Best two guitar band I've ever seen. I can't believe it's been 20 years, but seeing the two of you together was a true life changer for me. Thanks for everything.
My god! Is Howard Alden a genius, or what??!! I fell in love with Jazz, and Jazz guitar, by listening to Joe Pass, Wes, Ellis, et al, catching Pass and Ellis anytime they made it to the Sf Bay Area. I'd put Howard at the top (well, along with Joe Pass...!) What a pleasure!
yes, he is.....simply no other way to put it. He learned everything he could from every top jazz player, live or dead and put it all together. Chops, ear, theory, imagination, chordal stuff, single note lines, he truly has it all.
What a journey in the endlessly universe of music!.What a chance to meet George Van Eps ,and to share and learn directly from Him. Hope that Van Eps' books and methods are still affordable since they bring the ticket for infinite explorations and discoveries of inexhaustibles treasures .Thanks to Howard Alden,Bucky Pizzarelli for the wondering burning "flame".Guitar duets are a delicate challenge .I hope that someday Howard can play with the young Pasquale Grasso .As we say in France they are built to meet each other !Thanks a lot for this posting and your Jazz Mastery. Thanks for posting. I have the whole show on video as well and another one from the same tour. It was in Bad Saulgau where I heard this "Salute to Eddie Condon" package live. Besides the gentlemen in the clip it featured Ed Polcer on cornet, Bob Havens on trombone, Allan Vaché on clarinet, Johnny Barnes on barisax, Johnny Varro on piano and Polly Podelwell, vocals. Guitarist Jim Douglas played the first part of that tour in North Germany.
In my next life I want to play just like that!! What a great job. I was lucky enough to have Mr. Van Eps make one of his string dampers for me which I keep in the safe deposit box along with a hand written letter from him. What great tone you guys have as well as great chops. RIP Mr. Van Eps. Though we never met , I'll always cherish our phone conversations.
Hi Howard, We had the opportunity to meet at the Dennison Guitar Festival a few years back. It was the first time I heard your playing and you'be been one of my favorites ever since. Thanks for these videos! So great!
Howard, Thanks for posting the videos of George. How exciting it must have been to play with him. I wish I could have seen him live, but never did. I did catch a show you did in Hutchinson with James Moody, Cedar Walton, Peter Washington and a few others. I think it was a Newport Jazz Festival touring group of some sort. Roland
I listen to Hand-Crafted Swing everyday, it's hard for me to find your songs on the internet, let alone buying the original record at the store here in Argentina. Thank you for uploading it. You're my favorite jazz guitar player.
The Benny Goodman classic, played by two of the best, in the company of two of the best. Van Eps and Alden are supremely masterful; Haggart, place in history assured as the composer of that most standard of standards, "What's New?" shows why he was an in-demand bassist for all those years; Butch Miles (not to be confused with drummers Butch Trucks or Buddy Miles) was such an ass-kicking drummer with Basie (during those years he was often referred to as "Buddy Rich, Jr.") that it's refreshing to hear him show such restraint in this small group situation, and, of course, his time is impeccable.
Howard plays sweet and laid-back. What can you say about George that hasn't already been said? Nothing except to repeat that he was one of the 'Giants'.
it's awesome at 1:40 when he uses the tritone sub and the bassist picks up on it, it's allways interesting seeing solo players playing in a band, there's alot less material to work with when you have to stay (relatively) whithin the written chords.
I got to see Howard play last night with our very own Andy Brown here in Chicago. He is so great. Nice to hear him talk about George Van Eps. Two masters of the guitar!
Masters! Young and old, carrying out the jazz guitar tradition as great as anyone imaginable.
Simply maa-havelous! Musicianship that transcends the ordinary without resorting to special effects. Who are these Gods dressed like ordinary men?
damn it i keep finding these musical gems on you tube, i`ll never get to sleep
and I ll never get my day started.....
Brilliant band, thanks for posting! I love the way the bass player reacts to George Van Eps' solo, I think he is pretty surprised with some ideas :)
amazing!!! thanks for posting this!!!

Two giants delivering. What beautiful playing.
I initially watched this only to see Van Eps but now I gotta do some more checking out of Alden's musicality! WOW!!!

Wow, VanEps' chord work is unreal!

It's low A- George used the same, but then the whole guitar down a whole step, so it's a low G for him
Sicuramente il suono piu' bello della chitarra jazz ....
Hitting on 7s.
@seamothboy
Almost all the time-At the time of this video, I was playing exclusivel with a pick-now I play with my fingers some, maybe 25% of the time
TASTY!!!
DT570:iT'S A SHARP 9 CHORD MOVED UP A HALF STEP TWICE.HE PICKED UP ON THE HALF STEP, NOT THE TRITONE.
