    Something I really enjoy about you Sam is you just don't stop. You're a true adventurer. A lot of the sailing 'tubers have a habit of going somewhere (South Pacific comes to mind) and tending to stay there and let the barnacles grow - and why not, it is the literary ideal of paradise - but for you I think the action is the sailing, and that is really infectious.

    I'm very familiar with beach cats having owned a Hobie 16 and 18 and currently own a Boston Whaler Supercat 17, a boardless cat, (no centerboards). First, the rudders shouldn't pop up to their locked position so when they do pop up, you can still steer, even when both pop up. So I don't think you need any mods on your rudders, but it's your boat! Next, with beach cats, when they get a hull failure, it's right in front of the front cross bar, right where you cut out the very much stronger top deck. If I were you, I'd make some wooden structure pieces and lay some glass over them going from behind the hole to in front of the hole to bring some strength back. Just imagine the hull folding in somewhere along the cutout and build structure for that. There's videos on RUclips showing hull failures in this area. When it happens, one side will kind of just fold in. It's sad! Good luck!!

    • @bbrockert
      @bbrockert Год назад

      Yeah I was really hoping to see some reinforcement after the huge holes were cut, you can just imagine those walls flexing out and the hull just folding. But now I'm wondering if we'll even see this boat again, or if it's a month with the new free sailboat before heading back to Pickled Herring, and the structural stability of this boat becomes Somebody Else's Problem.

    Looks like she is coming along Sam. I must admit I let out a scream when you cut holes for your deck hatches. I raced cats for 20 years and when they are screaming along under high winds and big seas, a great deal of the load is carried by the exact spot you cut. I expect quite a bit of flex there now so watertight will be a lot more challenging I expect. Hoping I and wrong but...
    Best wishes!

  • @WillN2Go1

    Good use of the pool cage screen. I made dog beds out of heavy duty 'pet' screen for doors and windows. I've also replaced sagging mesh office chair seats with it. You could probably make a front trampoline with it. It's remarkable strong and holds up well to UV
    I've made and bought a few super lightweight silnylon rain flys - you always want to run a support line for it to drape over (so the string (usually dyneema) line is under a lot of tension but the fly is not pulled as tight (I attach the fly to the tension line with prusisk knots) And I'd make that fly so either side could be pulled down on whatever is the windward side (unless of course your at anchor or moored, then the rain would blow from the front.) If you can drop two sides you can be protected from most weather.

    • @samholmessailing
      @samholmessailing  Год назад +6

      Yes i did make a front trampoline out of it. Its great stuff. I also made the pipe berth on my cape dory out of the same sort of stuff. Very strong and uv resistant. I saved a ton of it for future projects

    the hatch right next to the main beam saddle is risky. I broke a Nacra 5.5 right there while racing and the hull sank so fast it was amazing. Of course I still had one hull remaining but if I had been anywhere but the ICW it could have been a real setback... You should reinforce the inside of the hulls around the cutout area perimeter with like 3 plies of 4 inch tape FG cloth.

    • @mboyer68
      @mboyer68 Год назад +1

      I just left a similar comment, said imagine the hull folding in right where the cutouts are, and add strength to combat that, because that's where they fail. When I watched the video and the saw came out I was like NOOOOO not there!!!!

    • @mailbagps
      @mailbagps Год назад +3

      @@mboyer68 absolutely right. well Sam apparently is not one to hesitate to drill and cut away on a boat or add weight in odd locations. I like this cat you are working with and that mainsail looks good. The side pieces you added to get a level surface for the hatch are a good location to run some hefty longitudinal reinforcement if it was to extend beyond the hatch opening several inches and scarfing to thin laminate. Use some unidirectional glass reinforcement there Sam.

    i would be very careful about cutting holes near the forward cross beam as there are a lot of loads there . i have seen a brand new Hobie miracle 20 bow break just forward of the cross beam. i would test the boat in rough conditions close to home before i took it on a trip like you have planned. The mystere catamarans are pretty stiff boats and i have never seen one of those fail at the crossbeam but none have been modified . Most of them sail off the Dunedin causeway 7 miles north of clearwater . A guy i new started sailing and selling them in that area quite a few years back. The causeway is a great place to launch from for trailerable sailboats as you can back your car and trailer right to the water and launch right from the beach. videos of the area can be seen at andrea frees youtube channel. we sail a windrider 17 from there when we go down to florida . plus there is a restroom and shower there as well as a Tiki Bar on the beach
