    My fantasy casting for Mrs Quinn is Imelda Staunton.

    This video was so much fun to watch! A children’s movie adaptation of House on the Cerulean Sea was the first book that came to mind when I saw the title of your video. Children’s books and movies are lacking in non heterosexual love stories, we need more of them and this one is perfect for a younger audience.
    We are very big fans of Come From Away here in Atlantic Canada, I even know one of the cast members from the Broadway production- the man who played Kevin! I would love to see a film adaptation of it as well
    I grew up in a family owned funeral home so I’m always entertained by funeral home books and movies, but Six Feet Under and My Girl were so successful, I can’t see how Fun Home would be any different.
    3 books you didn’t mention that I think would be great movies would be the Great Believers, The Love Songs of WEB DuBois and Demon Copperhead. The last two could probably be a mini series, but I’d love to see all three brought to life on screen.

    • @SupposedlyFun

      I thought about Love Songs but was worried that even in a series it would be difficult to capture what's so good about it--but I would love to see someone try. And I don't know how I didn't consider Demon Copperhead! A series for that would be 💯

    Just going back through some recent readers, Clear by Carys Davis, Eastbound by Maylis De Kerangal, Winter Love by Suyin Han, Blizzard by Marie Vingtras, Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson, Dark Matter by Michelle Paver, The Reformatory by Tananarive Due, also The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, so many more.
    But that raises the question whether I would actually watch them. I don’t do tv anymore (Strangers with Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal was a rare exception) and I don’t really go to the movies unless it’s something or someone I’m really excited about. So, maybe these should all stay as books and more people should read them?

    • @SupposedlyFun
      @SupposedlyFun  29 дней назад

      Eastbound would make for a very interesting movie. I do get frustrated when an adaptation comes out and people assume they don't need to read the book--I feel like a broken record telling people that The Power of the Dog is even better as a book. But it can also raise awareness for a book and drive a portion of viewers to the page, so maybe it's worth it?

    • @mradcaqbdb
      @mradcaqbdb 29 дней назад

      @@SupposedlyFun Let’s compromise and say people should definitely do both the film and the book for The Power of the Dog. I can’t agree that the book was better. I thought the additional information in the beginning of the book was interesting but not necessarily required. And that film and at least one of its actors was robbed, robbed, robbed at the Oscars. (I know you disagree.)
      But in general, always read the book first, unless your favorite actor is starring in the film and you don’t want his performance spoiled. 🙂 (I’d have been devastated to know the end of Dog before seeing it play out on screen.) I can’t really say I have any films or tv series I’m dying to see, but I do have a ton of books I’m dying to read. That reminds me that I have to drop most of my tv content. My cable bill is ridiculous.

  • @pwcinla
    @pwcinla 29 дней назад +1

    The trouble is, Hollywood isn't interested in making films for grown ups anymore. And many grown-ups would rather see movies at home rather than deal with people talking and texting during a movie. Many of these picks would have a better chance of being made as limited series for a streamer. I could see The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store being directed by Cord Jefferson. Or Mrs. Quinn being made in the UK and starring Imelda Staunton (edit: I see someone else mentioned this).
    A few more for the list: The Corrections, Middlesex, Black Leopard Red Wolf, The Moor's Last Sigh, Piranesi, and Ted Chiang's short story The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate.

    • @SupposedlyFun
      @SupposedlyFun  29 дней назад

      The problem isn't necessarily interest so much as profit. They're pouring money into areas that feel like sure bets (like the insane amount of money they're paying Robert Downey, Jr. to return to Marvel) rather than take a risk on anything else. And even streamers are cutting back on projects they're committing to right now. But that's part of why this is a fun exercise: it's more about what you would like to see instead of what's likely.

    +1 for The Secret History. But then, it might be that Brett Easton Ellis beat it to the punch since an adaptation of The Shards is already in the works. And if you've read both The Secret History and The Shards, you'd rather have the screen adaptations released one at a time rather than simultaneously. So, I say have The Secret History adaptation be released around a year after The Shards adaptation, which allegedly has Jacob Elordi on it.

      I'm still so confounded by all of the decisions that went into that adaptation.

    Never been so disappointed by an adaptation than I was with Kindred (OK maybe the Goldfinch). I think some of the choices they made like Kevin being a random dude was meant to make Dana more of girlboss. Which was confusing, why adapt it if you don’t respect the original character?
    Would love to see Jordan Peele adapt it.

      Jordan Peele would do a fascinating version of Kindred. And I agree: turning the husband into a dude she had JUST met was truly confounding. Just a strange decision.

    I'm watching less and less movies, and start reading a lot more since last year. I really think, the book is better than movies in most cases. Movies are getting really bad these days

      I'm hopeful that we're in an awkward phase where studios haven't figured out how to compete with streaming except to rely on IP, etc. Studios relied on sword-and-sandal movies to compete with television back in the day, so maybe we'll enter a new era soon.

    The nonfiction book about the second rise of the KKK and the woman that brought them down, Fever In the Heartland should be snapped up by a young female Hollywood producer/actor who wants a surefire awards winner. Also a great role for a male actor to change their minds about what he can do by playing an evil, sleazy character.

      That does sound like it would be a very compelling movie.

      I'm not convinced it will happen at this point! I think the trickiest part is that the two stories never really line up aside from the fact that they happen at the same time.
