Straight up, the Z1 Model is an up sale trap. If you can afford $600USD odds are good you can probably afford to wait a bit and buy the Z1E Model. You're going to be sorely tempted to do this, or at least this is the hope of Asus. But there's a problem for Asus. The Z1 chip, by Asus's own admission from months ago, stated that the Z1 chip trades blows with the Steam Deck, which, if true, kind of removes the Ally's biggest advantage over the Steam Deck. So in this situation a potential Ally customer could be either up saled to the Z1E Model or down saled to one of the cheaper option Steam Decks and away from Asus. It really comes down to the mindset of the customer. If they can easily afford another hundred bucks they'll probably be up saled to the Z1E Model, but then again, if they could easily afford the Z1E model, then they probably were never even remotely considering the Z1 Model to begin with. If on the other hand you can't afford anything more than $600USD, then even if the Z1 Model is more consistently better in performance, it's still going to be closer in performance to the Steam Deck than the Z1E Model, thus the Steam Deck is going to be that much more competitive against the Z1 Model than the Z1E Model.

One cool thing about that ROG Ally is that it is reportedly the first consumer product to use Zen 4c cores. The AMD Z1 has 2 Zen 4 cores + 4 Zen 4c cores (which AMD hardly ever mentions). That might explain CPU benchmark differences because the 4c cores are pretty much as fast as the bigger cores (unlike Intel's E-cores), but more efficient and generating less heat. So I guess the 4c cores are just giving the Z1 a huge efficiency advantage.
@@acwbit2368 It would be cool if ETA could confirm this. It differs from AMD's Ryzen 7040U series (Phoenix) with the PHX-A1 stepping. The Ryzen Z1 has been rumored to be a clone of the Ryzen 5 7540U for a long time now." Lineup should have been 6 core 12 CU Z1, 8 core 16 CU Z1 Extreme. For the current state of performance and pricing, there's no reason for this to exist.
They should have just made it a 720p 120hz screen and took out the RGB amd make it around $450. At this rate I'd recommend a low tier steam deck to friends and mod it if they want to save money since this is 30% less in performance than the steam deck and costs roughly $200 more. IDR the steam deck price cuts but ATM its get the steam deck or get the Z1 Extreme.
Could just be me, but at 4:37, your 15Watt TDP test doesn't look right. The Ryzen Z1 power plan says Turbo, which might explain the slightly higher score compared to the Z1 Extreme.

Nothing here is surprising in terms of the cpu performance. Usually the AMD 6 core chips work better in the mobile scenario. So you have less heat and higher clocks at the same wattage... The extreme cut down of the iGPU cores is the only reason the 8 core chip is decent. If they made a 6c version with 12 RDNA3 cores; it would be the fastest chip overall.
I don't know what is the purpose of a 120 hz screen on an igpu handheld. I think to lower the budget they can really save a 50$ on a 60 hz one . You can say that lol or cs needs more frame but without a mouse i don't think it's competitive.
That price is still a bit too high imo, if this was priced same or just slightly above the starter 64gb Steam deck ($399-$450), then i would say its pretty good
Best Buy lowered the price even more to $450. Great price though I see open box z1 extremes for $499... Might switch mine out, but I dont play triple A titles when im out, just emulations and older games.
@derrickdavis862 I just grabbed one of the Z1's yesterday and it's going to be delivered tomorrow. Would have went for the extreme but I honestly just wanna use it for indies and emulation on the go.
Were both devices on the same driver version? If the Z1 has a newer driver, I'd be curious if that might mean driver optimizations are incoming for the extreme.
Is it possible that this was supposed to come out at the same time as the Z1 extreme to give customers a slightly cheaper variant? But something happened in production that delayed it?
@@ghostsauce3109 Because it's using a different die all together. Those 6 cores aren't all the same. This APU uses a combination of Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores.
Z1 non extreme open box from best buy is under 400 and xg mobile 4090 open box under 1900. Combination will give you 4k 60+ on modern triple A ganes at lowest cost per watt and easy to do if you aren't into building a pc. This will replace a dedktop and be better than dedktop 4070 and comparable if not a little behind a desktop 4080. The key is ease of configuring the set up and low power draw.
You might also be lucky with that Z1 chip with both so high CPU benchmark scores and it does also do 300 MHz higher for the GPU. It will be interesting to see if others have similar results.
The distance to the Steam Deck wasn't that drastic for the Z1 extreme in many games. So this is a no-go IMHO. If you want to save money and get a great machine, you'll chose the 64gb Steam Deck at 377 EURs right now. If you want more and money is a non-issue for you, you get one of the Ayaneo devices, because they are simply better. For me the ROG ally sits in the uncomfortable middle ground. For some that's the "best bang for the buck", but to me it's neither cheap enough to be an easy buy, nor powerful/high quality enough to be that premium option. I'd still chose the Steam Deck for its console like experience and ease of use.

Quoting Tom's Hardware: "HWiNFO, a system information, monitoring, and diagnostics utility, confirms that the Ryzen Z1, codenamed Phoenix 2, is on the PHX2-A0 stepping. It differs from AMD's Ryzen 7040U series (Phoenix) with the PHX-A1 stepping. The Ryzen Z1 has been rumored to be a clone of the Ryzen 5 7540U for a long time now." Phoenix 2 is known for being 2 Zen 4 cores + 4 Zen 4c cores.
@@acwbit2368 lots of sources online quick Google search comes up with multiple hits
@@acwbit2368I belive this came from a Moores Law is Dead leak. He mentioned in a recent video how this model uses zen4c. No other proof though
dont think you know what you are talking about
So is it worth it now at 399.99? I’m thinking on pulling the plug. I want it more so older games and switch titles . On the fence lol
I got my z1 extreme open box for $503. I also saw a non extreme for $303. I recommend trying to find an open box deal similar to these.
Z1E is nearly the same as 7840u. However Z1 gpu has only 4CU which is only half as 7640u 8CU, it is totally a joke.
Your highly uneducated z1 is a is hybrid CPU 2 zen 4 cores and 4 zen 4c cores with smt
@@chriswright8074 you better learn the difference between zen4 and rnda3, don’t mix them up together. You can check the details about Z1E, Z1, 7840u and 7640u in AMD official website.
Its priced at 399 currently June 2024. How it shouldve been priced at releasd
even Z1 extreme cant handle that 1080p 120hz :) this version and price is just funny !
Bought the Extreme for $450, local Best Buy is having a sale.
I value performance over looks, if they cut down on that area a lot more and make this more affordable, this wouldnt be so pointless.
Where's the Pocket Air emulation showcase? :(
Lineup should have been 6 core 12 CU Z1, 8 core 16 CU Z1 Extreme. For the current state of performance and pricing, there's no reason for this to exist.
Its around $300 on best buy open box, not bad
I recently got the extreme model for $601 open box. Best of both worlds lol
It’s got someone else’s booger stuck inside somewhere
@@ImUrZaddy Bonus!
do you mind sharing where you can get the desktop backgrounds you're using? they look awesome.
I got the Z1 version open box for 329 us at Best Buy… is it worth it at all?
how is it? do you like it?
They should have just made it a 720p 120hz screen and took out the RGB amd make it around $450. At this rate I'd recommend a low tier steam deck to friends and mod it if they want to save money since this is 30% less in performance than the steam deck and costs roughly $200 more. IDR the steam deck price cuts but ATM its get the steam deck or get the Z1 Extreme.
Surprised they are even bothering releasing this especially after the Legion Handheld Unit
Could just be me, but at 4:37, your 15Watt TDP test doesn't look right. The Ryzen Z1 power plan says Turbo, which might explain the slightly higher score compared to the Z1 Extreme.
FPS & Power Chart Comparison between these two please..
On first version all micro sd card reader burning 🔥 let’s see if they fixed…
If they put a 720p or 900p screen on this with a 60hz panel this will actually be amazing at like a $399 price Range
900p doesnt translate well on 16:9
Thing is….vrr 120hz screens are cheap. I dont know why they cant just make this device cost $450 instead.
Don’t have a problem with it at all 1080p
I ordered the z1 last night for $400. The one thing I’m most worried about is, will it be able to run monster hunter wilds next year? If that’s the case I’m completely happy with the purchase, if not I may take it back
I think this is the best value, especially since they got these things going in the low 300 range now.
Best Buy open box on the extreme is also similar price
Best Buy has had this on sale a lot for $399!!! You think it’s worth it at that price?
You can change Vram from armoury crate itself since a couple months ago. No need to get into bios.
So it's basically old Vega Graphics performance, but better battery life?
way better then vega and it has frame generation
SD Card reader any more shielded?
I prefer the Steam Deck over the Z1. Better pricing. For more $$$ just get the extreme, no point in the downgraded model
I don't know what is the purpose of a 120 hz screen on an igpu handheld.
I think to lower the budget they can really save a 50$ on a 60 hz one .
You can say that lol or cs needs more frame but without a mouse i don't think it's competitive.
That price is still a bit too high imo, if this was priced same or just slightly above the starter 64gb Steam deck ($399-$450), then i would say its pretty good
It’s not expensive you’re just poor
I think $500 is fine. $400 is too low especially since it still has a 512gb SSD
@@itzdcxthey didn't say expensive, they said too high
They can't because they don't have a store lmao deck looses money on every sold deck and get it back from steam
Looking forward to the emulation video. 💯
Do u have a video on the Lenovo Legion Go?
It’s 399 now a TV Best Buy which makes it a pretty good sell
Do the emulation video of this model please!
The Z1 already dropped 100€. So, Z1 Extreme: 799€ retail Pricing and Z1: 599. So that‘s a good price for this.
@@PeculiarVisitorIt’s perfect for emulation. I’m running the YUZU switch emulator at full speed at 25 watts. I think it’s honestly more than enough.
@@derrickdavis862 Can it run PS3 and PS4 games?
Were both devices on the same driver version? If the Z1 has a newer driver, I'd be curious if that might mean driver optimizations are incoming for the extreme.
I own the lower version z1. I got mine open box new for 340 bucks. Great value for low intensity retro games. This has been a great travel buddy.
same - does a better job than my Steam Deck AND has eGPU support
It play snes playstation 1 and 2 and dreamcast N64 and Sega Saturn and the Original Xbox and Nintendo game cube. Mame especially if it possible
Is it possible that this was supposed to come out at the same time as the Z1 extreme to give customers a slightly cheaper variant? But something happened in production that delayed it?
any word on the sd card heat issues ??
Is this z1 non extreme better than the steam deck?
Not gonna lie, all those steam deck fan boys right about this😂
And yet even this one still out performs the deck😂😂
I have the extreme
This has to be some sort of marketing scheme to get more people to get the z1 extreme
How does the Z1 (which is based on the 7640) compare to the 6800u? That big TJD handheld looks interesting which uses the 7640U at the base model.
Its not based on 76 it has 😂half the cus
The tjd would destroy this in performance
The 7640 is much closer to the 7840 than this chip is to the z1 extreme.
@@geforce5591 ofc lol 76 only has few less cus 😂 this has more than a few missing
@@ghostsauce3109 Because it's using a different die all together. Those 6 cores aren't all the same. This APU uses a combination of Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores.
Did they fix the SD card reader with this version?
Not sure, but I really doubt it. Asus would have to do a complete re-design of the device, since the card reader was placed very close to the hotspot
I missed a direct fps comparison with the extreme. something like, this extreme is X% more expensive and the fps is X% higher at average.
the z1 is currently $400 and the z1 extreme $600
what should I do? o.o
The Z1 is garbage 4 CU's out of 12?
You might also be lucky with that Z1 chip with both so high CPU benchmark scores and it does also do 300 MHz higher for the GPU. It will be interesting to see if others have similar results.
I got this version, no complaints since i mostly play last gen games like skyrim/borderlands
Think it will run Wow?
The distance to the Steam Deck wasn't that drastic for the Z1 extreme in many games. So this is a no-go IMHO. If you want to save money and get a great machine, you'll chose the 64gb Steam Deck at 377 EURs right now. If you want more and money is a non-issue for you, you get one of the Ayaneo devices, because they are simply better. For me the ROG ally sits in the uncomfortable middle ground. For some that's the "best bang for the buck", but to me it's neither cheap enough to be an easy buy, nor powerful/high quality enough to be that premium option. I'd still chose the Steam Deck for its console like experience and ease of use.
would not touch any of those expensive go fund me devices - lack of support, lack of drivers etc etc. id only touch handhelds from lenovo, nintendo, valve or Asus at this point. not to mention they bring out a new one like 3 times a week lol
@@Futura2500 Asus hasn't really delivered in terms of software either though. Let's see if Lenovo does better. Right now... only Valve and Nintendo really care about the user experience enough.
@@Futura2500 As somebody that's bought over 1800 Lenovo X1 and X12's - (corporate IT manager) and have handled over a dozen myself personally. All i can say is if the warranty handling, service and long delivery times plus and the complete lack of anything in the BIOS of these "professional laptops" is any indication ? Stay the heck away from Lenovo.
bravo you made my day..... this is the sam as rally cars if you want more power its not enough toput in a stronger motor but you hve to remade the whole car....
So is the z1 a completely different chip or just a locked extreme that didnt yield well?
Z1 2 less cores than the extreme
@@hls30000 yea but they coulda just parked them off a faulty z1 extreme. Amd re-purpose's poor yielding chips often. I speculate these are just asus' way of dumping stock while also creating a want for the extreme upgrade by pricing them so close.
@@lexisnothereIt's a COMPLETELY different chip. The Z1 Extreme uses Phoneix which is 8 cores 16 threads and 12 rdna 3 CU's.
However, the base model uses Z1, and that uses Phoneix 2. The specs are 2 zen 4 cores, 4 zen 4c cores, and that's how they get their misleading 6 cores and 12 threads. Which is true, but not all 6 cores are the same, like they are with the normal Phoneix die (Z1 Extreme).
The other difference is that Z1 (Phoneix 2) caps out at 4 rdna 3 CU's so that lower end Rog Ally Z1 handheld is actually a full die product.
What are your thoughts on using this device for PlayStation remote play?
Did they change the SD card placement? Having it sit over the hottest part of the machine in the launch model was just insanity.
the support said, don’t use sd card and you wont face such issues.
Do you know when this one is available to pick up or order? Thanks.
What do you use for your windows wallpapers?
Z1 is perfect for 720p gaming
