    The problem is young people are calling themselves old at 30. This is the mentality that is driving people to spend more time focused on what your age is over your production, or value to a business. Some older people are a lot more beneficial to a business than someone young that might leave or has a lot of time to move on in life.

    over 60 years old, 20 years of IT experience, 10 years of Advertising, 10 years experience in Finance...laid off 2 years 6 months, still can't find a job, can't even get hired for level jobs way below my current level...this is the reality of ageism....the reality that age trumps experience.

    I used to work at this one place where hardly anybody was over the age of 28. Reaching age 30 was like a death sentence. My old boss, who lost hearing on one of his ears due to childhood fever, wouldn’t dare to wear a hearing aid because he was already 40 and pressure was mounting against him.
    During the meetings, all of my ideas and inputs went totally ignored, until younger associates just repeated what I had just said and were congratulated by the group.
    When that started happening all the time, I decided to leave them and take my “brilliant ideas” to their competitor. Luckily, my new workplace values actual diversity of race, religion, body types, age, thinking, etc.
    My old workplace just pretended that they’re diverse - in early 2010s they finally started to use nonwhite models in ads, and now they even claim to support diversity. BUT only if you’re below age 26, tall, skinny, and Q2 personality type. (Yes, I had to take a training course on how everybody there is only Q2.)
    Thank goodness I left them.

    This is what happens when you raise an entire culture day by with with people who are only born within 12 months of each other and tell them "older people are bad". What should we expect? Its getting so bad these people are growing up thinking "They should be neglected and isolated". Living in a cheaper city will reduce his stress levels and allow him to think more clearly about the several other options he has and that he will see if he taps into his creativity. A large segment of America has spoken. It does NOT want policy that is "supportive of everyone." These policies are disparaged as "socialist." The vulnerable, so the narrative goes, have failed because they've made bad choices. So, older people who suffer deserve it because they made bad choices when they were young. People my age and younger seem unable to grasp that we'll be the "old people" if we're lucky enough to survive another 40+ years. That's too far in the future to worry about and we're having too much fun right now. And of course we're not making "bad decisions."
    Worst of all, the government itself promotes and practices age discrimination. Just check out most state and federal job boards or service (low paid) opportunities. There are age CUT OFFS all over the place. And even an ex-president (Obama) said there are too many old people in government. We're not going to overcome ageism because too many of us don't want to.

  • @MsMadmax1
    @MsMadmax1 4 года назад +13

    When the economic slump of 2008 the people who suffered the most were those who were within 15 years of retirement. It didn't matter that they had a college degree or years of experience at the job the were doing--they were cut loose because it cost the company's they worked for more to employ someone with that much experience and because it cost more to provide health insurance to employees over 40. If that isn't ageism, I don't know what is.

    It's pretty rough. I can see a difference even between 45 and when I was 40. The reality is, if you aren't "established" by the time you are 45-50, you are in big trouble. Older people like to work with younger people, of course. But what do you do when there are no more older people?
    Definitely to any young folks out there: you have about 27 years (18-45) to get your stuff together before this hits you.

    At 57 years old I was looking for a job. It took me a year and a 1/2 to find someone that would hire me, it was the 1st time in my life I ever had trouble finding a job. It was obvious it was due to my age. I had an excellent work record and references. I also was not asking for more money than people with much less experience. I have been at my current job for 4 years now. I work with much younger people , they are always out sick, family drama or have young children that are sick. When they are at work they do very little, mainly play on their phones or spend time talking to one another. I am 61 and work circles around my coworkers , yet I guarantee you if I were to forget something or call out sick or have any sort of issue I would immediately be pegged as being too old for the job . It sickens me the prejudice against my generation who actually work their tails off so no one can say we are getting too old to do the job are discriminated against like we are...

    I worked for 44+ years until I, unfortunately, became a victim of medical malpractice. Because I was not informed of all the damage my body sustained (while I was on a ventilator with hospital-acquired septic shock) until the statute of limitations to sue had expired, I am forced to live in affordable housing that is barely maintained. Even if I had known in time to get justice, finding a lawyer to take a medical malpractice case when you are older, a female, and single is next to impossible as we are viewed as dispensable by society in general. There is little to no advocacy and no 'movement' for the sick and/or elderly. And, due to our worsening health, much based on neglect (or worse) by medicine and this country in general, it gets harder each day to advocate for ourselves. I bought into the lie that retirement would be peaceful and relaxing, filled with family, fun and travel. This is not true for most, and definitely not if you are chronically ill. Because I am divorced, I am also pretty much alone. I live in senior housing that is barely maintained. NO ONE cares about the people who live here, including the people who live here. I am in dire need of dental work, but because I have Medicare, I do not have dental insurance. I do not want a Medicare Advantage (lol...don't you just love the names picked for these programs that are essentially big businesses) plan because I do not need to have my health care managed. I do, however, need access to honest, decent medical and dental care. I suffer daily through no fault of my own. I do not feel safe or protected in this country where I paid taxes for more than 44 years. I am basically just waiting to die. It has been my experience there is no reward for doing good or doing the 'right thing'. Hopefully, God is real and the reward of existing in a loving, peaceful way will come in the afterlife. I know it is not going to happen for me in this one.
    PS. As proof that the elderly do not have access to justice, I point you to what Gov Cuomo did (and got away with) in NYS nursing homes. Many residents died from COVID, reportedly due to his orders. I am personally aware that, in the mid-Hudson Valley there sat a fully equipped (for COVID patients) gymnasium that had been retrofitted to take in 100 COVID patients and had the capacity to add an additional 100 beds (for a total of 200.) Approx one to two miles from this gymnasium, there sat a completely empty (of patients, not beds and equipment) hospital that was scheduled for renovations that had not yet begun. In addition, a military hospital ship sat in the harbor of NYC and it was reportedly never used so it left NYC. So, WHY did so many elderly get sent to nursing homes (without being tested to see if they were still COVID positive) to recover? Its spread was like wildfire. IMO, these residents were murdered, yet cuomo remains governor of NYS. This, to me, shows exactly the level of care and compassion this country has for its elderly. Where is the outrage? Am I alone in thinking this is a disgrace?

It's not always possible to develop a career that goes with age and the reality is that if you haven't got things together by 45 with a retirement plan....the work world can hire youngsters only....bottom line is you are over the hill in your mid thirties in some types of office and hospitality work etc

    I hate to put this out there but many people do not know that they have another option. Dropping out and moving to a much cheaper country and trying to do some remote work is a real option. I live in a spacious 3 bedroom townhouse for $400 that is near the beach. A nice 1 bedroom is $180. I have good internet for $30 a month and cable tv with HBO and ESPN for $9 a month. The point is you can live pretty well on just 2K a month and many expats live on 1K or less. Car insurance is $70 a year. It is $10 to see the doctor or dentist. You don't have to stress about money. And there is very little ageism here. You can be over 60 and date 20 year olds (if you are foolish) and no local thinks ill of you. The bad news is you are half way around the world. But is the US today really a good place to live for those over 55?

    • @jamesrimes2870
      @jamesrimes2870 3 года назад

      Don't those who hire you for remote work know your age tho?
      You still going to have to work for the US. 2k a months is a larger salary for Southeast Asia.

    I wouldn’t let the fact that he’s older bother him to the point of being emotional. There’s nothing anyone can do about aging. If you’ve got valuable skills it’s good to market them in the best way to put you in a role that will balance your lifestyle, and work ethics. I realize I might not be in my direct field of work, but I know something more mature, and not too stressful will do just fine.

    Another thing. Sexual assault isn't taken as seriously once you're over the age of 18.
    I understand that there are more legal charges with child rapists as it's another illegal action added, but let's pretend paedophilia isn't illegal. Assault is assault & it affects everyone just as badly no matter the age. So it should be taken as seriously instead of just fannying around. Even other people who aren't police don't take you seriously when you're 18+ because "you might be lying".

    What is wrong with that?
    Youth means health and vibrancy. Old age means mortality, dispair, dependence, misery.

    • @karamba5089
      @karamba5089 4 года назад +11

      Sad to read this. Those perceptions are a part of the problem. You don’t magically stop enjoying life when you turn certain age and growing old is a part of a human nature even though it’s stigmatised by the society. If if you take care of your health you can still be “vibrant” at old age. The society is so obsessed with youth because of the message sent by all of those beauty companies, fashion industry etc who add up to the anxiety of ageing to profit from it. According to their sick standards people who are not even halfway through their expected life span are considered old. I really hope that you will change your mind as you grow older and realise it’s all BS. I also hope that when that happens, the society will embrace the natural process of ageing instead of putting unnecessary pressure on people or shaming them for something no one can control.
