Discipline is about steering yourself back on track when you start to drift astray. David Goggins is a formula car with a nitrous boost and no steering wheel, screaming in a straight line in whichever direction the car happened to be facing.
agreed, re steering yourself back on track. I totally disagree about Goggins, he's extremely intentional about decision making and he is fully in control. He's made a conscious decision to continue the extreme feats because it's his brand, and he likes being a savage. We can all learn from him wrt to will power AND consciousness...the rest from DG can be a bit of a muddle, meaning procrastination, discipline, etc...he's a story teller, not a wordsmith
I pretty much always listen to podcasts(including yours) while doing something productive. My phone may say I have a lot of screen time per day but 70 to 80% of that time is spent actually doing things. Even something as simple as walking my dog. Good episode Mark!
My first RUclips comment ever goes to Mark Manson and his friend (I’m sorry I don’t recall his name but he is a bad ass as well!) I choose who and what I listen to wisely. Very wisely. Mark Manson has very quickly become one of my most important you tube channels. He ranks up there with Theo Von, Joe Rogan and Ed Mylett in my personal opinion. I’m a 34 yo single male in south Texas. Besides my dad and my preacher, these RUclips guys help me navigate life, hold myself accountable, stay open-minded, humble and kind. Mark Manson is the ultimate older brother to any young man looking to become a better human being. For a guy who wrote a book about not giving a fuck he sure does give a fuck about us. Mark, brotha, thank you so much. I know your best message and most impactful content is still ahead of you!
The intro reminded me about how I always download mark's podcasts to listen to while biking and that combination is something I believe every person should try because it is just, amazing.
This is a very interesting conversation - at the 17:00 mark I would argue that what Goggins does is discipline, contrary to what Mark is saying. I like the distinction between discipline and self discipline, and I like what was said about self discipline being self correction. What's interesting about discipline is that it is militaristic, and Goggins is a military guy, albeit a superior one. The problem with discipline is that it is conformity. The military teaches conformity. I would add that freedom is important in self discipline (back to correction) because as Jiddu Krishnamurti says, discipline is learning (the art of the martial arts, etc.), and we cannot learn without curiosity and the space to be able to learn. That's how I think of self discipline
I used to be a person who worked out until I because a person with a chronic illness. Not blaming myself and thinking I'm lazy has been a challenge, but I'm starting to see the light. I was equating my value with what I got done. Now I have to learn how to value who I am. It's tough!
I liked this episode. Arguments, counterarguments, fresh ideas on the spot, honesty. What I wish if you brought up other examples rather than gym/diet/alcohol/health ones.
This is actually my first time watching an advertisement on this channel, partly because I love coffee, but mostly because Drew's academic-style reading of the coffee ad is both serious and hilarious.
I loved the episode. This question 18:45 is killing me 😅I guess because I'd like to believe that a state without addictions is possible for humans. I don't know if self-discipline is or isn't trading one addiction for a better one but, even if it is, I'd definitely like to believe that there are healthier states of mind where we do good stuff without addiction/compulsion. Maybe trading your addiction for a better one is a phase or a step in the right direction but not the end of the journey?
5 seconds in and; I do the same!!! Usually I have too many podcasts to only do house work. But when I do house work I play a podcast on my airpods so I can walk around and do the thing while listening to a podcast and not have to be in front of a device =P
Love the podcast! Love the discussions! What are both of your takes on “trust?” What are indications of when to distrust? How does this apply to “block chains” and to gaming in relation to international business? Apologies.. a necessary question for the strategy of team building and system building.
Right, I think addiction needs to be addressed in this conversation...Mark uses references to crack and athletics in the same sentence and it's not helpful to conflate things like that. Obsession is one thing, addiction is another (coffee, drugs, yes-sex, and social media, etc.)
I've been saying for time that Goggins 'Discipline' is toxic. Yes it's a good thing to replace a bad habit with a good habit but he discipline is his way of dealing with trauma but it's not actual dealing with it, it's basically putting your head in the sand. I listened to the audiobook so heard his extra bits in that podcast form and he never really acknowledged this. Even him being a terrible partner, basically becoming his father, he never acknowledged how he's 'fixing' it, because he's not, he's just, literally, running away from his problems.
not sure I agree, he faced the trauma. maybe read the other book as well? how has he turned into his father? I also don't see his discipline as toxic, what he is, is obsessed. That's clear, and if you're an adult you're aware of the dangers of obsession
I think the only way to make a true change overnight is when people have a near-death experience. That does profoundly change people at a fundamental level.

God love Goggins, he’s like the “cartoon” version of “discipline”!😂

right, we need to get really clear on what lazy means and what laziness is before we hurl that insult at ourselves

Great episode, as always. Keep it up guys ! 👏🏼

Awesome podcast!
I had that exact same epiphany about podcasts last year and made a similar rule for myself. Works mind-blowingly well! 🙌
After going through a slow process of change in thoughts, in identity, in behaviours, I 100% agree with you, there is no possible overnight change.

Katy Milkman's temptation bundling! Pairing something you want to do (listen to podcasts) with something you need to do (housework).
If you haven’t please have Robert Greene on the podcast! It would be very interesting to see what you guys agree and disagree on.
Absolutely! I would love to have a conversation between Mark and Robert!
Yes!
Thank you. Your books and videos change my life.
Very entertaining in home office ❤

Guys my favorite podcasts are you and drew just chit chatting and laughing 😎
Thanks for sharing. This is very interesting
Had to pause this until I find something productive to do . .

Runner high addiction is real.

Yes will power is over rated for everyday tasks. Motivational things always useless. Thanks this video
Wait, Mark said he drinks coffee for his ADHD, now Drew says he doesn't.
He said he drinks caffeine, not coffee.
@@DrewBirnie-MM Oh, thanks for clarifying!

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not into your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths.
I listen audiobooks in the gym, that is part pf the thing that keep me going to the Gym
First comment, hope you like this comment Mark❤
Waste of time....
