Tops in the Myer centre (1992)

- Back in the 80's and early 90's there was a small theme park in the Myer centre, Brisbane QLD, Australia.
It was called 'Tops' and featured a dragon roller coaster, merry go round, ferris wheel, swinging ship, tree-hours/playground and more...
It will be missed!
I miss the sound of the Dragon Coaster. It was a highlight of going to the city. I was never allowed to go to TOPS till I was 10 years old. On my 10th Birthday I found out it was closing.
Too many Brisbane Attractions closed and we lost our personality.

It is surprising how much activity there is in the mall in this video, even at night. I haven't seen anything like this over the past decade. It really shows how the mall's role in society has changed.

I worked on the demolition at the Tops site and have fluro lights in my shed from there, as well as heaps of building materials I used in my house when I first became a home owner!!!!

God bless you to whoever uploaded this. So many childhood memories flooding back. So loved seeing Tops. The pirate ship and the roller coaster. And Queen St mall at night - such a wonderful atmosphere. And during a peak time in history - the 90s. I was 10 years old in 92. We lived in West End and Highgate Hill. We left in 1999. Fondest memories of that place. All my aunties and uncles and my mum now all deceased. But they collectively made our childhoods magic ❤
That's still a very familiar sound to me, the sound of that dragon coaster. I never went on it as I was quite reluctant to being so high up off the ground, but I did go on quite a few of the smaller rides. The glass elevators in the Myer Centre might still be there (although since refurbished), but very much *everything* in and around the Queen Street Mall has changed since then.

Wow... I just remembered this dragon coaster... That noise... As a kid it was the BEST ride ever! I read it's being restored... It was rusting in the backyard of a man near Brisbane...

OMG WOW thanks for the nostalgia trip!! The year you filmed this I was in grade 12 and used to come here every weekend with mates to hang out and ride the rides all day with the really cheap day passes they had!! We used to deliberately scream as loud as we could on the roller coaster to annoy everyone below us LMFAO!!
I miss it so much ..ile never forget that sound...I plan on building a replacement for our private kiddy coaster.

22 years later and they still have that same style of elevator. This is really neat, I had no idea this existed.
Neither did I til I rummaged around my old videos and found the footage!
This elevators are slowly being replaced as of this year. They really did last a long time!

I used to work at the Myer centre. Tops didnt disappear. Its still there, they just boarded everything up until future expansion. It sits above the cinemas level. Everything is in original condition, except for the Dragon coaster. The track is still, but the cars are gone. The dragonboat is missing as well.
Was it just shops and the dragon ride upstairs? I don't remember.
Completely different city. Don't get me wrong, racism/ignorance still existed, but was less open/acted upon - as in, I don't care if you hate someone, you don't need to punch them or abuse them. Booze was legal, drugs were around, but king hits/coward punches were practically unheard of. What went wrong? Evil has always existed. But the safety levels have gotten worse and worse since the new millennium.

Security guard caught me spitting gum off the dragon ride and escorted me back to my grandparents. Oh the memories...
Can't help but notice how un "woke" everyone is... You can see by the marching band how miserable everyone was... Gotta feel sorry for them all... Rip Myers centre and rip childhood

The Tops Rollercoaster was very loud and i can remember hearing the screeming and the rollercoaster.

Felt like there was a time when every multi-storey shopping plaza in Australia had glass elevators. No doubt this would've been a great alternative for Brisbaneans who couldn't afford to go to the theme parks on the GC. This looks much better than the indoor theme park they had in Adelaide during the 90s, when did Tops fold?
