-Released as a promotional single for their fourth studio album “10,000 days”.
-Became Tool’s first number one song, topping Billboard Mainstream Rock chart in 2007 and received a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2008.
-According to Adam Jones, it is confirmed to be about hypocrisy and is a double entendre that refers to both drug intoxication and believing oneself to be above others, deriving from the phrase “the pot calling the kettle black”.
-Reportedly, a music video for the song was filmed during the holiday season in 2006 but it has never surfaced.

Maynard gets tons of ink for his voice, his lyrics, his eccentricities, if you will, and Danny is a contender for the G.O.A.T. on drums, but Justin and Adam never get their just due, and I'm assuming it's because they are both such social media introverts. But each member writes their own parts separately, they are coming up with those bass lines and those insane riffs. Give them love, folks!

Yeah it’s honestly the PERFECT song. From vocals, bass, drums, engineering, the background guitar and slow build ups and shifting in tone as Maynard gets legitimately emotional in the song. That’s not even talking about the vocal skills, switching, runs, riffs and breath control. It’s like honestly on the Mount Rushmore of top 4 best Rock songs imo.

I've posted this before on Tool reviews, but as a teen in the 90s Tool just had this next level mysticism and aura. Their music felt too mature to me compared to regular rock. Cool to see the next generations experiencing it, especially during a time when this kind of music isn't mainstream.

only better thing than hearing T for the first time is seeing others hearing them for the first time - last week blasted this one for a friend, first timer, while snapping through the black hills in SD on the way to a storm chase :) his face. yessss

Great work, I know it took a ton of time to edit that! Been listening to Tool for a long time, but seeing people's reactions has been awesome. Just listened to The Pot on a high end sound system at a crazy volume... it was like hearing the song for the first time. Holy cow. If you ever get a chance, do it.

Tool live story. The medicine show…92 ish at The Palladium, Hollywood. Alice and Chains headlines.
Acoustic show mostly so we are expecting mellow. Maynard is screaming “this is necessary” over and over while the drums and bass boom da da boom da da boom for what seemed like 5 minutes until everyone is like what the hell…. Maynard turns back to the drum riser and grabs a shotgun and starts firing off rounds into the rafters (obviously blanks) but talk about awesome. I’ll never forget the first time I ever saw Tool.

Why it’s imo the best song ever made 100/100 (yes, even compared to Beatles/Zeppelin/Marvin/Floyd):
I love this song so much because it’s succinct… they don’t waste a single millisecond of this. Every aspect of the song is necessary to get over the full arc of the emotional story they’re trying to tell. It’s literally a perfect song. Not to mention that Maynard’s vocals are so dynamic, non-repeating, non-derivative, purposeful, intelligent, brilliant. This song is a perfect blend of just vibing to the sounds and intellectually divkng into the individual instrumentation and sonic landscape. I think in order for a song to be truly great it must strike a balance between emotion and mind which I think is where the soul exists..
Btw I would also argue there are a few dozen songs between the 99.9-100 range, and possibly a couple songs that are also 100s like: Time - Pink Floyd, Strawberry Fields - Beatles, Heroin - Velvet Underground, Lithium - Nirvana
