biggest race due to prestige as well as the biggest race due to the incredible and sometimes unbelievable moments that the superspeedway racing style produces. One of the biggest if not the biggest of these would be that of Trevor Bayne who won the 2011 Daytona 500 with the famed Wood Brothers #21 car. So today we look back at this moment in NASCAR history and see how the day worked itself out. This is the greatest underdog victory in Daytona 500 history.

What are your favorite Daytona 500 moments?
i’m a truex fan, i don’t like Daytona.
2005 Daytona 500
Favorite is probably seeing McDowell (Supremacy) win the 500 in 2021.
1998 was my first NASCAR race I watched on TV, got hooked ever since
2021 won me a few thousand dollars for the long shot win
I will say this though. You're in 2011 I loved both the truck race the Xfinity race and the cup race those races were good that year
It’s an even bigger deal when you consider the fact that the Wood Brothers missed the Daytona 500 entirely a few years previously.
And the Wood Brothers continue to race today with Harrison Burton. Waiting for win 100 for the legendary old school Nascar team.
Even if Bayne did nothing else in cup, it is still really cool to see a driver so young win such a big race.
2011 Daytona 500 was by far the best one I’ve ever watched. Tandem drafting at plate races are easily the most overhated thing in Nascar
tAnDeM dRaFtInG wAs bOrInG!
I loved the tag team drafting.
I loved Tandem Drafting Man
Yep I recently rewatched the 2011 Daytona 500 too. 😅
It doesn’t matter how you look at his career. At the end the day he is a Daytona 500 champion. You can’t take it away from him
I always think back to Danny’s video on how this victory was debatably what saved the Wood Brothers from becoming an irrelevant team.
Another underdog win at the Daytona 500 was Derricke Cope's in 1990. Overshadowed by Dale Earnhardt blowing his tyre on the final corner of the final lap, Cope was in the right place at the right time to capitalise on Dale's misfortune
Happy Birthday Trevor Bayne 20 years old!!!
Edit: 9:16, What in the world??? Lol
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. It was so cool to see this car in the Henry Ford museum. The amount of scuffs and damage to the bumpers was awesome.
I literally just watched this whole race last Sunday. I remember seeing it with my late grandfather and I couldn't remember how good it was. Probably one of my all time favorite races now.
I think the 2011 Daytona 500 is pretty underrated
Anybody else see the fast forward at 9:16?
That move by Labonte to make Edwards push Bayne was one of the chaddest moves.
I was 8 years old and I remember some bits and pieces from this day, when DW interviewed Trevor on the pace laps, I had a feeling he was gonna win this race.
The 2011-2012 Gen 5 Cars were 🔥
Being a huge Bobby LaBonte fan and watching this race live I was really hoping he could have pulled it off as he never won the 500, but Bayne winning with the championship help behind him on that final restart is still fine by me, I'll always know who won Bayne that race, lol
Same here!! I loved that Bayne won the race but a part of me also wanted to see labonte win one last time
It's still poetic that Bobbys last win was the last Winston race
Our family went down to Florida from 2005-2012. Me and my brother’s first 500 was ‘06…that was a miserable race, it quite literally never stopped drizzling. We sat on the SuperStretch like usual way up high, and anyone who was there will tell you *you could hear a mouse fart*. Yes, even when the cars passed. It was a surreal moment I’ll never forget. I’ll always be able to say ‘I was there!’ It wasn’t even five minutes until the pack went poof and those tandems formed.
Regardless, we got to see NASCAR at its’ peak in popularity, wandering through a sea of 100,000 people to the post-COT era that became the Gen 6 car. What amazing times!!
This was the first 500 I remember watching fully. It was great and I remember specifically saying “man this Trevor Bayne guy is going to win a lot of races!” That aside, the call is also permanently etched into my brain.
"Happy Birthday Trevor Bayne!"
I was here for this race all the way from canada eh! My 2nd nascar race and capped off the end off our honeymoon after a 7 day cruise. Even been to Las Vegas in 2009 I was absolutely blown away in the size and speeds and sorta pack even tho this was the start of the daytona tandem if I remember correctly
I remember watching this race and cheering on Trevor when it was coming down to the final laps and when he came down to block carl edwards I lost mind cheering for him!!
Thanks for sharing! I remember watching the 2011 Daytona 500 at my grandma’s house during her birthday party. I felt badly for Dale Jr. after he crashed out, but I was elated to see Trevor score his first and only Cup Series win in the Great American Race. Along with Junior’s second 500 win in 2014, the 2011 Great American Race is my favorite one (of the 500s I watched live since I became a fan in 2004).
Yep I was in my bedroom watching the 2011 Daytona 500 from start to finish it was incredible.
This was actually the first Daytona 500 I ever watched. It was amazing. I'm going to try and watch the Daytona 500 next Sunday.
My first and only Daytona 500 so far and being from Knoxville was super cool to see Trevor take it home!
Great 500 some of my other favorites/moments are the 2012,2020 500, 16 finish, the fight in 79,dw and dale sr finally winning their 500s
9:17 I thought my phone was acting up, lol
Hearing larry mac say "He did it!" still gives me tears.
I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that this was 12 years ago already when it feels like 5 😮
One thing I remember is that Trevor was worried when he was the leading car because he was afraid that his car was too fast.
Bobby held a damn straight wheel. Absolute chad
It’s almost poetic on lamp three you had Kevin Harvick in the old number three card you had Michael Waltrip, who won the race in 2001 and you had Kurt Busch who was one of the last drivers to have race with Dale Earnhardt up there battling for the lead
9:17 I thought my tablet was acting up for a moment.
1 of the 2 biggest underdog victories that year as well as Regan Smith would get his second career victory in the 2011 southern 500 at Darlington. (Smith won that 2008 Talladega race and no one can tell me otherwise.) The racing was different because of the Tandem Drafting that they had. I don’t understand why Tandem Drafting was hated so much. The one thing Bayne accomplished in his career. After this he fell off a cliff while going to Roush the next year.
the youtube player skip had me TRIPPING thinking my shit was broken lmao
Bruh that opening you had in the video with the song sideways was engraved in my head
So glad I was THERE to see it!!!
The greatest Daytona 500 ever
1998 500 will always be my favorite I remember watching it and my momma started to cry
I still cant believe i was in the stands for this race. My first ever Daytona 500
Think you forgot to cut this out 😂9:17
On February 20, 2011, I had no clue I was taping what would be such a famous Daytona 500. I still have the tape too.
it was because of this race that i became a Trevor Bayne fan. sad to see not see him race in xfinity this year
9:17 I thought my phone was glitching out
I’m weird but probably my favorite 500 is probably 2017.
Watching those deck of cards fall and Kurt Busch comes out Champion on fuel mileage.
My kind of finish.
The second is 2007 Daytona 500 self explanatory.
9:16 is the moment you thought your phone was broken.
Okay, lets go ahead and prepare that knife to just stab me. With me being a Bobby Labonte fan
I was in an airport when the race finished, and I had seen on the TV that a White and Red car won, and I got really excited because I thought it was Texas Terry Labonte at first.
my favorite 500 moment was the one you just discussed
2007 Daytona 500 and this one are the most memorable for me
This is right up there with Derrick Cope winning the 1990 500, the late Dan Wheldon winning the Indy 500 the same year as this & Olivier Panis winning the Monaco GP in 1996 as biggest underdog victories among F1, Indycar & NASCAR. With all of these upset victories including Bayne's, they have in common the fact that the winner took advantage of other's misfortune although in the case of Panis it was more due to the fact that it rained heavily throughout the race and that there was only 2 other cars besides him on track at the end. It also was the final win ever for the Ligier team. The 1996 Monaco GP is easily the biggest wreckfest in F1 history right alongside the 2003 Brazilian GP.
the wreckfest award goes to Spa 1998
Thought my phone broke at 9:20
Another great underdog win is the two David's, Regan and Gilliland vs the field to win Talladega, dubbed Davids vs Goliath
Kevin Harvick beating Mark Martin!! Nails it for me!!!
Life long 4 fan!!!
McDowell winning was on par with this. And it's still early but Cindric might also turn out to be an underdog story if he doesn't continue to win.
I don't Cindric will ever be considered as an underdog because of his team.
1990 Derrike Cope Daytona 500 win was much more of an Underdog Story. Stand-alone underfunded team with a journeyman driver who never made any real noise in the sport rose to the occasion. Yes Dale Sr had a flat tire on the last lap could make one question if it was a fluke win. A few weeks later at Dover they came back from being a lap down to dominate and win the race proving that their Daytona performance was no fluke.
The 2011 Daytona 500 I can remember not being liked for the tandem bump drafting but looking back at it this is an underrated 500.
Yep people said it was good for a few laps but then it became boring but I really didn't see it that way at any point. Pfft
The pride of Knoxville, TN
I miss superspeedways bump drafting when cars paste each and other, one of the things why the COT was better than Gen 6 and current gen.
You forgot to edit the youtube back seconds part 😂 9:17
Man, it sucks that Dale Jr got wrecked on the GWC. Imagine if he'd had time to make a run at the front on that last run and got yet another good Daytona finish, maybe even a 3rd 500 win.
Was cool to see a rookie win it. If you're going to be a 1 hit wonder, having your 1 hit be the Daytona 500 makes it pretty damn worth it.
i predicted his win that year
Dale Jarett winning with his dad cheering him on , twice
who all gave 3 finger when that part of video played
I Was At That Race!!
I'd have to go with Derrike Cope on this one.
W finish
2007 Harvick and Martin
Coincidentally i was watching the 2011 Daytona 500 and finished it.
Sad part is Trevor Bayne would not win again nor would he have any other success in Cup outside of this one race and he really impressed many of the established drivers by working with them and listening to them. And he would also endure some health issues with lyme disease and after that he was never the same driver again which is a shame. Bayne got a lot of looks coming of his Daytona win, but sadly that never materialized.
Dale finally winning.
They should do a silent lap 3 at every Daytona 500
👍🏾👍🏾
I really like tandem drafting just saying
Derrick Cope
Hi
I swore my phone was broken at the end.
Lol. Drove me mad. 9:15
Hmmmm... "Greatest underdog victory"? Methinks not. That honor would go to a guy who showed up at Daytona without a ride and drafted and snuck his way into victory lane long before - Tiny Lund in 1963. But, he WAS in the #21, and WAS the Wood Bros first Daytona 500 win.
I was searching the comments waiting to see someone who actually knew about Tiny Lund subbing in for Marvin Panch and winning the Daytona 500. A substitute driver winning that race is easily the greatest Daytona 500 underdog story.
Baynes win trumps McDowell and his win. McDowell had his handed to him via stage racing as it set him up to win
I MISS straight up racing, NO stage racing....
The southern 500 with regan smith was far more impressive of an underdog win
By the way... 21... 2+1 = 3....
Biggest underdog? No…
1990.. Derrick Cope
I I will be lambasted, but in MHO the 9 , 16 , & 24 have been overrated. Not trying my to be controversial but just my observation
I didn't like this Daytona 500, I wanted my favorite driver Jimmie Johnson to win since that Daytona 500 was also my birthday
But just like 2005, my wish didn't come true
and then he did absolutely nothing for the rest of his cup career
I hated that tandem racing. No talent
But it's a terrible story... absolutely awful
1998 Dale V Daytona
*Edit:* Or the 1979 Daytona
Trevor Bayne got on everyone's radar when Jeff Gordon worked with him during practice and commented on how fast he was.
This is the first Daytona 500 I missed. I was in high school, and my choir had a concert that day (in fact, the most important concert in my time in that choir).
Luckily, I witnessed both of Dale, Jr.'s 500 victories, and Denny Hamlin dedicating his 2019 500 victory to JD Gibbs.
Trevor Bayne's Daytona 500 win was awesome but let's be real, Derrike Cope's Daytona 500 win was more unexpected and much more of an underdog. I'm not taking away any credit from Bayne's win, I'm just saying.
Exactly and Cope went on to win at Dover a few weeks later after going to lap down running out of fuel early in the race.
One thing I love about this win, it gets swept under the rug a lot, but it was one of his pre race interviews earlier in the week. I can't remember if it was duels or qualifying, but they were interviewing Trevor and I can't remember who was interviewing him either, but she said "before we came on the air, what did I tell you not to call me because it makes me feel old?" He was like "ma'am, you asked I don't call you ma'am" then she continues with the interview and as they finish he walks away with a "yes ma'am" and I laughed so hard. But at the same time I was like damn what a nice kid. Then a few days later he wins the 500 and I was so happy for him and everyone got the nice guys can finish first story. One of my favorite Speed weeks moments as a fan.
9:16 my phone got water on it and I thought this is what it was doing lol
Trevor Bayne is forever a Daytona 500 champion🙏🏼🏁
If carl would have made the pass for the win, think about how that would affect the 2011 championship
What the hell at 9:16? Caught me off guard
9:18 dude I thought my phone was glitching.... WTF man 😂😂
i've watched this and seen this moment so many times but damn, the way you built it up it gave me chills again. my favorite daytona victory was definitely the 2014 500 with Dale Jr winning. my parents actually let me stay up late to watch it and i didnt get to watch many races when i was younger so to get to watch the big one was very exciting then seeing my favorite driver win the 500 in one of my favorite schemes with the gold 88 truly my favorite one.
The 2016 500 is probably my favorite, some of the closest racing I’ve seen coming to the line, I was sure Truex had it won and then Hamlin edged him out, not to mention it started the string of photo finishes that followed in the next few weeks.
Wtf is going on at 9:17 😭😭 thought I got hacked you gotta start editing your videos bro 😂
I feel like if dale didn’t do what he did in 2004 he would’ve won that championship, and if things where fair in 2015 with the HARVICK incident at talledega, Jr. Advances to the final 4 due to his win at Phoenix, I don’t know if he would’ve still lost the championship cuz I don’t remember what the final 4 where except for Kyle B, I think Jr. COULDVE won 2 championships, and a lot more 500’s if he was at the right place at the right time and not getting turned, but that happens to everyone so I’m not gonna get mad at it
This is a long comment, GEEZ
Why give Dale a three finger salute when one finger is all you need? Biggest hack in asscar history.
Dale Sr’s win when every team gave him a hi five down pit road brings tears to my eyes every time and when Mike says 20 YEARS OF TRYING I about bawl I was so happy for him it still hasn’t set in that he’s gone there is no better driver than DALE 🖤🖤🖤💪🇺🇸
