    Yes, the OEM BMW crash bars have a serious design flaw. They “cradle” the cylinder from below, but they can bend up in a crash. I installed the Touratech crash bar support that strengthens the OEM crash bar by connecting it to the frame above the cylinder. Several tipovers on hard dirt/gravel and the bars haven’t moved even 1mm! Worth the money, super easy to install...and MUCH cheaper than swapping out with a whole new set! Just my 2¢...

    Same thing I see every time people drop their bikes, they go really quick and pick it up - all stressed out. After years of riding, I've learned to take a moment, assess your body first, assess the bike's position and situation, breath in and relax. Whatever happened, take your time, as picking up the bike way too quick without thinking can be very dangerous. Also, whatever brand of bars you have, get the head extension on and this will solve your problem. I got the Touratech extension for my OEM bars, and I've dropped it many times with no damage. Cheers.

    Drop it again...and again...and again...etc... You crash so much you need a roll cage. HaHaHa. Glad you survived the self inflicted mayhem! Don't worry about the bike, I read somewhere it is insured.

    I have the Stock GSA bars but installed the aftermarket support and my bike has been through serious rocks, personal opinion is they work just fine with the additional support preventing them from pushing in

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86  2 года назад

      That's the solution for most people. The support bars are great and will probably outlast the bike.

    I'm glad you posted this. It makes me feel better about all the crashes and resulting scratches and chips I have accumulated on my new Honda Adventure Sports. I run Outback Motortek on mine. Altrider did not have a crash bar for my bike at the time. But the OMs are damn hardy.

    I am very glad to see you are using and enjoying your BMW in the way for which it was designed. People often cringe at some of my crash bar scratches and other minor dents and dings, I mention its not a Goldwing or Harley its a GSA "Adventure" Bike. Stay safe

    Thanks for sharing. I see your experience as what I would expect for me if I were to get a 1200GS. Short legs and a high COG are not a good mix, especially when you've got the terrain throwing all sorts of variables at you.

    This makes me angry that BMW, of all motorcycle manufacturers, can't deliver a proven crash bar. How many riders out there put the OEM bars on thinking they're adequately protected?

    • @mcs5271
      @mcs5271 3 года назад +1

      Yeah, what a crappy company. I'm sure they intended and tested the crash bars to be hit again, and again, and again. Maybe he should sue them, then use the money to learn how not to drop a $20K bike 10+ times.

    OEM crash bars are a compromise. The BMW bars are like crumple zones. They’re designed to give/move, so that the forces are not fully transferred to the all-important frame. Their job is to protect the cylinder heads from one semi-decent fall (because if you hole a head casing it can’ be ridden home), without writing off the frame. I.e. The whole motorcycle. The big GSA can be ridden at moderate speeds off-road, with a moderately competent off-road rider aboard, in moderately good weather and on moderately good surfaces. But for serious off-road fun, either a more off-road focused bike like a KTM 250 EX, or a light and cheap bike that you don’t mind getting scratched to bits, is obviously the way to go. Don’t believe the “Unstoppable" marketing hype, it's called a crash for a reason.

  • @TeamStruggleBunny

    Man I feel your experiences. The front end on the GS bikes really is prone to tucking, especially in loose stuff. As for the crash bars, my 2 cents - I'd rather have a weaker crash bar vs a crash bar that is stronger then the frame its connected to. If there is a point of failure let it be the crash bar. I take my GSA into similar places but tend to go slower as the Mrs is usually on the back.
    Sucks about writing the bike off, could have been much worse though. Did you hit loose stuff, touch a beg down or the tires just give way?
    Ref your last comment ATGATT….I gotta point out the lack of gloves in one of your trail clips, lol ; )

    • @AdamChandler86

      The bikes are not that abused. The motors are strong. Just stay on top of maintenance. Don’t catch yourself, try to get out from under the bike when you are crashing and don’t worry about saving it. Once it’s going down, get away don’t try to stop it.

      I've tried a lot of tires but honestly, I crash a lot less now since I mostly ride a dirt bike on serious trails and my skills in managing the big ADV bike have gotten a lot better. Last 2 weekends of off-roading on the GS, didn't drop it once.

    • @AdamChandler86
      @AdamChandler86  5 лет назад +2

      First priority for me is engine shut-off. On newer models (2016 and newer) there is an engine cut off when the bike has a hard fall / crash. On two of my crashes, the engine has cut off automatically. Obviously if you're hurt, don't move but the bike is not meant to run on its side, Oil in the pan will flow into the left cylinder starving the right and can lead to a lot of mechanical issues. After the bike is upside down for a bit with motor off, flip it back over and let it sit upright for 10 minutes to let the oil go back down into the bottom of the motor. After you restart, you'll have some white smoke coming from the exhaust. This will go away after a few miles.
