- This clip includes "UFO," one of the few original songs Pink Lady performed on the show. You can tell the difference in the energy and confidence when compared to a song performed in English. Other than that, it's more of the same lame comedy and hokey production.
MIE AND KEI: WHAT A DAY! Pink Lady should have been a hit show! Mie and Kei were VERY BEAUTIFUL and VERY TALENTED! They CERTAINLY had an APPRECIATIVE and ENTHUSIASTIC live audience! 😄😀😃😁😂🤣🥰😍💋❣

Sad thing about this show is that Pink Lady had legit talent when they were allowed to do their own thing.
You can tell they looked much more comfortable performing UFO than anything else they did on this show.

ピンクレディはアメリカでこれからと言う時、ケイに日本を離れられない事情あり、アメリカ進出を望まず、ミーはそれに従ったと。当時はその事、少し残念に思ったこと思い出しました。
過去においてはピンク・レディーが1番アメリカ進出で成功してたのかも？？

I didn't see "The Pink Lady" for centuries. I keep 2 cassettes: "PINK LADY U.S.A." & "Discovery by Electric Light Orchestra" in Summer, 1979. And now there's available on Spotify.

The girls were cute, they were good singers, and he was pathetic. Says it all, really....
To be fair, he was pretty handcuffed, couldn't ad-lib and if a joke was awful had to use it anyway, the girls had to learn everything phonetically well in advance since they didn't speak English.
It's not Jeff being awful, it's bad organization and bad booking.
Jeff Altman is a good comedian if you allow him to do magic tricks on stage or to improvise.
This is more of a Penn and Jillette and whose line anyway kind of guys. Even closer to Jim Varney (the two were good friends and did work together on many projects including that show).
Altman is not great comedian with scripted lines. He can't make the phone book funny.
They didn't allow him to do much magic - if any - and didn't allow any improvisation. They had a script and follow it...
And Altman wanted to be a director at that point, not being a comedian and host for a variety show.
He did well in Solid Gold and some commercials in the 1980s.
It's the wrong place for this guy. But NBC went with Jeff Altman is under a contract, he is not used much, he speaks English well, so dump it there... To reduce the exposure of the Pink Lady since they can't speak English.
That show could have worked if they took the time to organize it well before.

...when ya sing in Japanese, I'm sure the vast majority of people can understand the lyrics. I love the Japanese but speak or sing a different language and it really just ruins the song! LOL.
Probably lack of promotion or the girls didn't speak much English.
Probably because of the suckiness.
Aside from Mie and Kei not understanding English, it was mostly bad timing on all sides. Both disco and American variety shows were on life support. Pink Lady's popularity was on a decline at the time. Also, America wasn't very open to non-English hitmakers unlike today. Pink Lady's management shot too high and crashed big-time as a result. Perhaps if they just concentrated on the Japanese communities in the U.S., they would've been just fine.
Most of America was watching "THE DUKES OF HAZZARD" on CBS- and wondering when Daisy Duke's cut-offs would finally slip down............. ;)
Jeff didn’t have talent. He wasn’t funny.
The ladies couldn’t speak English. Therefore, no comic timing.
Having these two as guests on a variety show, singing a hit of theirs with English lyrics would have been a good idea. But that’s it.
He was cute, they were horrible.

Albeit a short-lived series, Pink Lady were the only ones I tuned in to watch; and paid virtually no attention to anybody/anything else.
