Love your channel Scott!! Just creative thinking here.....If I have 3 knobs it would be:
1. Volume
2. EQ rotary switch with 5 presets. The used preset is shown on a small oled display, so you will always know which preset you are using. You can also change the eq presets by software and name them whatever you want.
3. The amount of selected EQ preset is applied.
This will keep my inner geek happy at home by endless possibilities, but will give me simplicity when needed (playing live).

well, I would have Volume, bass, and treble. I believe you can still make it sound great with just those 3.
That's what are on my 1965 Ampeg B-15 N and nobody has ever complained about my tone.
All the other bells and whistles are a waste of time.

Yep I also love them as simple as possible:

- Knob with 5 or more dial options: 1 J Jam. 2 L Gra. 3 J Pas. 3 G Lee. 4 T Wim. 5 P Pal.

Mids are tricky, and different rooms can really mess with the sound. I like having a lot of control over them.
1 Volume (the BIG one!)
2.Variable "scoop" EQ sweeps from "simile to frown" EQ shape (flat in the middle)
3. Passive tone control at the end of the chain like those found on, say, a Precision or Jazz bass.
Probably go for 1. Volume 2. Low-mid 3. Built-in FX EQ (turn the knob to change to another sound). Love the videos, and the courses. Keep up the good work!!
Greetings Scott, I don't generally adjust my knobs unless the room is terrible or my strings are awful which happens sometimes because like most I'm just a poor local musician. That being said really thinking about it I would have to say,
1. Volume (obviously)
2. boost/cut for the next knob
3. frequency or Hz or EQ selector or parametric knob with a fairly narrow Q (whatever anyone wants to call the knob with a thousand names.)

The amp would be half solid state and half tube-preamp which can be overdriven and mixed with dry signal from solid state.
1. Volume.
2. Frequency selection. 40hz-2khz
3. boost/cut. noon would be at unity, turn left to cut, right to boost.
But a placebo knob for nosy-micro-managing-do-gooders might be nice!
1. Volume, 2. Groove (preshape filter to scoop mids)(and have it be able to roll off highs and lows if you turn counter clockwise and add (something like markbass VLE) 3.Compressor
I love simplicity! For me I need:
- Volume
- Compression
- Notch Filter
I can get everything else I need out of the basses I play. My main bass is a Warwick thumb bolt on. My backup is a Raven Wood custom build with Ken Smith pickups, Aguilar electronics and Grover tuners. Many other basses in the shed but these are my go to instruments.
Thanks so much for your channel. I have learned a lifetimes worth of bass techniques to copy and adopt since discovering you about a year ago. If I lived in the UK I am sure we would be mates!

First - Love this video especially the little late night correction you added in there ... that was great to be honest about it. Now, for the other reason for the post -
The 3 knobs for a Bass Amp if I could design it ...
1 - BIG Volume knob - all the way to 11 !!!
2 - A Combo Compressor / Overdrive knob - pull the knob out for the compressor & push it back in for the overdrive !!!
3 - A Combo EQ - pull out for the Bass & push it back down for the Treble / Mid ...
(You just said 3 knobs ... you didn't mention that they could be multi-functional !! LOL)
I'd love to win this amp, I have 4 granddaughters & 2 of them have been bitten by the music bug so far, so they make me get my acoustical bass out to try and show them a few things .. which isn't much since I've been trying to re-learn everything from 35 years ago that I've long forgotten ... but thanks to you and what you've been showing us, it has slowly been making the transition back a little easier when i get to carve out the time to do it. If I do end up winning this contest, next will be getting a P or J body or a Ricky .. all depends on what I can find.

I would like it this way because I could just adjust bass and treble on the bass and then decide where I want the natural tone of the bass to be or how much of it I want. Compression is gonna be a must in any situation!

3. Shelf type tone control of everything below 200 Hz, with little hump on 200 Hz. Instant cut through knob.
But I could live without third knob :).

Just to cut the treble and mids in order to get a nice round and soft sound!

Thus creating a fully adjustable high frequency filter.
I love the simplicity of this amp. 1- Volume, 2-compressor and 3 would be a control that allow to smoothly make a transision between personalized tone presets.

3. Singer volume (for monitoring)
That way wouldn't need to have separate monitoring amps nor keep pestering the sound guy! I'd use an active bass to sort out my EQ ;-)

Most everything else can be messed around with on the bass itself, but to me these are essential to have built in to the amp.

3. Tube SAG (a knob that changes power amp dynamics from Class-D quick to Ampeg B15 pokey)
1. Volumethen for (Semi-)Parametric EQing
2. Frequency (35Hz-5kHz) and Bandwith (with stacked Dualknob - if allowed)

That's all I need because I can handle the EQ on most of basses since they're active. Also have to say I've had experience with the Bergantino amps and cabs and they're amazing. I used an AE212 as my main stage amp for a few years and rarely disappointed. Clean and transparent but could handle overdrive when I kicked it on.

3. Post-power amp Gain (is this a worthless knob if there's no eq section? If so, then I change my answer to Presence)
This is a great question. I've seen stereo amplifiers with the KISS ethos, but not so much with the bass amps.
Control is great and I don't think I'd give it up, but I'd actually love to try an amp with just a volume knob so that the signal from the bass is as unadulterated as possible.
My ears...they're not so keen that I can distinguish between different pickups, woods, etc., so an amp like this could really highlight the characteristics of the guitar itself.

Since I'm investing in nice pedals for doing compression, eq, tuning etc., I really don't need anything more on my amp. Clean, easy, one big know, one input, two switches.
1. Volume control that can go up to 11
2. Octave effect switch
3. Envelope effect switch (maximum funk)
After the volume, My 2 controls would be:
1. Sub bass variable boost
2. Distortion attack
The amp is mega compact (I have an old 1990 peavey mk6 that weighs slightly less than a tour bus!)
The cab is super slim and light but still packs a punch (I’ve got a 1990 4 x 10, takes a professional weightlifter to lift!)
As you can see, I’d love something compact and slim and not backbreaking to shift.
My preferences are the 1st being Volume, 2nd being Treble, and 3rd being Bass. I like having control over the treble but I like it turned up. It sounds better to me.
As a very new bass student I’m enjoying the videos and think that what would help me most at the moment would be:
1. Volume
2. Left hand to right hand coordination expander
3. Left thumb pain suppression filter

I want to thank you for helping me with my sound on my New GK legacy 800 Watt Bass Amp.
I was loosing my mind trying to find my right sound from this amp and GK 210 Cab. I play a Geddy Lee Japan model supped up.
with TOM Branley/Geddy Lee Rewinds Pick ups. brighter sounding and had the frets leveled and recrowned What a difference.
My problem was I had the treble up to high. Like you said you turn yours down and the Mid High Up.
Well I did that, and instantly sounded much better and clearer to. Thanks bass brother for your most informative video. I'am

I've been Singing Solos since I was in Christian School at the age of 9. Im 61 years young. Have played and Sang in bands playing RUSH and much other songs/bands. I'm a Tenor, so the higher range Vocals fit me. But with All the new technology. Since the 1980's, Im constantly learning.Thanks again. P.S. can you do a video on the GK Legacy 880 Watt D Class Amp and GK 210 Cab with the New NEO Speakers.
I love them. Cleaner sounding than my 210 Markbass cab.

I already use a Quilter Bass Block, with 4 knobs, with my Sire V7 5-string: 2 of the knobs are volume and gain. All other EQ is on the bass. That feeds my MarkBass 2x10. Depth, and Contour. I've been playing since '67. I am not the best, but many of the best know me: Alphonso Johnson, Anthony Jackson, Nathan East, Jaco, Jamerson, Montgomery, Victor Bailey, Abraham, Ricky Minor, Tal, etc.
For my three knobs on a bass amp, I guess there would be:
1. Volume
2. Some kind of tone control (low pass or something more clever)
3. Gain or drive.
My first bass amp was a Philco console radio. It had a heavy duty 12" speaker. My best friend's dad was a line man for the local power company. He added a small piece of plywood with a few transistors and an input jack for my bass (a Fender Mustang). It had no control knobs (maybe that means it was permanently set on "10"). I was over the moon to be able to play. So Scott, as to your question--What three knobs?? Heck, I didn't need any knobs to be happy. Since then I have purchased other amps with more knobs, but none made me happier than that first Philco/Lineman Special.

Pedals can handle anything else I might need.

That's a cool concept, I think a really neat setup would be a kind of pseudo parametric eq.
1. Volume.2. Target frequency.3, roll off direction/ intensity. Notched in the middle position. Further left, the more severe the eq curve decreases frequencies as they get farther from target. Further right the more severely the sounds around the target frequency are cut in relation to the notes farthest away.
Seems like a really interesting arrangement that could create some unique sounds.

2) Switch headphone or speakers
3) Switch Input On/Off so I am able to immediately jack the guitar in and out without a big annoying pop and keep the volume as is..
A Mug holder on top would also be nice.....

I, if I had to choose 2 knobs with the volume, those two would be :
- a tone (because it's the simplest way to efficiently change the texture of your sound).
- a compressor (do I really need to explain why).

Since I play an active bass, I guess having only two knobs other than volume to control the amp gives me the opportunity to have a little fun. One of the knobs would be a compression knob, and the second one would be a distortion/octave knob. So when you're in the 12 to 5 area, it would change the distortion on the bass and between 7 and 12 it would change the effect of the octave.
Love Jim Bergantino products, used them for years, almost bought this amp, but budget wasn't there. Three knobs hmmm, 1. Volume 2. Stack Para EQ with 3 low selects and Q on top 3. Stacked Para EQ with 3 high selects and Q on top
a 3 knob amp needs:
input with active/passive switch
compresssion
volume
parametric mids
so its not really 3 knobs but useful
...and john east should build this!

That would be dream to have tbh. I don't like too much controls either. I want to play and not fiddling for hours every time I plug another bass.
Along with the volume knob I d have a knob functioning as a octave switcher and the 3rd knob would be the bass synth, there would of course be supporting software that allows the programming/editing of the bass synth sound.
I think if I could only have 3 knobs, one being volume theyd have to be

- Mid frequency sweep or just a general tone knob
A very simple set-up indeed but things like compression can be handled with a separate compression unit (ive never liked the onboard compressors in amps)
everything else can be handled on the bass itself!

My bass has eq so really having more eq on my amp would be kinda pointless, at least for what I use my bass for. But having both gain and drive knobs on my amp would really give me a good range of sounds for different rock songs, which is the genre i delve the most. Gain and drive are NOT the same, so having both is what I would want.

- a lo-mid+bass knob (i.e. entire low half)

Well, sometimes i like to have a flat EQ, it really depends of what kind of music im playing,: Fusion, rock, etc. I play most metal than anything, also, i really believe that almost all the tone come directly from the fingers.
So, for me it would be:
-Volume
-Low mids: It helps some times to cut through the mix and, in a particular way i manage most of the to have a bassy low end with it.
-Compresor: I need it to have a punchy tone just for the sake of preference or if im playing heavier stuff. It's more versatile for me than treble. I can have a more or less trebly tone with compression without sacrificing the low end.
TL;DR: I don't let the EQ eats me and i pay more attention to my finger's tone than anything hahah
