Sept. 26, 2012: We bring you another gem from the International Swimming Hall of Fame for todayapos;s edition of The Morning Swim Show, presenting the early evolution of the butterfly stroke. Those who know their swimming history well will remember that butterfly was begotten from breaststroke when several swimmers began using over-the-water recovery as far back as the 1936 Olympics. Butterfly became its own stroke in the 1950s, and as we see in this video, was ?one of the most difficult strokes? to swim.

Weird how they don't mention that it was developed at the University of Iowa in 1934, thanks to the coach (David Armbruster) who refined the original "butterfly" breaststroke technique. He figured out how to fix the drag it created after one of his swimmers (Jack Sieg) stopped paying attention during instructions and swam with a dolphin kick. They combined the two components and developed the resulting technique further. They then spread their findings with other coaches and schools, eventually leading to its official stroke status.
If I were to swim the 200 breast back in 1936, I would do fly the whole way and nreak the world record by freakin 20 seconds!
Very interesting. I started swimming in 1958 and there were still butterflyers using the frog kick....not too many, since it was slower. Interesting also to see Carl Jastremski and Fred Schmidt, two guys older than me who were at the top when I was in age group. Thanks!
We had a fun week beginning with wearing pajamas on Tuesday as part of Spirit Week and ending on Friday with pep rallies for both Middle and High School students. We appreciate all the school spirit, energy, and enthusiasm during the week.

From a modern perspective it almost hurts to see how obscenely poor their technique was, back then!
