like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

I got this working on my relatively cheap e-rod, Alexa (Dot) & Harmony Hub. No skill needed to set it up, just put the model of your motorized curtain rod into Harmony setup and most likely the remote functions are already available. Then you can program Harmony activities easily - open, wait 20 sec, stop - to open half way. Alexa fully supported through the Harmony skill.

Do you know of any solutions for 110v? The DT52S you can get in 220 or 110, but It looks like the KT320S is 220v only.

Nice work! Try this: Call them "drapes" instead of "curtains," and Alexa will respond to "open drapes" and "close drapes" instead of turn on/turn off. I'm not certain what's magic about "drapes." I can say that "Draperies" won't work with open/close commands. "Garage Door" or "Garage" also won't work. Drapes open/drapes closed works in my setup, which is an ESP8266 WiFi module attached to a Somfy remote. I designed it to operate a Somfy 3-button remote, deriving a third button push from a two-state control by looking at a Boolean drapes state variable. Search Somfy on Github if you'd like details.

What motorized roller blinds type product would you recommend instead of the curtain rail shown here that would work with the Aeotec controller?
Also, do you know if splicing the Beme Erod power cable work with the Aeotec controller as well (they seem to be using a quick plug setup)?

Hey there!! I've lived in SP for a year..and I REALLY miss the Kopi!
I'm a newbie to the world of automation and IoT - so please excuse if this is a silly question:
How does the motor know when to stop turning either way? Since you're only giving 2 commands (On: to turn one way, Off: to turn the other way) - theoretically the motor would try to keep spinning even when curtains are fully open or closed. So, I'm assuming it's much like a car window in that the motor itself senses a resistance/obstacle and then switches itself off.
The reason I'm asking this is because I'd like to integrate your method to horizontal blinds (i.e. tilt them up or down)...but the motor you demonstrate won't be easy to hide - so I'll need to use something else. Just wanted to make sure I look into other motors that have this "auto-off" function built in.
    Thanks!

When we test US products we normally always use a VPN with a US IP to avoid interference of the Great Firewall. Perhaps the below answer may also be of interest to you:
Q45: Does the Amazon Echo work outside the US?
Yes, but there are several important issues you have to take into account.
Below findings were valid on Thu, Sep 17, 2015 and may be resolved / updated via future software updates by Amazon or via hacks / custom fixes contributed by the community.
      US Time Zones Only
The Amazon Echo currently (as of Thu, Sep 17, 2015) only supports time zones covered by US Zip Codes. This means that for now you will be allocated a wrong / incorrect time zone on your Amazon Echo if your time zone is not covered by a US Zip Code, which is definitely the case for users in Europe and Asia.
The above impacts asking for the time (without mentioning your city), compatibility with your calendar and setting an alarm (specifying a time) on your Amazon Echo when you are outside the United States.
US ZIP Codes / Locations Only
This impacts local weather, news and traffic requests. Instead of asking: "Alexa, what is the weather like outside?", you will have to ask "Alexa, what is the weather like in Singapore?"

Wasn't Alexa already an "smart thing" hub? Was it not possible to run that without the Samsung hub?

    • @SmartHomeDB
      @SmartHomeDB  8 лет назад +1

Many products in the smart home landscape do not use Wi-Fi as a wireless protocol, but instead use protocols such as Z-Wave, Zigbee and Bluetooth.
The Amazon Echo is able to connect with products directly via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth but as of today (20160831) not with Z-Wave and/or Zigbee products.
Due to the above, you often times still need an additional smart home hub, such as the Samsung SmartThings Hub to realize certain implementations such as the one in this particular video: curtain control via voice commands.

you should think about it in other use cases, it's not just for the lazy.
even though you have voice control (which is fantastic) software control allows for so many more options. For example, if you like your curtains open in the morning but you leave for work you can have them close automatically during the hottest part of the day while you are at work.
also, consider people who are immobile due to age or injury that would prevent them from getting up and opening a curtain.
there is so much more that something like this could give someone a sense of independence or help reduce heating and cooling costs
