    “Criminals” that do drugs should have therapy, not jail time. There isn’t any benefit usually.

      I mean, both maybe? Idk, I've been in psych ward and a lot of these people get to sent there by court's admission. They might be in the same ward as people that came voluntarily, but have lesser privileges - voluntary people can earn their privileges to go outside at certain times or go outside as a group when the staff takes you, but court-mandated people can't, or can in some cases with staff but never by themselves and so on. I mean of course if you murder someone on drugs then you would not be sent there with others.

      Hxnnybee I think it depends on the nature of the offense, as well as the frequency of past offenses, if prior drug court and mandated drug recovery programs were successful, the amount of drugs found on the person being arrested, as well as if the offense also endangered the lives of others. For one example, in my opinion, drug dealing or drug trafficking should 100% be an offense that receives jail/prison time, because it’s not just their own life they are endangering. Additionally, there needs to be better and more widely available addiction programs for inmates, as clearly what is in place currently is not sufficient. At the end of the day, an addict is only going to change if they want to. It doesn’t matter what programs they are forced into if they have no intention of giving up their addiction. The unfortunate part of forgoing a jail/prison sentence for all drug crimes and replacing it with mandated treatment programs instead, is that the majority of those addicts who have received a drug charge are not in the mindset of genuinely wanting to change, and forcing them into these programs takes away time and resources for the people who ARE genuinely there to get clean. I don’t think forgoing jail/prison for drug charges altogether is necessarily the answer, but perhaps instead there needs to be an overhaul of the current broken system in place, and replace it with a program where inmates who fit the necessary criteria could be sent to a specialized prison unit that ONLY houses inmates with drug offenses and addictions, and offers intensive addiction treatment and recovery for the entire duration of their sentence. Unfortunately I don’t think this can be treated as a black and white issue, I think there is much more of a grey area when it comes to whether or not a jail/prison sentence is the answer to people dealing with a drug addiction. The only thing I know for certain is that the current state/atmosphere of jail/prison, along with what is currently being done/not done, is not working for the majority of addicts currently behind bars. A complete overhaul and starting from ground zero is the only way I see true change taking place, but sadly I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

    When my friend's aunt went to prison repeatedly, there was 1 way she got items.
    She was really good at makeup, hair and basically anything beauty and was super inventive when it came to using what was around her, so she became known as the prison makeup artist. If you had a court date or visit, you would go to her. She also taught all the new girls how to do simple makeup. In exchange she was given items that can be bought in the prison since she didn't get outside money. Like you'd go to her and say 'Hey my brother is visiting me, can you do my makeup?' and she'd say something like 'If you can buy me a bag of MnMs on Friday'
    She showed me how she used to do makeup and stuff behind bars and here's the list (by the way she was minimum security, nonviolent offence)
    -Coloured pencils softened in water for eyeliner and brows
    -Eyeshadow palletes and mascara that some people would give her for doing their makeup
    -Crushed up pink eyeshadow mixed into melted lip balm to make a lip and cheek tint
    -Some carmex her rich prison best friend would give her
    -Baby powder to make eyeshadow colours more pastel and also just to powder the face
    -She put broken comb pieces into piercings
    -She used vaseline to tame flyaway hair
    -Temporary tattoos with soft coloured pencil and ink
    -Toothpaste was used to plump lips

    Decades ago, one of my wife's girlfriends hooked up with a dude that had just got out the joint, and he was scary as hell to me, and when I first met him he was still in that prison mode, but after a while he relaxed, and was a very interesting person. This guy was amazingly smart, and could read a situation and see an answer quickly, he could have done anything if he had stayed out of trouble. He made me realize that I wanted no part of that life. He finally got straightened out, got married, had kids, then I lost track of him. Hope he went on to have a good life.

    I’m sure you get messages like this all the time but I really admire your strength sharing your stories on the internet. It feels like the general public really does not understand that people in prison are actual people. And while they’re serving time for a mistake they made, the world has forgotten that people deserve basic human necessities like toilet paper, tampons, medical care, etc. I just love that you’ve put a face to the name and have made these stories more accessible to the public because it’s really changed my outlook on prison reform and I’m passionate about sharing that with others because of your videos and personal accounts. Thank you for that, from me, someone who’s never been to jail, but I’m also sure the people you’re speaking on behalf of really appreciate and respect your honest videos. Major respect for you. ❤️

    1:45pm in Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 just finished homeschooling for the week. Now chilling with a coffee while the kids are outside playing on the trampoline. My Dad said when he was in prison that if it was someone's birthday on the wing a local bakery would donate cakes to the prisoners. The bakery would also donate unsold cakes, pancakes, croissants, biscuits (cookies to you guys in the US) and bread that hadn't sold that day. My Dad worked in the kitchen so he would get first pick of the cakes and keep the good ones to himself or sell them on. He was a heroin addict he would go into prison thin and come out fat because he was eating properly and on methadone. Unfortunately heroin claimed his life 10 years ago, so Jessica thank you for getting clean, turning your life around for your daughter's and not having them witness addiction through their lives. Because seeing your parent kill themselves with drugs isn't good. I worked with a drugs counsellor when my Dad first passed away, it was to deliver speeches to other young people who's parents had died of a drug overdose. Unfortunately in Scotland heroin is rife here but for those who want to get clean our healthcare is free so methadone, suboxone is give out regularly by your local GP (General Practitioners/Dr). Keep up the good work Jess, hopefully you're doing fine with the lockdown and homeschooling😀

    same with doing laundry and having showers etc. you can do it whenever you want, but patient's do have certain wash days that they follow.
    We also have groups for patients, so yoga, exercise classes, perimeter walks, bicycle group, cooking group, relaxation, Movie group once a week, newspaper readings and art and music groups.
    I really hope prisons start to incorporate these more because all my patients talk about how much better it is compared to prison but to me it's still barely the bare minimum we should be providing to help with rehabilitation

    I found your channel after stumbling on your video about how to charge a phone with batteries! I haven’t been able to stop watching the rest of your videos on prison life. As an aussie with an upcoming court case who is facing the possibility of incarceration your videos have put me at ease with your ideas on how to stay sane, I love the thread hustling idea and I found your opinions on those serving life very enlightening. It’s reassuring to hear that other people have been in situations where there was nobody to help them out at the time you needed them too, you can feel pretty isolated in that kind of situation and hearing someone relate is nice

    With the tampon thing I’ve wondered how prevalent TSS is in prison? Is it something you saw often? Since you’re having to make your own and some women probably don’t change them often, since it’s such a limited amount of pads you get.

    • @PM-ht9uc
      @PM-ht9uc 4 года назад +4

      I've wondered about that too

    • @vanessaf7259
      @vanessaf7259 4 года назад +23

      TSS is extremely rare. There are less than 10 cases per 100,000 people and the incidence of TSS caused by tampon use is only 1 in 100,000. The 1979 epidemic of TSS was also caused by tampons that were chemically treated in order to be highly absorbent. Hopefully, since materials used for homemade tampons aren’t really intended for that purpose, they’ll start leaking long before Staph bacteria can start growing.

      TSS is so hyped up in the US rn bc of horror stories from the 70s (but the reason for the outbreak of TSS back then were chemicals in the tampons that are forbidden nowadays). Nowadays it's more likely to get hit by lightning than getting TSS

      You would put in a request to see the doctor, discuss it with him/her, and they would take it out or make arrangements to have you shipped out to have it removed. I don’t know if it’s healthy to leave them in. But if you did, you would just take care of it when you get out.

    Just a heads up girly -- "The Wash Room" question is from a girl that's most likely Canadian. By asking that, she means the bathroom specifically a sink and toilet. So depending on your blocks set up, if your in cells then you have a toilet and a sink for you and your celly. So yeah the answer to her Q: is literally WHENEVER you may need to use it, it's in your little concrete apartment made of solid steel 😏 Now if your in an open bunk concept like common area dorm type of cell block, then you also can go whenever you want except for little time frames like during count or sometimes if someones being moved they will have you "lock" in to your particular bunk so everyone is under control and at their spot, or after any sort of fight either in your block or one near by can even cause you to "lock in" and you may not be able to get up to use the bathroom at this time (if on a Cell Block, lock ins can last DAYS and your toilet is where you wash you clothes so you & your celly don't get rankkk w No Fresh air coming in. Always remember to flush as soon as that little turtle head makes a break for it BEFORE it hits the water so it's seemless (nothing but net 😂) and continue with all bodily fluids excretions to a degree of flushing every couple of seconds, that room is TIGHT & HOME to 2 already angry guys, no need for your body's toxins to linger. I've seen people get hands on over this sorta shit. Being clean is your NUMBER ONE PRIORITY as equally important as staying SAFE. 👍👌

    Hi Jessica, I’ve learned a lot from your story & so glad you’re clean & healthy now!
    If you make a part 2 or make a video, I have some questions!
    1. When your girls get older, how will you explain your full story to them & how do you think they will react?
    2. When you told your daughter already, how did she react?
    3. Do you think if you grew up in a different city or had different friends that you would not have gotten into drug usage?
    4. How did you not gain weight in prison? Did you exercise a lot?
    5. Did you miss your family while in prison?
    6. Are you able to tell us about your reaction when they told you how long you would have to serve?
    7. What was your first job when you got out of prison?
    8. Do you wonder what life would be life if you hadn’t done drugs or gone to jail?
    9. Do you want more kids in the future?
    Thank you, I hope you’ll be able to answer these sometime ☺️

    Personally, I love the sensitive and educated nature in which you approach each topic. If you were to make a video on making a tampon, I trust that you would have incredibly powerful insight on the bigger picture of how hygiene practices (especially women’s) needs to be improved within the prison system. Although I do agree this needs to be done with care as you mentioned, I’m interested to see and hear more about the first hand experience of the unfortunate circumstance of making your own tampons as a reference tool for my own activism toward women’s rights! You are a literal queen for putting yourself on this platform for me to do so on any topic, thank you❤️

    In always so sad my question never gets picked for these videos 😂😂 my question was :
    Do women compare the sentence they were given vs the crime they were convicted for? (I.e. if 2 women stole a car and one got 2 years and one got 10 years.) & does that cause drama?

    • @NickiGomez
      @NickiGomez 4 года назад

      I think its rare for one to have a longer sentence then another for committing the same crime, if it does happen then maybe that other person done more damage, they were the mastermind, or has charges besides the one they got arrested for & ofc it creates tension & stress between the two.

    • @SoupSpan
      @SoupSpan 4 года назад +1

      I think inmates generally keep quiet about their sentences. But interesting question!

    • @7heRedBaron
      @7heRedBaron 4 года назад +2

      Everyone knows what everyone did. Even if you don’t want to. Everyone knows how unjust the system really is without having to ask questions. One guy molested his daughter and had a few years. Another kid was selling drugs and got life. With rare exceptions, you couldn’t look at anyone’s sentence and judge the person by that. It was as random as throwing darts at balloons on the wall.

    • @ChicagosSinfulSwede
      @ChicagosSinfulSwede 4 года назад +1

      To answer your question, yes. Most ppl always ask how much time you gotta do. There are some that choose not to discuss their sentence, especially if they have a several decade bit or life. Now for the second part of your question.. sometimes sentencing is different even though the same crime was committed. Example: If you steal a car and I steal a car (grand theft auto), i might get more time because I'm already a convicted felon and have broken the law before, whereas you may only get the minimum sentence if you're a first time offender (you may be even able to walk on paper if you got a damn good lawyer). However, regardless of crime there is always a minimum sentence and a max sentence..meaning you as a first timer would get 2 years (cause that's the minimum), I may get 10 (cause that's the maximum) due to me being a repeat offender. Also, it has alot to do if you've got an attorney or not, if you pay someone to go hard for you, then theres more wiggle room as far as sentencing. Theres alot of variables to take into account.
