  • Hot and cold compress after a sports injury
The sports injuries are prevalent for sports persons, and it may also be seen in other people. The common areas of sports injury are knee and ankle. You may have sprain/strains in the knee and ankle. In females, the patella-femoral articulation is mostly injured.
The solution for the sports injury swelling is by using cold compress and healing process is enhanced by the use of hot compress. Compress is a therapy done by pressing any pad or absorbent on the area of injury, which helps to stop bleeding and further inflammation. Sports injuries are commonly treated
by RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation).
    Hot compress
Hot compress helps to reduce the inflammation and enhance the healing process. Due to the warmth provided, the injured area & blood vessels become dilated, and the blood flows to the affected area increases. The more the blood supplied to the injured part, the more nutrients and the healing cells like macrophages will be rich to the area and heal the injury faster. The increased blood supply will take away the lactic acids and other toxins from the affected area.
There are multiple benefits of using a hot compress like it relieves pain, inflammation, decreased healing time, helps in muscle relaxation etc.
    Duration for hot compress
The nature and severity of the problem should be kept in mind while applying a hot compress. The duration may vary from 5-15 minutes as per the tolerance capacity of the patient. A hot compress can be repeated in the small sessions once in every 2hours. This practice should be done under the guidance of the physician.
    Cold compress
A cold compress helps to reduce the inflammation and swelling of the injured part. Cold compress has a vasoconstriction effect on the blood vessels. Hence, it will reduce the blood supply to the affected area, the lesser the blood supplied to an extent, the lesser the inflammation will be to reduce the redness and pain of the injured area. It controls the bleeding to the affected area and prevents bacteria, gangrene formation, and prevent oedema.
It is most effective when applied within 48 hours of the injury and reduces the tissue damage. Swelling and inflammation of joints are also treated with the help of ice and compress.
Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
You can use cold treatment in osteoarthritis, gout, strains, tendinitis and recent injuries. It is also used for treating migraine headaches.
    Hot and Cold compress
Both hot and cold compress is not applicable on open wound areas. Hot compress is generally more
useful than cold in treatment of muscle pain or arthritis.
You can do the procedure at your home after consulting your doctor. A hot compress can be done through the use of hot water bottle or pads. While in cold compress you can use a bottle filled with cold water or a cooling pad. The hot place should be used 72 hours after the injury when the swelling is reduced.
An ankle twists, also known as a sprain, can be recovered within two weeks. It can be
sometimes painful after two weeks, or the pain may last for one year or so, but it is infrequent.
In general, the ankle twist recovery time is two weeks. The swelling enables regular walking, but once it is gone, you can walk a can perform exercises.
    Hot Fomentation
Hot fomentation includes the compression with a warm cloth. First, the fabric is soaked in hot infusion and then applied to the injured part. Hot fomentations are continuously kept warm. It is more like compresses, but the material is left for cooling down in the hot compress. Always comfort the patient and ask if the fomentations are burning the patient. Hot fomentation should be performed in a warm room. The special attention should be paid while applying it on children and old persons. The extra dry towels should be used for layering if the hot fomentation is too much hot. The parts in which the bones are closer to the skin surface are more prone to burn, should be handled with care.

      Hello,
      Thanks for sharing your concern.
Lumps are of various kinds. It could be infectious /non infectious/ kelloid/ benign/ subcutaneous fat lump etc. These can be diagnosed only by seeing the lump and the treatment is prescribed accordingly.
Since buttock is a sensitive area and soft tissue area and hence an infectious lump in that area can penetrate into deeper parts and may require medical treatment or surgical excision depending on the severity on physical examination. Hence I would request you to visit a general physician/surgeon for this at the earliest for an optimal treatment
