  • I started using these Stillman and Birn sketchbooks last summer after we were settled into our new place and back in Toronto. It was a way to get to know our neighbourhood (again), experiment with a looser style, and make sure I kept up the sketching habit. This was easy thanks to their size and using travel palettes including the one I made myself (that video will pop up).
I've tried the Epsilon (150gsm) smooth, the Zeta (270) smooth and the Beta Cold Press. I think I may go back to the Beta next time. I kinda like how the watercolour flows on that one better although I do like the coloured pencil on the smooth. hmmm...
This 14x9cm or 5.5"x3.5" landscape sketchbook can be bought at Aboveground art supplies in Toronto or here's an affiliate link to Jackson's in the UK. (other sizes are of course available too!)

Hiya Eileen, Thanks very much for taking us on the journey through your sketchbooks. It's a very personal thing for you to do and they are now also important historical documents for future generations to have a glimpse into
your world. Spring is well and truly up and running here In Lancashire , N.W. England and it's been lovely weather recently. It's nearly 8.30 p.m. and the Blackbird is singing his beautiful song high up in the tree outside. He will start again tomorrow morning about 4.30am. Take care Eileen. x

I had a redwing blackbird join me while I was drawing recently. Love them. I love birdsong but 4:30 am not so much. We had a fire alarm go off at that time this morning. Would definitely take birds over that, though. I haven't really travelled in your area of England but I would love to. My family is spread around the UK but not Lancashire. Spring is very late with us this year. We keep getting glimpses of it with odd warm days and then cold again.

How are you liking the Zeta book? Which paper/sketchbook do you prefer?

I do like the Zeta especially if doing a lot of line work or using coloured pencil although I'm not as happy with it for watercolour. I prefer Beta for that. Although I was at the art store on Friday and cheap me went back to the Epsilon as it has more pages than these two. I don't really soak the page so that works just as well.
