Anton Karas was quite the character, and talent, back in the day. I remember hearing that he worked as a zither player in a cafe after the war when Americans came in for lunch. It was the movie director and team. They loved his music so much they asked him to create something for the new movie. He did. It was too short! He had to add a whole "bar" area in The 3rd Man Theme just to appease the movie folks. He was paid so handsomely that he was later able to buy the cafe where he used to play. I call that "well played....." Thank you for loading this set to RUclips for all to enjoy.
Actually, I heard the story that they would not let him fly back home from England before he produced the piece "the third man". He was so homesick for Vienna that he worked hard to finish it and get back home. He never wanted to do that again although he was asked. He did not really like fame. He said with the restaurant he had enough!
Wow what sweet music to tickle my ears! I always remember my parents telling me about this very music! Somewhere in time there's a resurrection of this for all over the world to enjoy and come back to their roots!💛🖤♥️🌹👌👌😁
My husband and I LOVE music from all over the world. We grew up in the Chicagoland area MANY years ago. Chicago broadcasted a TV show called "International Cafe". For YEARS we collected music from all over the planet. We created a playlist for our iPod. The playlist is 20 hours and 38 minutes long. We LOVE it!
Fenomenaln0.Slušao sam citre u Beču, davne 1954 godine. Izvodjač je bio Anton Karas. Velika čast, ne zaborav a uspomena. POMOGLO MI JE NOVINARSTVO, Karas je bio običan čovjek. I danas slušam i uživam. TREĆI ČOVJEK.
Märchenhafte Musik und Stimmen der Instrumente! Wunderschön!!! Meine Stimmung wurde hoch erhoben! Mein Herz taut! Danke !!!Liebe Grüße!!!💝🙋👏🎵🎄👍Walentina.
The first time I ever heard a zither was in that movie. I couldn't get the music or the instrument out of my head. I wanted so badly to play it. Since I was only a child at the time, it was a while before I saw what a zither looked like and how much it cost. Definitely out of the question. I couldnt play anything like that or even afford one. So I had to settle for getting as many recordings as I could. Thank goodness we have people who can play this instrument. What a delight!
Don't think I ever listened to this during my life as an Austrian in Austria. Now, as Canadian and far away from 'home' my heart certainly grew fonder and . . . I actually like it a lot. Thanks for this fine upload ;o)
Very gracious of you to post more, D.H.- What a nice way to meet the business of the New Year than with more from your 1958 issue of Karas & Co. Thanks Again and keep remembering us down here in Texas- A.B.
Thanks for this great music. My Grand daughter is considering learning to play guitar, I'm sending this along to her. Maybe she'll change her mind and learn to play this instrument instead.
Thank you so much for sharing your delightful music! I'm spending many hours listening again and again. Used to dance to most of the songs with performing group at October Fests. Such a grand time and great tunes!
Thank you a lot for posting these excellent Anton Karas tunes! This is such a relaxed and melodious music, just great ... I'd like to be in a Heurigen in Vienna or Lower Austria right now :)
I have always wondered what is wrong with contemporary pop music. I think some time ago I found its main fault: severe deficiency of harmonic "dominant sevenths". In this recording, I especially enjoy Ziehler's "Laendler" - amazing arrangement, and lots of dominant sevenths :-)
GRAN ARTISTA ANTON KARAS....ME RECUERDA MI JUVENTUD…..SALUDOS A LA ETERNIDAD RIP....SALUDOS TAMBIEN A DON MANUEL CASABIANCA DIRECTOR DE RADIO SUDAMERICA EN LO MAS ALTO DEL DIAL CB 154 EN AM..EN CHILE LA UNICA EMISORA QUE DIFUNDIA A ANTON KARAS....GRATOS RECUERDOS...DESDE EL AÑO 64 QUE LA SINTONIZO...SALUDOS......
Absolutely beautiful music that touches my heart. I am also an accordion player and I love zither too. The Landler heard here is so beautiful it makes me want to get up and dance. Thank you so much for posting.
What Austrian isn't called either Rudi or Anton? LOL The Third Man was released when I was about 15. My mother worked as a telephonist for a newspaper co., in Sydney. The theme haunted me so much that I needed to keep ringing her to sing the 1st bars into the phone because I was being driven mad by it. How I loved it!
I grew up in the radio business and always loved the possibilities for the medium. However, in recent years the hours per day that I used to listen to radio are now spent with YT. Why? Simply because it is possible to get music like this while most radio stations play something that is beyond description - and certainly beyond listening. I cannot say too much in support of YT - long may it wave.
We have a station in Prescott, Az. KAHM which plays the sort of music you'd enjoy. They're so popular they offer a subscription over the internet. My mind wonders what would have happened if Mr. Karas had shown up at Woodstock and began playing his wonderful music? It might have changed a good deal of our culture, for the better, I'm thinking.
The zither is just magical! Wonderful music . Love from New Zealand
Wunderbar diese Klaenge🎀🎑🎑🎫
Ah!Anton Karas!Ta musique !Indissociable du film-chef d'œuvre THE THIRD MAN.Pour cela tu appartiens aux Inoubliables !

Thanks for your affirmative reply. Austria was far poorer then, but people there were somehow much happier than now.

Music of the Vienese people, together with the Schrammeln-brothers.
Thank you David, this is absolutely delightful :) And I knew him mostly for The Third Man. Best from Luba (the administrator of the Chopin group) :)

Karas' music fit the movie perfectly! Does "The Third Man Bar" still exist in Vienna?

Totally agree! One of the internet's finest offerings because of music like this.

How can you argue with that?
😊🌷
Whose the one with the zither, you know, "The Third Man"?
