    Rabbits have really bounced back on one of Mat Manning’s permissions. The burrowing pests are now present in such numbers that they are causing serious damage. Tackling the rabbits with his FX Impact MkII mounted on a bipod, Mat has a busy evening’s shooting and harvests some great free-range meat for the pot while he’s at it.
    Also in this week’s episode, Mat shares some top tips for airgun hunting opportunities during the late spring and early summer months. With squirrels, rats, rabbits, pigeons and corvids all on the list, it’s a busy time of year for airgunners.

    I wish my rabbit control job was as simple as this. I do a golf course, the rabbits are very spread out by hundreds of yards, there's no cover to get close to them, it can take me an entire night from say 9:30pm to 4:00am to just get 3 rabbits and I will be lucky to get a shot under 65 yards and I have to use a sub 12 air rifle.

    • @doomfathertm8771
      @doomfathertm8771 2 года назад +1

      @Broad Side Ive tried it, used everything from ghillie suits to hides, it just doesn't work, you can wait 5 hours and see nothing , the course is so big you never really know where they will be and they are extremely on edge ,any little thing and they are off!! Even the light from my 940nm ir light scares them off sometimes from like 80 yards away lol.

      The tactics I am using here work well on shoots like this where there are high concentrations of rabbits in small areas. Sounds like you are dealing with a much sparser population.
      Scent is something to really watch out for when planning a relatively close-range ambush. A quick shower, with no soap or shampoo, is a good bet in order to lose smells of deodorant and anything else from the human world. You also have to be careful of odours from your home or car getting into your shooting clothes - car air fresheners are to be avoided.

      @@theshootingshow I always try to stay down wind, even if it means walking the entire way around the other side of the golf course just to come from the other side of them to make sure I am down wind. Sometimes even the IR light or the range finder is enough to send them running even if I am still 100 yards or so away. To be honest the job really requires 17hmr. Mike Richardson has pretty much nailed it. This setup is bang on at 20m and at just a shade over 50m. The pellet is striking high between primary and secondary zero and therefore needs hold-under, although only a touch at 45m.

    I enjoy and appreciate the Air Gun Show and have learnt a lot but I wish you would do more with sub 12ft/lb for Rabbits and Pigeons. I understand the advantages of FAC power but I am sure there are many like myself that do all of our hunting with sub 12ft/lb and use field craft to compensate for the lack of power a 30lb FAC gives. Apart from that many of us do not want to go through the hassle of applying for an FAC license (particularly at the moment with all of the problems) and have to have gun cabinets and police visits. I maybe wrong but it does appear the air gun show when shooting Rabbits and Pigeon seems to us far more FAC than sub 12ft/lb.

    • @lensman5762
      @lensman5762 2 года назад +2

      FAC Airgun is not going to provide for longer range shooting over a sub 12, not by much anyway. It is all about killing the target on impact. Most of the shots in the clip were around 30~40 meters. Typical sub 12 ranges. The reaction of the rabbits on impact though, were quite different to sub 12. In the old times I would go deep into ballistics to prove the point, but I am too old now to even bother. An FAC air gun will provide for a much more humane kill than a sub 12.

    • @Shorts-qy5no
      @Shorts-qy5no 2 года назад

      @@lensman5762 I an fairly new to air rifle hunting and I understand you reasoning and appreciate your experience but I can only speak from my own experience to date when shooting Rabbits up to 40 yards with a sub 12ft/lbs. I use a .177 Air Arms Ultimate Sporter R and a HW100KT. From my observations with kills so far if you shoot a Rabbit in the head with even just a 8.44 grain pellet at 40 yards that Rabbit is going down quickly and cleanly and I have had no problems so far. However, with a chest shot (heart/lung) on a Pigeon up a tree definitely the FAC will do the job better therefore, I restrict myself to head and neck shots. As I said I can see the advantages of an FAC but for Rabbits up to 40 yards I do question if it is really necessary and if I was to go for an FAC for Rabbits then I would go for a 17 or 22 rimfire and be able to shoot them at 100 yards.

    • @lensman5762
      @lensman5762 2 года назад

      @@buckrussel3808 Those are also my sentiments. We were given the sub12 without a licence and we grew to learn to use it within its capabilities. This doesn't mean that it is the right tool for the job. At very short ranges, it does the job, but extend the range a little and it starts falling apart. The FAC air rifle is also a much more safe device than either a 17 HMR or the dreaded .22 LR. We shouldn't forget that quite often we shoot within very close proximity of busy roads and human residence or place of work. I maintain that for airgun a separate licence should be issued by the authorities. I have never understood the bunching of a 30 ft.lbs airgun with a 600 ft.lbs center fire, but that is just me.

    • @Shorts-qy5no
      @Shorts-qy5no 2 года назад +1

      @@buckrussel3808 First to stress I am a relative newcomer to air rifle hunting and I appreciate the contributions to my original comment. But all I can say from my experience so far using only sub 12ft/lbs is I have Rabbits in the freezer. I have true wild Wood Pigeons in the freezer and when I say true wild Wood Pigeons I mean those that are very wary of humans and not those that hang around areas where they get used to seeing humans. I also have Grey Squirrels in the freezer and a couple will be eaten tomorrow night. All of these have been shot knowing the limitations I have using a sub 12ft/lbs for example: Making sure either by ambush or stalking that Rabbits are a no more than 40yards (head shots). Setting up in the woods to shoot roosting Wood Pigeons at no more than 30 yards and be mindful of shot placement (head and neck shots and only taking a chest shot at very short range. Shooting Grey Squirrels without the use of a feeder but taking advantage when a Squirrel presents itself within range (head shots). Being mindful of how windy it is and distance. I have to question saying sub 12ft/lbs should be banned as it appears to me sub 12ft/lbs are very affective providing you know the limitations. I am in no way knocking the use of FAC rated air rifles and as I have said I can see to advantages and how they can make it easier however, part of the fun for me is using field craft to compensate for my limitations of a sub 12ft/lbs and the fact that it is not so easy. That said the whole point of my original comment to the Air Gun Show was to ask if Matt (a great presenter) could do more Rabbit and roosting Wood Pigeon shooting with a sub 12ft/lb and show what is required to be successful. Maybe one day I will go down the road of a FAC rated air rifle but at the moment as an amateur air rifle hunter I am enjoying so much the fact that it is not so easy with a sub 12ft/lb and if I have many trips where I am not successful due to those limitations then that’s fine because it makes the successes so much more enjoyable. I would also like to add that there are several RUclips air rifle hunting channels that are highly successful using sub 12ft/lb such as the Corvid Hunter.

    • @BionicRusty
      @BionicRusty Год назад +1

      It’s to do with the scope height from the barrel, i.e. a large’ish gap between scope and barrel.
      Matt explains it below.
      His gun is zeroed at 20 & 50M. The scope height produces an arc of pellet flight between these points and so was hitting high between them.
      Hitting high needs holdunder to get the shot on target. 👍

    Do you know how much drop-off the pellet will have, say over 50 metres? The weather seems to be perfect with little or no wind, so this must increase your accuracy! I tried to bring the video down to 0.25 speed to see if I can get some idea how much the pellet will drop over a gauged distance! I could see a few pellets, but there is little to no drop-off! Are there any figures given for the fx and pellet weight as to what might be expected? Great to see your professional videos with clean and quick kills!

    • @iyziejane
      @iyziejane 2 года назад

      A projectile traveling 300 meters / sec will go 50m in 1/6th of a second. If you shot perfectly horizontal, the projectile would drop 10 - 20 cm by gravity during that 0.167 second travel time (a range to account for projectiles with more or less air resistance). For shooting targets around that fixed range of 50m, you can compensate for this drop with a very small upward angle (1/100th of a degree) above horizontal, which is tuned into the sighting of the scope.

      Have a look at the Gamo and BSA ranges of break-barrel airguns. They do some great guns around that price and we are featuring one in this Thursday's show.
      All the best. Mat

    I know you’re very familiar with this permission Matt ,but I noticed that you took two or three shots which didn’t have any visible backstop,which could be confusing to new shooters to the sport and the fact that you were using an FAC rated rifle as well, if it is at all possible can you point out,for new shooters,the problems of taking this approach to hunting as some of them might feel that it’s okay to take shots like that all the time
    You have been shooting for a long time and know the pitfalls of the sport but newbie shooters don’t,and it’s always a good thing to emphasise safety,especially when non participants are trying to regulate the sport to a point where no-one can enjoy or afford to participate

      That is a very good point. Although this is a very flat field, there are banks rising up around it in the distance - and that is something I should have pointed out.
      All the best. Mat

      @@L.V-Rider not police ,have been watching Matt for three years and have seen him on this perm many times ,but I spotted something he may have missed during editing his video and I felt it was a fair point to bring to his attention, and ask yourself how many new shooter's are watching and do not know how well Matt knows this permission

      This was the first time I felt that a comment would actually be of any use to someone but any reasonable comment seems to have everybody screaming it's some form of policing, instead of complaining about the odd comment why not put your effort into getting the lead ban reversed as that is going to have a bigger and more devastating effect on our sport

    Don’t see the point saying you’re pleased the rabbits are making a strong come back when the reason for the shooting is to knock the numbers down.
