How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RUclips channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Wow, that windrower looks so small and lightweight compared to the newer ones.
I thought the same thing at first view, it looks like a much simpler machine.
I grew up out in the Othello Washington area of the State. A Man
named Pet Tagarres grew 100's of acres of mint. He weeded the mint with thousands of white geese.
Wow that’s a big mint field. I always wondered about who grows this product. I use a lot of mint daily and thought the plant was low to the ground like in a garden. Thanks for taking the time to put this out. Love that JD tractor too.
They do some mint in the Janesville area. The liquid mint is very strong do not put it in your mouth as it will take your breath away.
Roland Hemmann yes over by the airport, that Farmer is a huge all natural farmer, they own some land in Evansville and spread chicken manure in the field 2-3 times a year

I grew up in portage with mint fields right down the road when it was spearmint time it was heaven .
Loved the mint farms near where I was grew up, mouth watering aroma. Almost overpowered the feed lot south of us occasionally!

Can't wait to see how they still the mint! I remember there was an old mint still on the farm where I grew up. Never saw it being used. Remember it being torn down. I grew up about 40 miles north of North Judson!

There are mint fields near my home in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. I have always loved passing the fields with my windows down when they are at their most fragrant. Such a fresh smell.
Do you think they need air fresheners in their cabs?
Nope, we are peppermint and spearmint growers in central Washington and you can sit in that cab and smell mint anytime of the year
No need for air freshener. The cab is in mint condition

I used to live just north east from that town and each time mint trucks would go by it made the air smell so good
I hate the smell and taste of peppermint, but love the taste and smell of spearmint. If that field was full of spearmint, I would be in heaven on harvest day.
Mint raised in Rock County around Janesvile Wisc.l There is a mint distilery on county rd J south of Janesvile.
Gotta be heaven scent in the field.

The mint oil goes pretty far really, only takes a few drops of oil to flavor up a tube of tooth paste
It takes about 3 drops of mint oil for a mint shake as well.
I live close to north Judson. We play them in sports all the time.
Mint grows along the roadside of one my brother-in-law's fields in northern Indiana... every fall when we're in that field I pick a few mint leaves and put them in my pocket... keeps me MINTY fresh all day!! LOL:) Stuff tastes like crap until it's processed, but the smell IS wonderful!!! Later! OL J R :)
Several questions that you might answer as you continue, is it a perennial or biennial crop such as alfalfa? What are water needs of it? Length of growing time? Do they use landscape fabric? Just a few things that came to mind while watching. Thank you for this.
Did you notice all the man made ditches ? That whole corner of the state was swamp land 200 yrs ago. the army corps of engineers opened up all that land. some of the best soil in the world.. hope you checked out Kerstings museum while you was in the area...

Well the things you never think of! I had no idea mint was grown in such quantities. (Never thought about it much though) look forward too the next one.
I remember when my grandad was growing mint. I was about 5 or 6 and he handed me a mint leaf and said "it just like the gum."
It did not taste like gum it was horrible.

I have work for mint farmer before up in that area there used to be a lot of mint farmers but since the prices have gone down they’ve gotten out of it

I was surprised how little of the plant is left after cutting, with it looking mostly like just soil beside the windrow.
I thought that was the same as my windrower...but mines a 2320
How do they rid of the taller large-leafed stuff that was also growing in the field and got mowed?
Doesn't matter mint is so overwhelming that anything in the extraction process is over powered
Looked like a few weeds were harmed in the minty mowing...haha
Probably mint that had seeded.
The extraction process likely makes any weeds irrelevent.

I'm curious if they will say how much mint I'll is worth now❓ Back in the day here in Oregon, the big customers of the oil like Wrigley's Gum, used to send they're buyers out. Always had lots of gum to give away. The highest price I can recall was $20 a pound‼️ This was in the late seventies. This made a barrel of mint oil (400lbs.) worth eight thousand dollars‼️ In Oregon mint was usually cut in the first part of August as the subs heat really brought the oil up into the plant or as you said the leaves. Thanks for sharing‼️👍

That John Deere 3430 has real different look. Are you familiar with it and can you tell us its primary intended uses.
Is the very tall stuff a weed? It almost looks like pig weed. Great video Ryan!
Yeah there was some pigweed or palmer amaranth in it plus what looked like some horseweed (giant ragweed) in a couple places. Don't know what herbicides are labeled for mint production (if any). Later! OL J R :)

You can see the water standing in fields and the drowned out spots in the corn, I don't agree with the usda yield numbers
You can see the replant too, look at the difference in crop stage, row directions, and color due to different varieties...
USDA numbers are the worst thing to ever happen to the American farmer... OL J R :)

How do you weed out the weeds :D What if you get plants that are poisonous or itchy or etc not good for humans, it'd get extracted with the mint oil, what are the safeguards?
Question for you... I don't know if you own that swather, but is there supposed to be a pin on each side at the end of the lift arms connecting to the header? I just bought a 2420 and the arms are just sitting in a cradle on the bottom of the header and I'd like to see it more secure than that. I can't find a pin in the parts book, so I'm thinking there isn't one.
I used to have family in that area and I remember the soil in the mint fields looking very, very dark. A uncle gave me a small bottle of mint oil, and I once used some in making a rice dish. Not knowing anything about it I added maybe a tablespoon to the rice and the whole house smelled like mint for a week! And the rice was so strong no one could eat it. How did mint end up being crop in that part of the country, the soil?
Took longer than I care to admit to realize that the tractor was going backwards and was not just a funky cool designed tractor with the engine in the back....
It's a windrower not a tractor... it's going forwards. Uses two drive tires in the front right behind the header with gear reduction hydrostatic motors turning the wheels, and differential steering by speeding one motor up and slowing the other down. The rear wheels are just casters that point any way they're dragged, like the front wheels on a zero turn mower... no steering gear to work them. The header on front is a sicklebar cutter with a reel to pull the crop in and move it into the cross auger that sweeps it to the center opening to make the windrow. Later! OL J R :)

You might say that, that's Mint! Green mower mowing mint good idea! If mint is like a weed does he have to replant? How does he deal with weeds? Where are the seeds?
Weeds are tough and hard to control if they get out of hand, herbicide use is fairly limited, the best approach is to try to start clean and keep it clean. I’m not positive but I believe almost if not all of the spraying is done in the early spring
Worked four years in the Mint, Peppermint and Spearmint. Ran the Still for the process of the oil.

can you give more info on the time it took when it planted and to harvest it I am in a cold climate would it gown here if it does dry out can it be feed to cattle or can it be used as bedding afterwards

I'm also a pharmacist. We use peppermint oil in compounding fairly often.
@@MatthewHoag77 Cool. I used to do more compounding in the past, but the techs do most of it now. If it's blending a couple topicals together, they do an okay job. Anything more than that I will do. What compound(s) do you use the peppermint oil in?
