Btw, his gut instinct is right. The Last Dragon was a Motown Records production, which is why the soundtrack has famous Motown artists like Stevie Wonder, DeBarge, and Smokey Robinson on the soundtrack, among other artists 😉
The last guy you'd expect to be an expert on the late 70's NY club scene and early hip hop history. He could teach a class. (Or make a video)
The female lead was named Vanity. She led the Pop/R&B group called Vanity 6 back in the 80’s. They had a big hit with the song “Nasty Girl” written by Prince. Whom she also dated.

There was some Japanese customs in the movie because the main actor studied a martial arts style called Chinese Goju which was a mix of Kung Fu & Karate. Really enjoyed the video, keep up the great work.

Yes Taimak was a student of Ron van Clief who was the founder of Chinese Goju, he combined Kung Fu with Goju Ryu style karate and kickboxing

I just got through your intro, and man... Lee is the friggin' king. Not only is he so chill and easy going, but his historical knowledge is so incredibly deep, spanning thousands of miles. Is history and pop culture something he's really into or something?
Someday you two will have to do a USA tour and experience the various spots where things were born (hip hop, Tea Party, Civil War battlegrounds, etc.).
Haha yeah, Lee is a hip-hop producer, pop culture and history is kinda his thing.

This film is culturally significant to black Americans because blacks like and admire asian culture.
Asians went through a lot of the same types of racism and segregation as blacks. Just not as severe.
*Leroy in the film was always the master and had the glow. He just didn't believe it was himself. Very good observation by him catching the arrow*
Yeah looking back his tang suit (i think that's what he called it?) outfit was in poor taste but when we were younger we thought he looked cool in it.
@@zenbyoI didn't. I was 10. I knew it was part of th plot. He didn't fit in. I also lived in NYC at the time. So I guess I identified with Leroys little brother. His clothes were fresh!
This movie meant a lot to Mexicans too. We didn't have Mexican movie heroes. To see somebody different that wasn't white. Meant a lot to us. Mexican parents used to take us to China town in l.a. to watch movies. 😍

This is legit my favorite movie of all time. It’s a pure classic. Hopefully you guys give it some rewatched in the future because I’ve legit been watching this movie since I was like 3 years old. I’m in my 20’s now. It just has so much charm and love.
I've been watching it since it came out and I'm 47.
Barry Gordon was the producer of the film and just about every Motown song you've heard was overseen by him. He also produced the music.

This is my first time seeing your channel and I am in love with your movie reactions. I came for the reaction but I got a history lesson as well!! I also watched the crouching tiger, hidden dragon movie reaction and I kept watching because of all the history lessons. Omg! Dashed over cause I absolutely adore the Last Dragon! So cool and a fun watch. I love all the characters in it. Introduced me to Ernie Reyes Jr. so a next film recommendation could be Surf Ninjas.
Really wish they did the planned sequel where Leroy takes part in a competition in China where he goes through fighters who also use The Glow. Fancy writing it up myself as fanfic. However I do know there's a further animated series in the works and a sequel on the way that may focus on Sho'nuff.

Little boy is Ernie Reyes Jr, his dad Ernie Reyes was the fight coordinator for this movie (they fight each other). Asian cultures all mixed up, like most Americans but they did try, missed a lot ( Lots of Japanese culture in Kung Fu movie). Classic 80's, comedy, action, mixed with music and styles back then.
"No Retreat No Surrender" Is a good Bruce Lee tribute movie also...
This is my favorite movie of all time. When I am on my deathbed, it'll be my last request, to watch this movie. Nothing better than this.

I was 13 when this came out. Me and my friends saw this like 5 times in the movie theater in Brooklyn where I grew up.
So cool to watch people watch my favorite movie for the first time. A dialogue from an eastern perspective was very interesting.😎

Great reaction. I remember this when i was a kid and i own a copy of this movie to this day. It was the great blend of 80s corny comedy, action, and fantasy, and music of the times. It's not really serious. And who doesn't want to be a martial arts master and be able to glow. I would just walk around glowing. I'd be buying groceries just glowing as i pick up lettuce. At the mall? I'd be just glowing.
This movie was one of the best things to come out of the 80s. Bruce Leroy was the shvitz.

This is a Barry Gordy's movie. It is a cult classic in the black community. It was meant to be a light hearted fun movie. Thank you guys for watching it.

When Lee played Kato in The Green Hornet series, he was asked to slow down his punches and kicks, because his movements were so fast that the camera wasn't able to capture them on film.

Fun Fact Sho'Nuff kind of foreshadowed Leroy's ability to "catch bullets with his teeth" in the movie theater. This movie was one of my Favorites growing up and watched it so many times! Appreciate the Translations too!
Haha it's interesting that English and Cantonese both have a word for that, I've never heard of such thing in Mandarin though.

I agree with Lee, the bullet caught with his teeth is a little much! hahaha But the over-the-top elements were definitely standard for many similar movies of the time period. I'll echo what many others have said here in the comments, super impressed with Lee's prodigious knowledge of American pop culture - spanning many decades! Very impressive!

The Last Dragon is marketed towards children (preteens and teens). It is why children were in the film and the villains barely hit people.

I know this is late, and I don't if anyone mentioned this or something like it, but when my dad showed me this as a kid, I thought this was supposed to be a black parody of a Bruce Lee movie, hence the name being "Bruce Lee"-roy.
As Black kid growing up in Louisiana, my dad and I have always enjoyed Chinese Kung Fu movies and this video made me watching this with him, so I'm going to like and watch more of your videos! You guys and Accented Cinema are very informational!

Cool story that beef between Sammo and Bruce. Sammo is such a talented martial artist and comical actor. His movies are hilarious. Precisely my favourite is "Enter the fat dragon" where he made a parody/tribute to Bruce and its really funny.

This movie is good because the filmmakers leaned into the cheese. The acting is bad, the plot is pedestrian, the costuming is...off, but the film is self aware, so it doubles down on the ridiculousness to make a really fun movie.
I wonder if the mix-up between Chinese and Japanese culture was deliberate. It could be that the filmmakers knew the difference, but they wanted to show how a receiving culture understands the borrowed culture and gives insight into what the receiving thinks is most important or interesting. My favorite case of cultural exchange with China is the opening of the American-style "Chinese" food restaurant in Shanghai a few years ago. It was started by a couple of Americans working or studying (I can't remember which) and found that they missed the "Chinese food" that they had back home, so they decided to open a restaurant to serve authentic American Chinese food in China. It was called The Fortune Cookie. I wonder if it is still around.

In places like Harlem in the 70s and early 80s.. Chinese martial arts movies, specifically Bruce Lee.. were a HUGE deal to black audiences. So popular youd see young black guys either dressing like Bruce or dressing in chinese style clothes. At the time, Hollywood movies weren't being made for or representing black audiences.. they were mostly made with white actors.. but Chinese kung fu presented these characters that weren't white but they were heroic and strong and the movies were just cool.. so that generation really loved them.. that's why the rap group Wu Tang Clan was all about kung fu movies. In the 70s, theaters that shows kung fu movies in the US, the audiences would go INSANE... not quite like this movie, but more like going to a wrestling match... people really got into it and loved them. This movie is like a love letter to that era

@beaujac311 And what happened to that store owner? She was prosecuted and convicted, and the Koreans in LA didn't riot over it. They didn't protest outside the courthouse trying to intimidate jurors. They didn't claim that the store owner was being treated unfairly. They acted like normal citizens rather than entitled prices with chips on their shoulders, supporting criminals simply because of shared race. Meanwhile, even though Harlin's family received justice through the criminal justice system, the rioters still used it as an excuse for their criminal behavior.

She was convicted of manslaughter which usually carries a 16 year sentence in prison but the judge commuted it to probation and a $500 fine. When Bruce Lee first moved to the USA he was famous for his hands and arms as he studied Wing Chun. His kicks he developed later when he worked with some Karate people. And you MUST teach your boyfriend Hopscotch! 🤣🤣

The Japanese outfit has something to do with the main villain calling himself the Shogun of Harlem, which also sounds a lot like the "sho' nuff" chant that his minions repeat. Japanese culture was very popular in the 80s due to Japan's rising economic clout. Also the main character's name is a play on "Bruce Lee", "Bruce LeeRoy".
Got to give it to this dude for his knowledge of 80's trivia.

You know I have heard about a youtuber named daetrix is making a show called the rise of the last dragon animated series based on the last dragon movie 🎬
It's not that we don't understand the differences it's that in America when a person goes through martial arts training they begin with the Japanese styles then move to the Chinese and so on and so fourth.
