Dana does caricatures of celebrities, not impressions. This format is no good for him. He needs to be able to exaggerate mannerisms in equally exaggerated situations. Like Will Farrell, who didn't do a good Bush Jr impression, it isn't about being "spot-on" with mimicry; it's about exaggerating the persona and being damn funny in the process.
it doesn't have to be exaggerated to be a good impression. In fact being spot-on is more difficult than exaggerating. Dana is neither actually he mostly gives out a subtle likeness
Dana is a class act. In the late 1980's, I was at a Todd Rundgren concert, when a couple of seats opened up near the stage, and my friend and I decided someone should use them. Jon Lovitz was on stage singing a funny song with Todd. About 20 minutes later, I hear some whispering behind me, and see Jon and Dana standing in the aisle. I realized that we'd stolen their seats. I asked if that was the case. Dana said, "Don't worry. We can stay here." Of course, we gave them their seats, but they weren't even remotely angry. Very cool.
Dana Carvey comes from a different time and a different "school" of impressionism, before guys like Frank Caliendo started popping up along with hundreds of people on RUclips who can do unbelievable mimicry. Carvey was gold on SNL and still is pretty funny in his stand-up because he's able to capture a certain quirkiness about a celebrity and then somehow turn that into a new character. It's like Chevy Chase's take on Gerald Ford, which was even more extreme because he didn't even TRY to look or sound like him, but it was a brilliant character and brilliant satire from Chevy and the writers. Dana's Bush Sr barely resembles the actual Bush and basically the extent of the similarity is that he just exaggerates a couple mannerisms, but is an amazing character. I would rather impersonate HIS version of Bush than to try to actually do the real one. Same with his Ross Perot, Paul McCartney, George Michael, Tom Brokaw, John McLaughlin, Johnny Carson, Mickey Rooney. His Obama impression is really funny to me, the Trump stuff I've seen him do has been good. They're not perfect imitations but are instead hilarious Bizarro Land caricatures of those people. It was never the kind of thing with him where you could close your eyes and be like "Wow it's like they're right there!" which is why this video sucks and why he sucks in it. This kind of bite-sized thing isn't good for characters, it's just to show off perfect, instantly recognizable imitations.
Exactly! People are unimpressed by his actual impressions, which is not the point. The point is that he is creating a character, and greatly exaggerating them in ordinary situations.
+Elisha Zepeda I agree but I don't think that it really works in this video. There's no time to create a character so it just feels like Dana doing a lame impression of a celebrity doing something random. I think Vanity Fair screwed up and Dana was silly to go along with it, although of course I'm guessing he did more material for all of these than what they're actually showing.
I agree with Dylan. What Carvey does is create caricatures, which he does very well - but the "nano-impression" format is more about perfect mimicry, and the two don't really mix.
Carvey's impressions are more caricature than accurate. He kind of hides (for lack of a better term) behind exaggeration. Ross Marquand is masterful. He does the voices flawlessly but really sells it with mannerism and nuanced body language.
I agree... My father thinks he is a god among men. I admit he is good at some, but he is just another guy who does impressions, nothing special. Especially in this video, you shouldn't have to tell us who it is beforehand, haha
Be nice, Carvey ceased to be relevant years ago and so he's been pulling strings lately to be on Conan and Fallon and just do his "impressions" to get some applause. Poor guy.
These impressions would have been relevant 25 years ago. There are unknown youtubers with a larger and far more impressive collection of impressions. Behold the mediocrity! Marvel at it's laziness. Meh.
Ashani Francis A google search demonstrates my statement to be true. Dana Carvey has been doing literally the EXACT stuff since the early 90s. Check out Jamie Costa and a host of others who do relevant impressions well. www.reddit.com/r/impressions

@@Jackiekavindait's better than me doing impressions.
I've just noticed Dana kinda looks like Sam Rockwell.
YES!! That's who it was. THANK YOU!!
mixed with Gary Oldman
Or maybe Sam Rockwell looks like Dana
Sando the Mando i know this comment was 3 years ago but i clicked on this video thinking it was gonna be sam rockwell doing impressions
Thought exactly the same
His 'Garth' is ok I guess.

Comedy is exaggerating stuff and making sadness into laughter
WELL SAID
its like master of disguise all over again
Translation: "Turtle turtle!"
sweet potatoes
I'd love to do one of these :)
Omg, Jamie. I know I'm a little late, but I want to say you have an outstanding Robin Williams impression! Keep it up, Buddy! :)
nah... ur too good for vanity fair.
omg please let him do this!
Jamie Costa yesss please!!! Harison Ford! Robin Williams!
His Cary Grant reminded me of Tony Curtis in "Some like it Hot" when he pretends to be the millionaire for Sugar.
Yes! Lmao
Which Tony admits to doing a Cary Grant impression while performing that role.
Carvey's impressions are more caricature than accurate. He kind of hides (for lack of a better term) behind exaggeration. Ross Marquand is masterful. He does the voices flawlessly but really sells it with mannerism and nuanced body language.
Loved it! Jimmy Stewart and Linkedin? C'mon. Cary Grant is also good for Tony Curtis.
"Everybody's hideous!" 😂😂
Pass the sweet potatoes lmao I died
the jimmy stewart was brilliant
His Jimmy Stewart is awesome.. and the sound was "exact"..✌️
let's all agree ross was the best
James Tree It's so unfair. Ross is talented, young, cool, and handsome all at once. I really like his Kevin Spacey impression. Fits him so well lol
true
Agreed. So say we all.
I was kinda hoping he did Church Lady but oh well lol
Garth was the best by far
iluvgtasan Yep
Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant were so good!
Dana had me at "Well isn't that special"
The thumbnail is a good enough Owen Wilson impression on its own
so good that you can rewind and repeat sections of a video on youtube, otherwise most of this would have flown right past me
No Paul Mccartney!?
They were all super exaggerated. He basically did caricatures of the people he was doing impressions of.
thats what makes it so good and funny
That's how comedy works.
@Amabelle Smith that's not an accurate impression though, it's funny but it isnt what comes to mind when you hear impression.
Dear video uploader from "Vanity Fair": TURN UP THE SOUND. Holy crap.
1:18 Perfect.
This is the earliest I've ever gotten to a video :)
He’s still the master!
Keep making magazines Vanity Fair, there's a future in that!
Tony Montana got me
He didn't have to say anything as Garth, and I cracked up!
Ross Marquand was much better, to be fair. But he had more relatable character/moments.
he was better in every way.
Marquand was doing imitations. Carvey does caricatures, because he's a comedian. They're not going for the same goal.
his GW Bush is so good it could trick the secret service
I think Garth Algar was the highest point of his career
dicaevoli1 You must have never seen Church Lady.
Steve Neill So he peaked even earlier. Even more's the point, then.
Is it just me or did his Sean Connery sound like Scooby Doo?
Looks like a young Gary Oldman
owen wilson, spot on
I was waiting for Paul McCartney
How about some volume, Vanity Fair?
While people need to stop trying to do Bernie Mac. They sound like Bernie Sanders
Except for Jason Sudeikis his was pretty good
The schwarzenegger got me! 😂
He's got Trump's mannerisms down but his voice sounded nothing like him.
What is the name of the jazzy song at 0:04 please someone lolllllllll I need to know!
Cary Grant slayed me.
Dana Carvey 🙌🏼
No Paul McCartney?
Kinda odd they did Trump twice.
I want the tony montana more
Dana Carveys impressions works better as sketches where likeness is over exaggerated. They're not very accurate.
He looks like when you put facial animations on 500%
The best is probably Owen Wilson
Game on!
Excelent performans, I like this guy😂
Feel like the Garth one is cheating, surely 😂
They're all just him waving his hands around and freaking out
IM GOING TO BE A MASTER OF DISGUISE
nano is right.
Fucking brilliant.
Re-watched "Master of Disguise" recently. You can become another person!
"Big dog little hill"
Ugh they had to throw Garth in there and make me want Waynes World 3
cant hear shit
The best!
I love Dana Carvey but the same impressions he always does gets a bit old
Hey, Vanity Fair; you should get comedian Godfrey. He does pretty good impressions.
Shoulda got a real impressionist, like the guy that used to do Ross Perot on SNL...now *there* was a talent...
What's smaller than micro because that's what these were
Johnny Carson was PERFECT. I laughed out loud. But, besides that... meh
Why does he feel the need to rapidly shake during all his impressions...
Not great
colorblind and death. fml
nah
This was the only video in this series that wasn't good
Guy is stuck in the past
These aren't really "nano." They're quite exaggerated.
I loved you as a kid, Dana... that's about all I can say now.
gabelogan56 Exactly.
Fucking horrendous. Who told this guy he was good at impressions?
NOTE: It has nothing to do with how irrelevant half of the impression root personalities were.
I agree... My father thinks he is a god among men. I admit he is good at some, but he is just another guy who does impressions, nothing special.
Especially in this video, you shouldn't have to tell us who it is beforehand, haha
whybother929
This guy is your father? Amazing.
+ajnode -_- Try again
Be nice, Carvey ceased to be relevant years ago and so he's been pulling strings lately to be on Conan and Fallon and just do his "impressions" to get some applause. Poor guy.
I also have done a video on my channel (my latest one) which involved multiple impressions if you guys wanted to check it out!
I'll check it out!... you've gotta be better than this embarrassing shit show.
So bad.
one of the most overrated impressionists of all time
“Overrated” 🙄 ok kid
GUUFFAW
Gonna be honest... these were trash.
It's weird they had him in the same series as the other impressionists. Dana's impressions are comedy based, not supposed to be 100% accurate.
funny stuff :)
Dana tries too hard with the faces, doesn’t come off as good or funny, kinda obnoxious really.
Dana Carvey has ZERO talent. None
Dana Carvey was never good at impressions.
Just awful
He is bad
Dan S low taste, high ignorance
These impressions would have been relevant 25 years ago. There are unknown youtubers with a larger and far more impressive collection of impressions. Behold the mediocrity! Marvel at it's laziness. Meh.
Nah, that's a false statement
