Emily was wrong in not being truthful with Zander about her feelings for Nikolas from the start. As a married woman, she was also wrong in being with him. That said, I believe Zander knew deep down in his heart that Emily loved Nikolas. Zander tried to reassure himself that she loved him by repeatedly questioning her, "Are you sure?" "Do you love me?" "Are you sure you want to marry me?" Zander knew in his heart there was a glimpse of doubt in her answers, yet he still went along and married her. There was an invisible, hidden selfish love from Zander for Emily, while Nikolas's love for Emily was always selfless. Nikolas knew deep down in his heart Emily loved him yet respected Emily's decision to be with Zander, an action that Zander didn't do and take with Nikolas and Emily. That's why I don't feel sorry for Zander. Again, what Emily did was wrong for not being honest, but Zander's deep knowledge of Emily's feelings, despite her telling him the contrary was just as bad or more because he wasn't being truthful to himself. He convinced himself she loved him by marrying her, but he never had her heart.
I completely agree with you, Zander's love for Emily was "not selfless" the way Nikolas's love for Emily was, he honored and respected her wishes, he didn't go beat up Zander or want "revenge or payback' the way Zander ended up doing with Nikolas and Emily.. The fact that Zander even tried to put Nikolas's in jail for a crime he did not commit and Rick played along because Liz and Rick wanted to make sure Zander would let them keep the baby, proves Zander's love was not selfless....
This so much reminds me of Luke and Luke Déjà vu all over again. Trying to stay away from one another still loving & wanting each other not wanting to be alone together because Laura didn't trust herself alone with Luke because she was a "married woman." Big deal she was still thinking about it, leading Luke on, jealous of him, etc. same as this storyline.
