    Great job. In the US this is taught in "ride like a cop" classes. Control your speed with the rear brake (when required) and maintain a constant throttle position and slipping clutch. Establish a full-lock turn and -- If the bike starts to fall to the inside -- add some power with the clutch. It takes some practice, but works well. I paid to drop someone else's bike while learning! :)

    • @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite
      @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite  6 лет назад +40

      Thank you :)
      But the way descibed here is not the same than the US police officer. Here, we lean and reduce speed to have the handlebar in full lock. So to start the U-turn, you need to create some speed, and we don't turn the handlebar, it turns itself. Then, in full lock, you have to have a constant speed, and increase it only when the rear wheel ends the turn ;)
      And you can do it without the clutch (but maybe not with all bike).

    Thanks for the video! I'm surprised this is considered new or unusual for many ...this technique of "tipping the bike in" for slow speed turns and counter steering was taught extensively at a motorcycle safety course I took several years ago to obtain my road license in Canada.
    It's a vital skill and not just to pull a u turn but useful in many instances especially if you ride on congested city streets.

    • @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite
      @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite  6 лет назад +5

      You're welcome :)
      But I made this video to show that you can counter steer even at low speed, and more over, if you brake, you will not fall. Last thing, you don't need to look where you want to go (this allows you to look around you about traffic), and you don't need to do counter weight...

  • @Pete4875
    @Pete4875 5 лет назад

    It is a honor that you have considered my email for reply. My mother told me as a kid after I had just walked into into a parking meter "Watch where you are going"! I have taught hundreds of students how to ride a motorcycle in the mid "80. Many things have change thru the years as more information becomes apparent but looking where you going is NOT one of them. Maybe it is a language barrier between us. OF COURSE you don't fixate on any one object as in your roundabout example but certainly one of the places you better look is where you are going.
    I do not base my information on "myth of the look, because every body tell it" I have seen it over and over and over, after teaching beginning students, Police, arm forces. If they can't do the exercise they are not looking where they want to go.

    • @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite
      @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite  5 лет назад

      I teach to my student to not look, and they can do it. So your student can't do, mine can.
      We just don't ride the same way, the look is only a small part of everything. I don't ever teach anymore counter weight and counter steering, and it works too.
      You can do a good job from a lot of years, but you are always doing the same.
      I don't do the same thing than you.
      It is like you are teaching to do box, and I am teaching judo :)

    Thank you for your incredible videos. By breaking down the individual steps and explaining what is going on, the seen and unseen, you allow me to create an understanding in my head that dramatically improves my riding skills. Other instructors will tell you to do things but they don't explain the "why". You breakdown and explain the "why" which helps me understand what is going on and how I can improve my riding. So much that we do in controlling a motorcycle is unseen because it happens so fast, or we aren't even aware it is happening. Your brilliant videos fill in a lot of the blanks for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Maybe one day soon I'll even be able to do a U-turn in a 5 meter radius (16.4 feet). :)

    When I did my motorcycle licence test in Australia, I think it was 1978, you had to do figure 8s within the space of four carparks. In this video the guy does a U turn in two spaces, imagine two more, so two by two. If your feet touched the ground it was a fail. I dunno if they still do it or not. The hardest part was trusting your own skills and throttle control, because once you lean it over you have to keep the speed up or over she goes. Once you get the hang of it, you wonder what all the fuss was about.

    I have used this technique for about 6 months now with my 2015 BMW R1200RT and it works great and I'm over 76 years old.. I've even used the U-Turn technique on gravel roads!! NO GUTS NO GLORY! Ole dogs can learn new tricks and I've been riding for over 60 years!! I've seen videos on U-Tube of guy high siding, because it really looks like they used this technique negatively and the bikes end up going straight off of the road! As the TV ad use to say: "Try it Mikey likes it!"

    All this stuff does is confuse people...... just let peoples' natural reflex take over. Pushing right goes left pushing left goes right, lean this lean that, counter-steer when you are over 20 mph, don't counter steer if you are less than 19.88595868 mph, etc, etc,......... it just confuses people and make things worse when they are on the road and thinking which way do I push the handle bar again? And ends up in the ditch!!!

    • @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite
      @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite  5 лет назад +2

      When I made this video, it was to show that you can counter steer at any speed. This means you can train yourself with the same way of leaning at every speed.
      But it doesn't mean that you HAVE to to that. I don't ride like that, for example, I never counter steer. But I know what counter steer is, and for those who were thinking that you need some speed to do it, this video shows the contrary :)

    Simple. Countersteer just before the turn to throw all the weight the direction you're turning. The bars automatically turn the way you want to go..

    You are right; well done.
    But there is also a second reason to point the front wheel in the opposite direction of the turn:
    doing so gives you an extra 20 cm (or somewhat) to make the diameter of the turning circle larger, while the main body of the bike stays more or less in the same position.
    It might seem not much, but in thight corners (and certainly where there are curbstones on both sides) it gives you that extra space to make the turn.
    Back in the days, we were thaught to do that in Belgian Federal Police Riding School ...
    Stay Safe...
    Ed.

    • @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite
      @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite  6 лет назад +3

      Thank you :) but for me, the fact that the bike goes first to the opposite direction is not good: you loose some space at the beginning of the U-turn, especially with curbstones. What you win at the end, you loose it at the beginning. I should compare with the other U-turn lol

    I came back from Metz doing the course last weekend and feel like sharing a few words.
    If you catch yourself watching Anti Pilote de Ligne Droit videos more than twice, it's time for you to plan yourself a trip to France. :)
    It will be more than worth it, you will learn a lot and acquire fantastic new skills which may also save you from a possible future crash, if you rely solely on countersteering to turn and one day slippery surface betrays you.
    This is more than just riding a motorcycle, it's about increasing overall awareness and proprioception about you and your body.
    If you have ever done any martial art in your life, you'll find strong resemblence, it's about finding that fine delicate feel for things and perfecting it.
    Yes, this is a martial art, and Clément is a sensei. A motorcycle Yoda which will show you your way to become a Jedi knight. :)
    He'll take you into the deep dark forest where 2+2=5 and you cannot (!) fall of the motorcycle.
    You'll be up exploring the uncharted territory through a series of challenging tasks and brilliant exercises and each will grab you way out of your comfort zone but at the end you will manage!!! :)
    Come fit!
    The body effort needed to lean the motorcycle Japanese style is very tough on your core, as you need to hold your body yourself at all times, so better come as fit as you can, do stability exercises, planks, side planks and push-ups.
    Come prepared!
    Study all the major Anti Pilote de Ligne Droit videos so you can ask all the right questions.
    Take your girlfriend/wife with you!
    Metz is a beautiful place and France at its best!
    The closest international airport to Metz is in Luxembourg, which is only 1h train ride away.
    That's a convenient way to arrive.
    My advice: take a week off and do two courses on two consecutive weekends!

Many professional riders do it naturally without thinking

    With enough tilt over and sufficient power spin flip the back end around in an arc. Easier to do with big capacity engine but tire might smoke. Small bikes lack the needed power but it's possible even to flip round a 50cc with practice.

    The rightening effect comes from gyroscopic precession. When the bike falls to the right the precession force steers to the right and wheels return below the center of gravity.
    The narrow curves come from wheelbarrow steering. You steer a wheelbarrow by leaning it to the side you want to go to and then the tire "crabs" sideways. Because motorbikes and wheelbarrows have the same shape of tyres you can make a turn shorter by staying upright yourself and "pushing" the bike down.

    If you have trouble on a Scooter with a fly clutch or automatic transmission of some sort, you can use the rear brake opposing the throttle to have better control. So you hold a bit of throttle and only control it with the rear brake. I turn like this every morning and evening when i park my scooter which is a burgman 650 and it helps with stability. 275kg :P

    Come to think about it, this is exactly how we did u-turns on our bicycles as kids. Just push through with half a pedal stroke and lean the hell into it. These days I do it on my maxi scooter, much like I did it on my moped scooter. Give er a whallop, countersteer to lean into the turn, and drag the rear brake to squat the scooter into the turn. Turning within 2 parking spaces is easy. But then again, very few motorcycles can turn like a scooter with the centre stand removed.

    Very interesting and skilled handling. The counter steering was scientifically exposed when trying to have some device ("robot") ride a bike. In my country, people ride HPV bikes so much they generally untuitively do the counter steering. With some people this is so deeply programmed in their memory they even do it when driving cars.

    I'm scared to try this but I shall. Our u turn conditions in Mumbai, India are far more precarious and there are often interruptions to one's u turn so we need to be prepared to brake in the middle of it. Which is doable by standing the bike up but it all happens very fast and often results in a drop. But there are tons of u turns or tight right/left handers so this is a useful skill to learn

    The geometry on the front steering of a motorcycle is quite complex and the contact point with respect to the hinge is so important. One does not need too much self centring action on a motorcycle as it could go unstable. Normally the geometry is such that the contact point is in line with the axis of the hinge, but it is not as simple as that.

    I see that this method of uturn is started with the wheel straight, then turned slightly out, which then turns into the uturn. I’m thinking this methodology is specifically to get things going quickly from a dead stop.
    In contrast, when the bike is already slowly rolling to make an uturn, then this out to in dip to create momentum and use counter steer to move the inner tire radius isn’t as necessary (and hence not a Japanese uturn).

    • @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite

  • @FredricF

    Good vid but I have one small point: It's not the gyroscopic effect that keep the bike stable when you pick up speed, it's the steering geometry. The gyroscopic effect is negligible on a motorcycle.

    That first countersteer "twitch" is the equivalent of Gerry Palladino's "dip", I think? It makes a massive difference as the bike WANTS to go into the turn. I've never been brave enough to try it from a full stop yet, though ;-)

    • @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite
      @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite  3 года назад

      No it is not the same. From what I saw about Jerry, the bike starts first to go the opposite side of the turn, this create a centrifugale force which leans the bike to the opposite side. Here, we are using the geometry of the bike, so the bike is not moving as much to the opposite side, and it leans easy.
      Last point, here, we are starting from a stop, we don't have inertia.

    8:56 I am not sure if you counter lean you torso in regards to the lean of the bike at slow speeds but counter leaning with the upper body will decrease the turning radius quite a lot...up to 10% or more...
    Also u turning from a stop on the side of the road with the handlebars turned full lock (or at least 30-35 degrees) before rolling all the while the rider looks over his/her shoulder towards the end of the u turn will further stabilize the turn and make it smoother and quicker (pursuit mode activated)

    • @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite
      @AntiPiloteDeLigneDroite  3 года назад

      Counter lean is a second myth too... to be efficient, it would mean that you can move the barycenter of the bike a lot, like on trial bikes. On big bike, it is so much closer from the center of gravity of the bike that you'll need to move a LOT your shoulder (and ass, and back) to be able to move it.
      Only rotation of the handlebar creates a momentum that straighten the bike (the more it can turns, the more you'll have balance, this is probably why we can see only u-turn with trail-bike or harley, which are bike who can turn a lot on youtube, and never on a sportbike) combinated to the centrifugal forces which increases with the reduction of the radius.
      About starting with the handelbar turns in the direction, maybe you are right, I don't know, because it was not my idea to show that this technik is the best. Again, it was only to show that you can counter steer at low speed.

    2nd experiment can be experienced in cars, especially RWD. It's why accelerating, even a little bit, through a corner will settle the car and overcome the feeling of centripetal force pushing the car out. You can make very tidy turns like this, on the inside line, instead of being pushed out like all the soccer moms.
    It's a secondary* reason that braking in the corner is bad, it only makes the centripetal force worse and pushes the car further out on the turn. Americans fail at this every day for decades.
    * the primary reason has to do with the hard limit of tire elasticity, and having a fixed budget. That budget can go towards turning and/or braking... if you do both at the same time, you have less elastic budget for either. Thus it's better to brake then turn. Or, if you know the turn only requires x% of the tire's elastic budget, you can trail brake a little to maximize usage the resources available. However, I prefer to drive ~70% on the streets... always leaving 30% for unexpected events.
