Fantastic Sir. I wish I'd seen this before I started my project. Some great advice, especially, regarding cold roof ventilation. My garden room/office has many similarities to your construction. Main difference being, I have an insulated timber floor with OSB boards, and solid timber flooring. I did have my heart in my mouth watching you cut through your EPDM roof. I'd like to build a workshop next, so very interested watching how you constructed your concrete base. Thank you. All in all, a great journey, great result, and very watchable series. Constructions skills is one thing, creating the video content and narrative to match is very impressive . Very impressive all round. Chapeau!
Well that is a fantastic comment - couldn’t wish for better praise! Thanks so much and I’m glad to hear you have your own garden room space - great asset. The hole in the Epdm was my least favourite moment, but so far so good after a wet Winter. All the best and thanks for watching and your comment. Cheers...
Thanks for sharing, nicely presented and fantastic result. It’s very brave to show a build from a diy perspective. Plenty of great tips shown, which includes mistakes. We will all make them on such a project when we don’t have the experience, and some are also just different ways of doing something to end up at the same result. Great job.
Hi Ian- Thanks very much that’s very kind. I thought I should put in a ‘warts and all’ process as it seems more honest to do that, particularly from a DIY’ers perspective. Thanks for watching. All the best...
Watched all of your videos and others to try and get some ideas on how to go about building my own. Like you i am not a tradesman just a DIYer. Have picked up some wonderful tips and ideas along the way. Many thanks for taking the time to video your build. I hope to commence with my own in the spring when the weather improves!
Hi Kevin - Thanks so much for watching and I hope the videos help with your build. Certainly one of the best things I ever built and it’s used throughout the year - allow for plenty of insulation and see if you can get an electric convector heater in. All the best with the build…👍
Been watching all of your videos twice to prepare building my own, thanks so much for taking the effort and putting these videos together! Must've been hard enough to do a build, let alone document it all in this way. Thanks again!
Hi - Thanks so much for that. Great to hear that it will help your build in some way - I also watched loads of RUclips channels before embarking on this and just wanted to add my own project to the list. All the best with your build. Cheers
Hi just watched your playlist building your garden room. What a great job you ve made of it and inspired me now to build a small gym at the bottom of my garden. Every video you ve made explains so much detail I feel I can achieve doing my own now. Your very talented and I look forward to future videos that you make all the best Dean.
Hi Dean - Thanks very much for your kind words. I always search RUclips when I’m having a go a building stuff and I’m really pleased that my video has given you some ideas. Good luck with your build- all the best 👍
Ha ha - Thanks David for the comment - I picked up the straw hat from a Tour of Britain event a couple of years ago, has come in handy when we get a bit of sunshine. Thanks again 👍
Congratulations from West Cork,Ireland on a really super job. I am planning on embarking on a garden room project myself and came across your series of videos. I must say your skill and attention to detail is very impressive and so inspirational. Thank you and wishing you many hours and years of enjoyment in your garden room. Joe O'Driscoll
Joe O Driscoll Thanks so much for your comments - very encouraging. I enjoy the process of putting these videos together with the hope of giving a few pointers to others. I hope your plans for building the garden room work out ok next year. Keep well in the meantime - best wishes from sunny Cumbria ;)
Brilliant job, I really appreciate the effort and time you put into sharing this project. I was planning one for next year and came across your videos which are invaluable, thank you.
This is one of the best videos I’ve watched on RUclips I’ve spent most of today picking up some excellent advice absolutely fantastic mate what was the cost of the build Of the garden room I wish you could come and build me a garden bar in my garden keep up the great videos 👍
Hi Paul - Thanks for the great comment I’m really pleased it was informative. Without the additional cost of the stove/ glue pipes it was around £8k - you could make savings by using treated softwood t&g cladding, second hand upvc patio doors and windows and perhaps doing the electrics if you have those skills. Thanks again - Cheers
Thanks Dave - it’s turned out pretty well and it’s kept me going over the madness of Covid etc. Bit more time to get out on the bike now. Cheers & all the best...Andrew
I’ve really enjoyed following your build and what a great job you’ve done. I plan to build one next year so thank you for filming your project. Once again well done 👍
Very much appreciate that Peter. It’s a great project, you’ll find interesting to do and and be a asset in your garden. All the best with your build and so pleased these videos might help on some way. Cheers...
Hi Aaron, it’s a little while ago now and some prices may have increased. I think about £6k for materials - timber frame, roofing kit, cladding, plasterboard, screws and fixings, insulation, vapour barrier etc..You could save a bit by using used upvc windows and French doors eg off eBay. In the end I hardly use the wood burner as the wall mounted Dimplex heater keeps things warm with the insulation. If you have the space it’s a nice thing to build and spend time in throughout the year. Hope that helps…
Hi - I think it was about 8-9K but I made the window frames myself. Some higher cost items were hiring the Electrician, the Siberian Larch cladding and the doors made by a local carpenter. We use it a lot throughout the year as it’s high up in the garden facing south. One of my more successful projects so far. Thanks for watching and your comment. All the best…
Thanks that’s praise indeed! In terms of cost. With the items you mention subtracted, I would estimate around £6K. Perhaps a bit more...the big ticket items were the doors, timber, insulation and rubber roofing. Also a surprising amount on screws, nails and other consumables. Hope that helps - atb, Andrew
Excellent job and that floor was a nice surprise, was expecting the usual laminate flooring! Been binge watching loads of garden office videos and appreciate all the tips you gave. Start mine in April and have drawn the design (4×2.5) and working out the cost on Excel. What was the biggest surprise in cost?
Vajinder Taak Hi Vajinder - so sorry not to reply sooner, just found your comment. I think the biggest costs were the cladding, oak doors and electrical works. The rubber roof membrane was also more costly than say roofing felt. In addition I was always needing screws and fixings and general products from timber and builders merchants. It all adds up, but I guess the biggest saving was doing the bulk of the work myself, and spreading the cost over a few months seemed less 'painful' from a cost basis. Best wishes with your build...
@@solway17carlisle Thanks for the reply. Yes, I guess no sane person would try and calculate how many screws and nails to use - it's an unknown cost. I have to settle on a design in my head as it keeps changing every time a get a new idea from someone else's build!! Thinking of shadow gaps now! Thanks again!
Hi Ben - that’s a good idea. I’ll see if I can film an update as it’s been a while since I finished it. It’s still dry, warm and no major issues. Thanks for looking at the other videos and your comment. Cheers
