That Rocket vs Plasma arc trailer is really a very interesting look at what could’ve been, it’s just sad all the animated footage would be forever lost to time

What I don't get is why they cut the episode completely. Okay the destruction is related to the destruction in real life. Why not take the anime off air for a while and correct the episode? Remove the destruction. It's so odd to completely cut an episode.
Worth pointing out that as far as the dub for the Team Rocket/Team Plasma two parter was concerned, Tom Wayland (the voice director for the dub at that time) confirmed on Twitter back in 2013 that DuArt actually got the materials for dubbing the episode but they ended up not doing so.
I recall reading somewhere (can't recall where), that Ash was supposed to win the Sinnoh League and then we'd get someone new for Unova onwards, but then higher ups rejected the idea.
I mean that would make actual sense considering the only reason Ash lost the Sinnoh League was because they creates a Deus Ex Machina character to beat him with his team of legendaries.
Assuming this is real... Dang... From what I've heard, higher ups from The Pokemon Company were watching every word Masuda and Ohmori say in their interviews. Seriously, what's going on with TPC...
Oh yeah, I remember this tragedy. The trailer fo this arc was really awesome, but unfortunatelly Mother Nature had another plans for it. It hurts to know, that if this arc exist, we would probably have way more complex plot with Team Plasma which could potentially be as good as Team Galactic or Team Flare plot, and way better pacing for the series, especially for the last yeat, since we wouldn`t have a 20 episodes of fillers until XY. I doubt, that it will change things like Ash`s soft-reset, but it still bad. From what I heard originally it supposed for Pikachu to learn Electroball here, and not in this dumb Ducklett episode (may be wrong, since it already happen before). Oshawott also supposed to evolve into Dewott, which never happen. It`s sad.
It's not Mother Nature's fault though. They could still aired this episode. They could have waited a few weeks or something. They ruined the anime on their own. I felt like this forever effected the anime because other evil teams only really do things at end of the series instead of throughout.
Team Skull appeared in the first episode if I'm correct but they don't matter. They literally don't. Guzma has some shallow ideal about destruction and all he does is the tournament. The Aether Foundation gets an arc but it's very early in the anime, it might even be before it actually happens in the game. Nebby does not have the same connection they had with Lillie in the games. It felt rushed in my opinion. Things go back to normal. Even the trial captains were taken out. Not sure why they thought any of this was a good idea.
I didn't even know about this arc when I first started watching black and white. Only after I saw they skipped the episodes and saw what the original team plasma was like (I played black and white 2 first) did I have some interest in seeing what they originally planned
I tolerated Iris and Emolga, I raised an eyebrow at Ash's Pikachu losing to a starter Snivy, but what drove me over the edge on Best Wishes (and subsequently made me skip X&Y until I heard it was great) was the choices they made in the Pokemon League. Ash sending out an Oshawott with basically only water type moves against a Hydreigon, Ash losing against a trainer who forgot to bring his sixth pokemon, the anime setting up this awesome Eeveelution rival who Ash never even gets to face. Gahhhh!
This series is the one that almost made me give up on the anime, with me only deciding to watch XY just to see if they could bounce back. Ash and Pikachu were treated like crap, the writing took a huge nose dive ranging from pretty good to god awfully bad at worst. Then there's Trip and Cameron, Trip is a Paul knock off with none of what made him a good rival and is also horribly inconsistent sometimes he's nice, sometimes he's a jerk, sometimes he's a jerk but has a soft side. Then Cameron is all of Unova's mistakes rolled into one character and that's why people get so pissed that Ash loses to this guy, it's literally as if the writers slapped the fans who spoke up about the poor treatment right in the face. Also Diamond and Pearl may have been longer but ALOT more stuff was going on in terms of character development and story arcs. The Ash and Paul stuff and all the layers on it was there from start to finish. We had Dawn's losing streak and needing to get her confidence back in addition to the contest stuff. The usual gym plot along with the Team galactic arc, all of these things were smartly written and made me really invested to keep watching where as Black and white's first season frustrated me to no end consistently with only a handful of episodes being good until around the third gym.

I definitely liked Best Wishes at first but as I got older I soon realized all of the flaws present in that series. Especially after X and Y blew Best Wishes out of the water.

@@DigiRangerScott Plus we didn't even see Serena train. She just won them because she was given lame excuses of pokemon. Specifically Eevee and pancham which were already talented dancers. And the rivals were simply just....there. No personality and character whatsoever. The only good thing there is the animation. That's it.
I actually liked watching team rocket be successful every now and then I didn’t like best wishes in general but I got excited when they wore their black uniforms cause they were successful in getting something done
I didn't like Iris, so even if they hadn't scrapped the episode I wouldn't have liked Best Wishes. What's more Ash's...lobotomy was seriously frustrating, especially after how well he did in the Sinnoh League.
It's a fine example to why I said Ash should have been replaced by now. If they used a different protagonist for Best Wishes, people would have sang a different tone.
Colress being a bad scientist was the only good thing in the "N arc"... Generation 5 games are meybe the bast games of the series... and the BW anime was unfortunately a tragedy...
What really drove me away from Best Wishes was the characters themselves, at this point I was more interested in the characters rather then how the anime went. And within the first few episodes were they introduced Iris, Oshawat, and how they made Ash act immediately made me lose interest in the show
I have heard that Oshawott was even supposed to evolve during the Plasma two-parter, so most likely we wouldn't have had to deal with its annoying attitude anymore. I honestly hate that this series was so heavily rewritten because it might have turned out to be something great if it weren't for that one damn incident.
@@decoral lol Oshawott always seemed divisive from even pre-launch. He's actually one of the reasons I loved this one so much. Always loved Oshawott since the starters in 5th gen were revealed, and loved his anime character/personality.
I'm surprised that over in Japan they think it's normal to throw people's hard work in the trash like this. What's keeping them from putting those episodes on DVD and slapping a huge warning label on the box to keep oversensitive people from buying it?
3 words: Electric Soldier Porygon. One of the most infamous moments in TV history that led to over 100 kids getting seizures in Japan. Ever since that controversy the Pokemon anime has been very adamant about making sure nothing that horrific ever happens again when associated with their brand.

Well, Im sure they wanted to keep It, but that earthquake was so bad, and killed so many people that Im sure people would hate Pokémon Best Wishes, and I think canceling the project and forgetting about It was probley their best oppinion, not a good one, but probley the best one.
@@IllustrativeArts836 I think the best solution would be to release a public warning that the events of the episodes don't have any asscociation with the incident, because they were created *BEFORE IT OCCURRED* and air the episodes regularly. And to be honest, they really didn't have that much in common aside from the damage caused to Castelia. The actual incident was an earthquake, whereas in the anime it was a fricking meteorite exploding with energy.
I remember when I first found out about this as unfortunate as it was, it kinda frustrated when I found out Ash's Oshawott was supposed to evolve in that episode too, they postpone the catching of crocorock, but not the evolution of Oshawott?
I doubt it, most of the following episodes were already made, so Oshawott's capture and Krokorok's capture were most definitely not going to happen here
I believe they decided to keep it an oshawott to better fit tonal shift the series went through after the earthquake since he was a comedic relief character at that point and dewott are known for being discipline and serious.
Oh man I remembered this whole incident and how it affected the series back then. It surely was confusing. Yet I still enjoyed whatever new stories they come up with after the disaster. But the series did went really stale later on. Thankfully Pokemom XY and XYZ came after that.
BuizelCream Yeah, thankfully, Sun and Moon eventually came, because XY was as bad if not worse than BW. Say what you want about the Sun and Moon animé, but it wasn’t boring (and Ash won the league in the end, na na na na na... My brain is 3 years old, that’s terrible).
I liked the tournament arcs of best wishes, but that's about it. I have almost complete contempt for the series, especially with how they handled ash's character and his progression to becoming a strong Trainer.
Gen 7: Game mechanics slightly an improvement from Gen 6, but the 2nd most hated Pokemon anime (Alolan League was too rushed, never forget the controversial Ash vs Hau episode). Also the beginning of Pokemon Movies that didn't have a current connection with Gen 7.
@@firisrozley5768 Are you even serious? While I could agree that the "Battle Royale" was meh in execution, you are completely wrong about the rest. The Alola league was 17 episodes long, every single battle mattered, was shown in detail, there are strong character motivations and some of the most epic fights of the whole series. If there's a rushed and controversial league, it's Kalos' hands down. Only two fights were important, they were mostly just showing the Greninja form in a bland way, and the entire thing was overhyped for nothing.

How abt the fact that even a Japanese Pokemon-related variety show already reveal a screenshot spoiler of Satoshi (Ash) holding Alola League trophy, accidentally or not to the point that the official Pokemon YT channel has turned off comments?
Best Wishes also gave the most contrived way to cut down Pikachu’s power level, a literal deus ex machina as far as Zekrom’s standing in the Pokemon world. While this would have likely been intended to pay off in the Team Rocket vs Team Plasma arc, it comes off a way to balance Pikachu for a new region as well as evoke Ash starting out regions by sighting a legendary.
I had come back to the anime after having mostly dropped off since AG, since I had really loved the games and had heard some interesting things about the faster pace and Zekrom foreshadowing. It had a bit of a controversial start with Pikachu losing to Snivy, but I accepted it as Ash getting knocked off his rhythm, no big. And I agree that whatever they had planned for us was completely derailed by the earthquake and everything else that happened as result. I kept trying to keep interest, but eventually gave up due to Ash's treatment, the filler, etc., and Cameron/TP made me drop the anime entirely until the MegaEvo specials got me watching XY. It really is unfortunate what happened to this series, but it's clear that they worked hard to set things right with XY and SM, altho in different ways.
The thing about "A Venipede Stampede!" was that, in the original airing, Ash and company boarded the helicopter with Professor Juniper, but when the dub aired it, they cut out the parts of Ash and co. tagging along, implying that Juniper left all by herself.

@@wikiuser92 like they could have just censored the extremely violent parts or left a warning saying "this might b upsetting to some people so don't watch if these affect u" But no they had to axe them. No earthquake even occurred in the specials themselves so how could an earthquake be much of a reason to axe this? They started something, there should have been little to no excuse on finishing it
What I enjoyed: many Pokemon captures again, actually having a different partner, a bit faster paced than DP. What I didn't: Iris taunting Ash for being immature when she's pretty immature herself (sure Misty does this, but it felt that Misty does have times that she is responsible), Trip being discount Paul, characters that repeat their tropes and catchphrases a bit too much for my liking, Team Rocket being too serious rather than what they feel like in XY or even New Series which has more balance, and just an aura of soms obnoxiousness throughout the series IMO. I enjoyed it enough but it felt like a step back from DP that while enjoyable and in hindsight wasn't really that bad is one of the weakest series of the animé for me.

Iris honestly did improve later in the series when the writers realized the audience didn't like her attitude lol, but Trip is JUST...thrash. Complete thrash. They saw the success of Paul so they made Paul2 and it couldn't have worked worse. Especially when Cheren was RIGHT THERE. After DP I would honestly be fine with Ash having a less intense rivalry for once, but NO, they just had to give us Trip. The situation becomes even worse when you realize that instead of Trip, we could have gotten Cheren and Bianca as Ash's main rivals, and have THEM battle with Ash acting as the battle judge, instead of Ash battling(and losing) to Trip and his Level 5 Snivy in the infamous episode. And don't even get me started on the Unova League.

Honestly I grew up with the gen 5 anime so my nostalgia goggles keep me from seeing too many flaws.....but even I don’t understand Pikachu losing to that Snivy smh
I guess im in the minority that enjoyed 5th Gen. The games, the number of Pokemon there were, the mechanics, the music. And the anime was my personal favorite. It was like a reboot of Gen 1. So many favorite episodes I have of gen5 anime. Yeah I didn't like the Unova league arc either but the N arc made up for it.
I’m gonna say this, I know it’s not exactly relevant now but, Whatever you think of the black and white anime series, you have to except the fact that they learned from there mistakes and they didn’t give up. they chose to get better, and that’s what made X and Y and the Sun and Moon anime so great. they learned from there mistakes and it’s easy to see, they took concepts from BW and used them in XY and SM, for example, not having team rocket in every episode is a concept they took from BW and have done it ever since. I say this about the original series all the time, the original series was garbage, all the concepts they did in the original series (first 5 seasons of the show) were executed very poorly for the first 5 seasons, but they learned from there mistakes there and the advanced series was a step up, and they took it one step further and learned from the advanced series and that’s why the Diamond and Pearl anime was phenomenal and why it’s considered the best series before BW, the DPP anime wasn’t perfect but darn near. They shifted to a more story focused show when BW started, it was like soft rebooting the show by beginning a brand new style of writing, which was both a good and bad idea. it was good so the show wouldn’t become stale, but bad because there first attempt, just like the original series first attempt wasn’t the greatest, but either way they learned from there mistakes back then in 1998 and again in 2010, and we are in the golden age of the Pokémon anime where SM anime is amazing and the new gen 8 anime series is still story focused like always which is a better way to write a show. That’s what I take away from it.
This was actually, or at least quite possibly, my favorite era in the Pokemon series. I loved 5th gen - the Pokemon, especially the starters, the cast, etc. It was also in a pivotal time in my life though, marking the end of an era for me personally and moving into family life which ended up awful, and pretty much ruined my life. Looking back at the excitement in 2010 and early 2011/2012 before things got bad for me - Best Wishes/5th Gen was a wonderful retreat in my memories and still is a pleasant time to remember for me. I'll always have that attachment to this gen.
I remember that I tried to pick the pokemon anime back up with Best Wishes, and I saw how it was promising...but then it fell from grace as you described. That said, I've given the anime another chance yet again with the newest series, which will be verging on 15 episodes as of writing this, so hopefully it doesn't suffer the same fate as its predecessors...
The worst thing I find from Best Wishes was right at the end where they decided to write Tracey out of making any appearances despite having him in the intro for DA! They say he went to help Misty at the Cerulean Gym, and then when we go back to Kanto in Sun/Moon he is absent from both Oak's lab *and* the Cerulean Gym... Pretty terrible way to write a main character out, they really should've fleshed him out better
The highlight of BW was The Team Rocket Trio acting serious and competent and Giovanni FINALLY taking an active role in the anime and confronting Ash for the first time. Shame it did not last.
The only thing I can think of that saved best wishes was ash bringing Charizard, Ash and Professor Oak reminding us that he still has his old Pokémon like swellow, staraptor, Bulbasaur, and Tauros, and Alexa being introduced to bring hype to gen 6. But in my opinion what killed best wishes was ash’s incompetence, lack of a Strong new Pokemon, and the Unova league.
I really wish that after they didn’t do the arc, that they would move it to XY. XY was the most serious anime so far, and it really could’ve worked. Replace Team Flare with Plasma, and the power thing with Zygarde (cell form) and boom, you got a story.
Last year when Twitch marathoned Pokemon and messed up the schedule horribly for the 2nd half (going from a season per week Kanto-Hoenn to a season per DAY starting with Sinnoh) I decided to watch it on my own time with the format Twitch used for the first half, and Best Wishes was legitimately so bad I couldn't bring myself to finish it. As a kid I stopped early early gen 4 for the anime, but I LOVED experiencing gen 4's anime for the first time watching it in this marathon. Then got to Best Wishes and just immediately turned off by it, most days I had to force myself to watch the episodes rather than WANT to watch them. I nearly made it through too, I got to that stretch of 20 or so filler eps between the Unova League finishing & Ash departing for Kalos but just unfortunately was never able to push through that last bit of Best Wishes
Well Best Wishes! started some tropes that still continue into the XY Series, the Sun & Moon Series and the New Series such as the Team Rocket Trio appearing less often, the Nurse Joys and Officer Jennies getting redesigned, the art style changing, Giovanni getting a new attire and the new music changing.
After ash's BS loss in sinnoh I wanted to drop the series. I told myself give it one more go then Pikachu loss to a shivy...Pikachu who knew Volt-tackle...VOLT-TACKLE. I was so confused and just as upset as when ash loss the sinnoh league. Then they said he was still 10 years old and I realized I just out grew the anime 😔(and I was still in their primaryage demographic) . Like why could he not just be like 12 or 13 I dont think it would have made much a difference and things wouldn't be so confusing. Even if the show is supposed to be for kids how can dora the explorer (went from 7-10 through the show) age and not ash. I was thinking of giving it another go but I have heard how kalos was a repeat of sinnoh, and I saw how poorly written ash winning in alola was done...
It's unfortunate because this was the generation i officially got into Pokemon. But due to how the anime was handled gen 5 got a bad reputation amongst the fanbase.

I personally enjoyed everything of Best Wishes in Japanese. The episodes, movies and even the songs. One of my favorite episodes is still the Bouffalant one because of Tsutarja's reaction to having to wear an affro (Snivy in English). Also Best Wishes had the awesome Pokérap for gen 5, the English one simply existed and sucks in comparison
I know people might hate me for this, but personally, the Gen 5 anime is my favorite Pokémon anime. Great characters (Cilan for example), great Pokemon (like Oshawott), awesome and funny battles, and just good episodes overall. I’m probably saying this cuz it was my first Pokémon anime, but still, I love it so much. P.S. please come back Cilan I miss you...
This always was really depressing. The Pokemon Black & White anime would have been so good if they didn't have to retcon everything, causing the whole thing feel like a mess. They've assured that the episode was meant to air at one point and that they've been postponed, which is completely understandable. But then it was fully scrapped in complete silence. It's a shame that it will always feel like a sour point in the anime because of that, regardless if you had good or bad opinions on the series. It also led to people praising XY, but it's really not fair to compare due to this entire rewriting. XY managed to do things better, but by taking stuff from both the Black/White and the Sun/Moon games in the Flare arc. Also, notice how each main character had a reason to oppose Team Plasma. Ash loves Pokemon, Iris grew with them and Cilan studies their relationship with humans. I feel like all of this was meant to come into play, but never did because they ended up having BW2 Plasma. I'm not sure if Ash was meant to capture Krokorok in the desert. That could explain why he didn't appear for 30+ episodes at the time, but I don't think there's good proof of that. It's the same kind of case as thinking Cilan was meant to keep the Basculin from the other postponed episode. As for Decolore Islands, it wasn't fully useless: Ash met Alexa and learns about Kalos, allowing him to visit it. Iris met Clair, which led to her interest in fighting her to learn more about Dragon types.
For those who wonder about what I mean by taking stuff from other games: Black/White: the evil organization reveals and makes its most major and awaited move right after a league winner is declared. All of the region's gym leaders show up and reunite their strenght to help on the defeat of the team. Sun/Moon: Blonde girl adopts a baby Legendary Pokémon who lives in her bag and has to learn more about it in order to return it to its home. A shady organization needs said Pokemon for their own ulterior motives and pursues them. The Legendary reaches its final form and delivers the finishing blow to the main villain.
I actually love black & white I grew up watching it & whlist it's not the greatest series I think it's decent series with cool moments like team rocket plots & episode N arc I actually like soft reboot thing it made the show fresh for me at least

Well I liked Beste Wishes except the league. But compaired to other seasons the in between parts not focused on Gyms and so on I really enjoyed. The interactions between the Pokemon were some of my personal favoirites and since that were the majority of episodes I had a good time. Ironicaly in XY that swaped. I didn't like the in between parts but the battles were great. So to me it comes down to what I want at the moment. If I want good fights Best Wishes is not the place to look at. But just having fun watching Pokemon do stuff I think Best Wishes does it really well. Thats why I like Ashs team they were fun to watch. In Kalos I really only enjoyed watching Goomy and sometimes the others.
The first series of Pokemon Best wishes/ Black and White is all mess up because originally Team Rocket Jessia and James were in Black uniform and now they've gone back to to White uniform half way throught the episodes doesn't make sense. The same goes for the two parts episodes postones of Team Rocket VS Team Plasma that never aired since then or explain what has happen to the ancient rock they Team Rocket stole. So yeah this whole first deries of Pokemon Best wishes/ Black and White has gone down the drain.
You know I've been trying to understand why some people don't like Cilan (other than his catchphrase) and I think I know why now: he is a connoisseur of almost every job imaginable which means he has no real goal to obtain which also means he has no arc to go through to get to his non existent goal unlike characters such as Brock, Dawn, May and even Tracey had a goal, also for being an A class connoisseur, he has really bad taste in pokemon I mean, he has a freakin stunfisk for Arceus sake!
Regardless of what happened we should have still gotten the original team plasma arc. They could have easily just dialed back on the violent stuff and there was no point having all that buildup just to throw it away like that. Plus it looked more epic, grand and imposing than what we later got
I remember when it first came out I was really excited for Best Wishes because with two new companions neither of which were based on the player character from the games it felt like a fresh start. However, the biggest problem is Ash himself that holds this series down.
It was Johto all over again, they had planned a story but a sudden event changed their plans and we got lots of filler that go nowhere instead. For Johto it was movie 4, starring Celebi, so the GS Ball was stuffed forever; and for Unova, it was a tragic earthquake.
There was a substantial rewrite due to the loss of Team Plasma early on, yes. But those "30 filler episodes" (several of which were not filler at all) you mention were already made and going to air even if the 3/11/11 disaster hadn't transpired. You can't just hastily cobble together episodes on the fly the way you mistakenly believe happened; that ain't how animation works.
You also forgot to mention that Tom Wayland a former director of the english dub stated in a Tweet from either 2012 or 2013 that the Team Rocket vs. Team Plasma two parter episodes where sent over to the dubbing company in America but at the time when the disasters hit Japan the dubbing of these episodes stopped plus he stated that he seen the episodes.
It's really sad that the BW Anime could've been one of the best Pokemon Series, but one tragic event changed everything. I want to believe that there's an alternate universe out there where the BW Anime succeeded, followed by an even stronger XY Anime.
Anybody remember the weird/creepy meloetta side plot where they capture everybody and try to rule the world by abusing her song-powers? I may be misremembering it, but that legit scared me when I was little.
It really is a damn shame how lackluster Black and White turned out to be by the end. I remember liking it quite a bit when I was younger, but then slowly turning away from it as it went on. It wasn’t helped by the fact that I ended up hating XY and the first half of SM. It had so much potential that will sadly probably never be realized due to the fact that Pokémon is kind of allergic to looking back at the fifth generation, and the 2019 series has no continuity whatsoever. It really sucks

You know what, I'm gonna say it. I don't care how much backlash I'm gonna get for saying this, but I'm gonna say it. I like the best wishes anime more than I like the x and y anime. There, I said it and I'm not taking back.
I just hate how they handled some of the characters! Especially Skyla. In the video games she is a total sweetheart,cares about everybody and so much more! In the anime she is arrogant, unlikable, and a total snob! It's like they made her do a 180 and it's very upsetting especially for a long time Skyla/gen 5 fan! I prefer the video games! No offense to anyone who likes the anime! And I remember when I heard about that horrible Tsunami and Earthquake! It was very upsetting to hear about it! We were playing a Pokemon Battle Revolution Tournament we had at a game shop for fun when we got the news. I stopped playing a bit for a moment of silence and prayed for Japan! Our Church prayed for them as well! Hearing about it broke all of our hearts! :'(
Worst season, I hate Iris so much, she was very annoying and every time she says to Ash he was a little kid. I don't know but I prefer May or Dawn than Iris
One particular issue, of the MANY issues, that I've had with Best Wishes as a whole was the fact that the writers had the need to give everybody a rival and crammed too many characters in the mix to the point where they feel like annoying one offs that serve no purpose than to add artificial development for the main cast. I can't even remember their names aside from bootleg Paul (Trip) and that one guy where they play the 'always get the name wrong' gag (Stephan). Also, let me just say that Cilan is probably the most annoying character to ever exist in the anime. He basically turns any episode into what I can only describe as Dora the freaking Pokemon connoisseur. "IT'S EVALUATION TIME!" will forever describe his character and I hate it everytime he says it. Why is he a connoisseur for everything? He can be the connoisseur of my rear end for all I know. Another problem is the Pokemon Ash has and how little development they get throughout the series. He caught a little more than average so he has less time to train them up compared to previous seasons. Just from personal taste I kinda don't like many of the Pokemon Ash had throughout the journey, (My most hated being Pignite for looks and Oshawott for annoyance). Snivy, Krookodile, and Boldore are exceptions for likeness, but even then his team kinda felt weak sauce compared to his power House of gen 4 lineup. It's just my opinion, but BW is my least favorite Pokemon season and almost made me gave up on the anime all together. Thankfully, XY & XYZ did make up for it, even if it had its own issues.
That Venipede episode and the Team Plazma 2 parter. Back when we all thought the BW anime was gonna be good, then it turned to garbage after that epic Team Plazma arc was cancelled. I’m truly disappointed.

the unfortunate earthquake. willing to bet it would've been so much better if what they were animating wasn't so close to the tragedy that unfortunately happened.
What I don't get is why they cut the episode completely. Okay the destruction is related to the destruction in real life. Why not take the anime off air for a while and correct the episode? Remove the destruction. It's so odd to completely cut an episode.

Worth pointing out that as far as the dub for the Team Rocket/Team Plasma two parter was concerned, Tom Wayland (the voice director for the dub at that time) confirmed on Twitter back in 2013 that DuArt actually got the materials for dubbing the episode but they ended up not doing so.
Yeah I always found that interesting considering other voice actors say they never considered dubbing other banned/skipped episodes.

I recall reading somewhere (can't recall where), that Ash was supposed to win the Sinnoh League and then we'd get someone new for Unova onwards, but then higher ups rejected the idea.
I mean that would make actual sense considering the only reason Ash lost the Sinnoh League was because they creates a Deus Ex Machina character to beat him with his team of legendaries.

Oh yeah, I remember this tragedy. The trailer fo this arc was really awesome, but unfortunatelly Mother Nature had another plans for it. It hurts to know, that if this arc exist, we would probably have way more complex plot with Team Plasma which could potentially be as good as Team Galactic or Team Flare plot, and way better pacing for the series, especially for the last yeat, since we wouldn`t have a 20 episodes of fillers until XY. I doubt, that it will change things like Ash`s soft-reset, but it still bad. From what I heard originally it supposed for Pikachu to learn Electroball here, and not in this dumb Ducklett episode (may be wrong, since it already happen before). Oshawott also supposed to evolve into Dewott, which never happen. It`s sad.

It's not Mother Nature's fault though. They could still aired this episode. They could have waited a few weeks or something. They ruined the anime on their own.

Team Skull appeared in the first episode if I'm correct but they don't matter. They literally don't. Guzma has some shallow ideal about destruction and all he does is the tournament.
The Aether Foundation gets an arc but it's very early in the anime, it might even be before it actually happens in the game. Nebby does not have the same connection they had with Lillie in the games. It felt rushed in my opinion. Things go back to normal. Even the trial captains were taken out. Not sure why they thought any of this was a good idea.
I didn't even know about this arc when I first started watching black and white. Only after I saw they skipped the episodes and saw what the original team plasma was like (I played black and white 2 first) did I have some interest in seeing what they originally planned
I tolerated Iris and Emolga, I raised an eyebrow at Ash's Pikachu losing to a starter Snivy, but what drove me over the edge on Best Wishes (and subsequently made me skip X&Y until I heard it was great) was the choices they made in the Pokemon League. Ash sending out an Oshawott with basically only water type moves against a Hydreigon, Ash losing against a trainer who forgot to bring his sixth pokemon, the anime setting up this awesome Eeveelution rival who Ash never even gets to face. Gahhhh!

This series is the one that almost made me give up on the anime, with me only deciding to watch XY just to see if they could bounce back. Ash and Pikachu were treated like crap, the writing took a huge nose dive ranging from pretty good to god awfully bad at worst. Then there's Trip and Cameron, Trip is a Paul knock off with none of what made him a good rival and is also horribly inconsistent sometimes he's nice, sometimes he's a jerk, sometimes he's a jerk but has a soft side. Then Cameron is all of Unova's mistakes rolled into one character and that's why people get so pissed that Ash loses to this guy, it's literally as if the writers slapped the fans who spoke up about the poor treatment right in the face.
Also Diamond and Pearl may have been longer but ALOT more stuff was going on in terms of character development and story arcs. The Ash and Paul stuff and all the layers on it was there from start to finish. We had Dawn's losing streak and needing to get her confidence back in addition to the contest stuff. The usual gym plot along with the Team galactic arc, all of these things were smartly written and made me really invested to keep watching where as Black and white's first season frustrated me to no end consistently with only a handful of episodes being good until around the third gym.

I definitely liked Best Wishes at first but as I got older I soon realized all of the flaws present in that series. Especially after X and Y blew Best Wishes out of the water.
It has some flaw but was more intresting to keep watching for every episode for its time.

And the rivals were simply just....there. No personality and character whatsoever. The only good thing there is the animation. That's it.

I didn't like Iris, so even if they hadn't scrapped the episode I wouldn't have liked Best Wishes. What's more Ash's...lobotomy was seriously frustrating, especially after how well he did in the Sinnoh League.
It's a fine example to why I said Ash should have been replaced by now. If they used a different protagonist for Best Wishes, people would have sang a different tone.

Colress being a bad scientist was the only good thing in the "N arc"... Generation 5 games are meybe the bast games of the series... and the BW anime was unfortunately a tragedy...
What really drove me away from Best Wishes was the characters themselves, at this point I was more interested in the characters rather then how the anime went. And within the first few episodes were they introduced Iris, Oshawat, and how they made Ash act immediately made me lose interest in the show
I have heard that Oshawott was even supposed to evolve during the Plasma two-parter, so most likely we wouldn't have had to deal with its annoying attitude anymore. I honestly hate that this series was so heavily rewritten because it might have turned out to be something great if it weren't for that one damn incident.
@@decoral lol Oshawott always seemed divisive from even pre-launch. He's actually one of the reasons I loved this one so much. Always loved Oshawott since the starters in 5th gen were revealed, and loved his anime character/personality.

I'm surprised that over in Japan they think it's normal to throw people's hard work in the trash like this. What's keeping them from putting those episodes on DVD and slapping a huge warning label on the box to keep oversensitive people from buying it?

Ever since that controversy the Pokemon anime has been very adamant about making sure nothing that horrific ever happens again when associated with their brand.

Well, Im sure they wanted to keep It, but that earthquake was so bad, and killed so many people that Im sure people would hate Pokémon Best Wishes, and I think canceling the project and forgetting about It was probley their best oppinion, not a good one, but probley the best one.
@@IllustrativeArts836 I think the best solution would be to release a public warning that the events of the episodes don't have any asscociation with the incident, because they were created *BEFORE IT OCCURRED* and air the episodes regularly. And to be honest, they really didn't have that much in common aside from the damage caused to Castelia. The actual incident was an earthquake, whereas in the anime it was a fricking meteorite exploding with energy.
I remember when I first found out about this as unfortunate as it was, it kinda frustrated when I found out Ash's Oshawott was supposed to evolve in that episode too, they postpone the catching of crocorock, but not the evolution of Oshawott?

I believe they decided to keep it an oshawott to better fit tonal shift the series went through after the earthquake since he was a comedic relief character at that point and dewott are known for being discipline and serious.
Oh man I remembered this whole incident and how it affected the series back then. It surely was confusing. Yet I still enjoyed whatever new stories they come up with after the disaster. But the series did went really stale later on.
Thankfully Pokemom XY and XYZ came after that.

I liked the tournament arcs of best wishes, but that's about it. I have almost complete contempt for the series, especially with how they handled ash's character and his progression to becoming a strong Trainer.

Gen 7: Game mechanics slightly an improvement from Gen 6, but the 2nd most hated Pokemon anime (Alolan League was too rushed, never forget the controversial Ash vs Hau episode). Also the beginning of Pokemon Movies that didn't have a current connection with Gen 7.

The Alola league was 17 episodes long, every single battle mattered, was shown in detail, there are strong character motivations and some of the most epic fights of the whole series.
If there's a rushed and controversial league, it's Kalos' hands down. Only two fights were important, they were mostly just showing the Greninja form in a bland way, and the entire thing was overhyped for nothing.

How abt the fact that when Sword & Shield 1st game trailer was released, ShoPro was like: "Oops, we f***ed up S&M anime with too many unnecessary filler episodes & less time left to end the Alolan chapter. Writers, forget Alolan trials from the game & go straight to the league! Finish those ASAP before we launch new anime at the same time as Sword & Shield videogame." How abt the fact that even a Japanese Pokemon-related variety show already reveal a screenshot spoiler of Satoshi (Ash) holding Alola League trophy, accidentally or not to the point that the official Pokemon YT channel has turned off comments?
Best Wishes also gave the most contrived way to cut down Pikachu’s power level, a literal deus ex machina as far as Zekrom’s standing in the Pokemon world. While this would have likely been intended to pay off in the Team Rocket vs Team Plasma arc, it comes off a way to balance Pikachu for a new region as well as evoke Ash starting out regions by sighting a legendary.
I had come back to the anime after having mostly dropped off since AG, since I had really loved the games and had heard some interesting things about the faster pace and Zekrom foreshadowing. It had a bit of a controversial start with Pikachu losing to Snivy, but I accepted it as Ash getting knocked off his rhythm, no big. And I agree that whatever they had planned for us was completely derailed by the earthquake and everything else that happened as result. I kept trying to keep interest, but eventually gave up due to Ash's treatment, the filler, etc., and Cameron/TP made me drop the anime entirely until the MegaEvo specials got me watching XY.
It really is unfortunate what happened to this series, but it's clear that they worked hard to set things right with XY and SM, altho in different ways.
The thing about "A Venipede Stampede!" was that, in the original airing, Ash and company boarded the helicopter with Professor Juniper, but when the dub aired it, they cut out the parts of Ash and co. tagging along, implying that Juniper left all by herself.

What I enjoyed: many Pokemon captures again, actually having a different partner, a bit faster paced than DP.
What I didn't: Iris taunting Ash for being immature when she's pretty immature herself (sure Misty does this, but it felt that Misty does have times that she is responsible), Trip being discount Paul, characters that repeat their tropes and catchphrases a bit too much for my liking, Team Rocket being too serious rather than what they feel like in XY or even New Series which has more balance, and just an aura of soms obnoxiousness throughout the series IMO.
I enjoyed it enough but it felt like a step back from DP that while enjoyable and in hindsight wasn't really that bad is one of the weakest series of the animé for me.

Iris honestly did improve later in the series when the writers realized the audience didn't like her attitude lol, but Trip is JUST...thrash. Complete thrash. They saw the success of Paul so they made Paul2 and it couldn't have worked worse. Especially when Cheren was RIGHT THERE. After DP I would honestly be fine with Ash having a less intense rivalry for once, but NO, they just had to give us Trip. The situation becomes even worse when you realize that instead of Trip, we could have gotten Cheren and Bianca as Ash's main rivals, and have THEM battle with Ash acting as the battle judge, instead of Ash battling(and losing) to Trip and his Level 5 Snivy in the infamous episode. And don't even get me started on the Unova League.

I guess im in the minority that enjoyed 5th Gen. The games, the number of Pokemon there were, the mechanics, the music. And the anime was my personal favorite. It was like a reboot of Gen 1. So many favorite episodes I have of gen5 anime. Yeah I didn't like the Unova league arc either but the N arc made up for it.
So basically, imagine Pokemon 2019 but if the whole Leon vs Lance and Pokemon World Championships idea was scrapped.

I’m gonna say this, I know it’s not exactly relevant now but, Whatever you think of the black and white anime series, you have to except the fact that they learned from there mistakes and they didn’t give up. they chose to get better, and that’s what made X and Y and the Sun and Moon anime so great. they learned from there mistakes and it’s easy to see, they took concepts from BW and used them in XY and SM, for example, not having team rocket in every episode is a concept they took from BW and have done it ever since. I say this about the original series all the time, the original series was garbage, all the concepts they did in the original series (first 5 seasons of the show) were executed very poorly for the first 5 seasons, but they learned from there mistakes there and the advanced series was a step up, and they took it one step further and learned from the advanced series and that’s why the Diamond and Pearl anime was phenomenal and why it’s considered the best series before BW, the DPP anime wasn’t perfect but darn near. They shifted to a more story focused show when BW started, it was like soft rebooting the show by beginning a brand new style of writing, which was both a good and bad idea. it was good so the show wouldn’t become stale, but bad because there first attempt, just like the original series first attempt wasn’t the greatest, but either way they learned from there mistakes back then in 1998 and again in 2010, and we are in the golden age of the Pokémon anime where SM anime is amazing and the new gen 8 anime series is still story focused like always which is a better way to write a show. That’s what I take away from it.

I personally love the BW anime, even without nostalgia (maybe).
This was actually, or at least quite possibly, my favorite era in the Pokemon series. I loved 5th gen - the Pokemon, especially the starters, the cast, etc. It was also in a pivotal time in my life though, marking the end of an era for me personally and moving into family life which ended up awful, and pretty much ruined my life. Looking back at the excitement in 2010 and early 2011/2012 before things got bad for me - Best Wishes/5th Gen was a wonderful retreat in my memories and still is a pleasant time to remember for me. I'll always have that attachment to this gen.
I remember that I tried to pick the pokemon anime back up with Best Wishes, and I saw how it was promising...but then it fell from grace as you described.
That said, I've given the anime another chance yet again with the newest series, which will be verging on 15 episodes as of writing this, so hopefully it doesn't suffer the same fate as its predecessors...
The Anime of Black and White was good in my eyes.

The worst thing I find from Best Wishes was right at the end where they decided to write Tracey out of making any appearances despite having him in the intro for DA!
They say he went to help Misty at the Cerulean Gym, and then when we go back to Kanto in Sun/Moon he is absent from both Oak's lab *and* the Cerulean Gym... Pretty terrible way to write a main character out, they really should've fleshed him out better

The highlight of BW was The Team Rocket Trio acting serious and competent and Giovanni FINALLY taking an active role in the anime and confronting Ash for the first time.
Shame it did not last.
The only thing I can think of that saved best wishes was ash bringing Charizard, Ash and Professor Oak reminding us that he still has his old Pokémon like swellow, staraptor, Bulbasaur, and Tauros, and Alexa being introduced to bring hype to gen 6. But in my opinion what killed best wishes was ash’s incompetence, lack of a Strong new Pokemon, and the Unova league.
I really wish that after they didn’t do the arc, that they would move it to XY. XY was the most serious anime so far, and it really could’ve worked. Replace Team Flare with Plasma, and the power thing with Zygarde (cell form) and boom, you got a story.

Last year when Twitch marathoned Pokemon and messed up the schedule horribly for the 2nd half (going from a season per week Kanto-Hoenn to a season per DAY starting with Sinnoh) I decided to watch it on my own time with the format Twitch used for the first half, and Best Wishes was legitimately so bad I couldn't bring myself to finish it. As a kid I stopped early early gen 4 for the anime, but I LOVED experiencing gen 4's anime for the first time watching it in this marathon. Then got to Best Wishes and just immediately turned off by it, most days I had to force myself to watch the episodes rather than WANT to watch them. I nearly made it through too, I got to that stretch of 20 or so filler eps between the Unova League finishing & Ash departing for Kalos but just unfortunately was never able to push through that last bit of Best Wishes
I'm wondering why we didn't get to see Iris visit Kalos in XY anime and see Serena visit Alola in Sun Moon anime.
Well Best Wishes! started some tropes that still continue into the XY Series, the Sun & Moon Series and the New Series such as the Team Rocket Trio appearing less often, the Nurse Joys and Officer Jennies getting redesigned, the art style changing, Giovanni getting a new attire and the new music changing.
I think the writers did fairly well recovery-wise considering all of the tsunami stuff in real life.

After ash's BS loss in sinnoh I wanted to drop the series. I told myself give it one more go then Pikachu loss to a shivy...Pikachu who knew Volt-tackle...VOLT-TACKLE. I was so confused and just as upset as when ash loss the sinnoh league. Then they said he was still 10 years old and I realized I just out grew the anime 😔(and I was still in their primaryage demographic) . Like why could he not just be like 12 or 13 I dont think it would have made much a difference and things wouldn't be so confusing.
Even if the show is supposed to be for kids how can dora the explorer (went from 7-10 through the show) age and not ash.
I was thinking of giving it another go but I have heard how kalos was a repeat of sinnoh, and I saw how poorly written ash winning in alola was done...

It's unfortunate because this was the generation i officially got into Pokemon. But due to how the anime was handled gen 5 got a bad reputation amongst the fanbase.

I personally enjoyed everything of Best Wishes in Japanese. The episodes, movies and even the songs. One of my favorite episodes is still the Bouffalant one because of Tsutarja's reaction to having to wear an affro (Snivy in English). Also Best Wishes had the awesome Pokérap for gen 5, the English one simply existed and sucks in comparison
I know people might hate me for this, but personally, the Gen 5 anime is my favorite Pokémon anime. Great characters (Cilan for example), great Pokemon (like Oshawott), awesome and funny battles, and just good episodes overall. I’m probably saying this cuz it was my first Pokémon anime, but still, I love it so much.

This always was really depressing. The Pokemon Black & White anime would have been so good if they didn't have to retcon everything, causing the whole thing feel like a mess.
They've assured that the episode was meant to air at one point and that they've been postponed, which is completely understandable. But then it was fully scrapped in complete silence.
It's a shame that it will always feel like a sour point in the anime because of that, regardless if you had good or bad opinions on the series. It also led to people praising XY, but it's really not fair to compare due to this entire rewriting. XY managed to do things better, but by taking stuff from both the Black/White and the Sun/Moon games in the Flare arc.
Also, notice how each main character had a reason to oppose Team Plasma. Ash loves Pokemon, Iris grew with them and Cilan studies their relationship with humans. I feel like all of this was meant to come into play, but never did because they ended up having BW2 Plasma.
I'm not sure if Ash was meant to capture Krokorok in the desert. That could explain why he didn't appear for 30+ episodes at the time, but I don't think there's good proof of that. It's the same kind of case as thinking Cilan was meant to keep the Basculin from the other postponed episode.
As for Decolore Islands, it wasn't fully useless: Ash met Alexa and learns about Kalos, allowing him to visit it. Iris met Clair, which led to her interest in fighting her to learn more about Dragon types.
For those who wonder about what I mean by taking stuff from other games:
Black/White: the evil organization reveals and makes its most major and awaited move right after a league winner is declared. All of the region's gym leaders show up and reunite their strenght to help on the defeat of the team.
Sun/Moon: Blonde girl adopts a baby Legendary Pokémon who lives in her bag and has to learn more about it in order to return it to its home. A shady organization needs said Pokemon for their own ulterior motives and pursues them. The Legendary reaches its final form and delivers the finishing blow to the main villain.
I actually love black & white I grew up watching it & whlist it's not the greatest series I think it's decent series with cool moments like team rocket plots & episode N arc I actually like soft reboot thing it made the show fresh for me at least

Well I liked Beste Wishes except the league. But compaired to other seasons the in between parts not focused on Gyms and so on I really enjoyed. The interactions between the Pokemon were some of my personal favoirites and since that were the majority of episodes I had a good time. Ironicaly in XY that swaped. I didn't like the in between parts but the battles were great. So to me it comes down to what I want at the moment. If I want good fights Best Wishes is not the place to look at. But just having fun watching Pokemon do stuff I think Best Wishes does it really well. Thats why I like Ashs team they were fun to watch. In Kalos I really only enjoyed watching Goomy and sometimes the others.

I think that Pokémon Best Wishes is a divisive anime. I belong to the category where people say that Pokémon Best Wishes is amazing.
The first series of Pokemon Best wishes/ Black and White is all mess up because originally Team Rocket Jessia and James were in Black uniform and now they've gone back to to White uniform half way throught the episodes doesn't make sense. The same goes for the two parts episodes postones of Team Rocket VS Team Plasma that never aired since then or explain what has happen to the ancient rock they Team Rocket stole. So yeah this whole first deries of Pokemon Best wishes/ Black and White has gone down the drain.
You know I've been trying to understand why some people don't like Cilan (other than his catchphrase) and I think I know why now: he is a connoisseur of almost every job imaginable which means he has no real goal to obtain which also means he has no arc to go through to get to his non existent goal unlike characters such as Brock, Dawn, May and even Tracey had a goal, also for being an A class connoisseur, he has really bad taste in pokemon I mean, he has a freakin stunfisk for Arceus sake!
Regardless of what happened we should have still gotten the original team plasma arc. They could have easily just dialed back on the violent stuff and there was no point having all that buildup just to throw it away like that. Plus it looked more epic, grand and imposing than what we later got
The gen 5 games were amazing the anime not so much so much!

I remember when it first came out I was really excited for Best Wishes because with two new companions neither of which were based on the player character from the games it felt like a fresh start. However, the biggest problem is Ash himself that holds this series down.
It was Johto all over again, they had planned a story but a sudden event changed their plans and we got lots of filler that go nowhere instead. For Johto it was movie 4, starring Celebi, so the GS Ball was stuffed forever; and for Unova, it was a tragic earthquake.
There was a substantial rewrite due to the loss of Team Plasma early on, yes. But those "30 filler episodes" (several of which were not filler at all) you mention were already made and going to air even if the 3/11/11 disaster hadn't transpired. You can't just hastily cobble together episodes on the fly the way you mistakenly believe happened; that ain't how animation works.
You also forgot to mention that Tom Wayland a former director of the english dub stated in a Tweet from either 2012 or 2013 that the Team Rocket vs. Team Plasma two parter episodes where sent over to the dubbing company in America but at the time when the disasters hit Japan the dubbing of these episodes stopped plus he stated that he seen the episodes.

It really is a damn shame how lackluster Black and White turned out to be by the end. I remember liking it quite a bit when I was younger, but then slowly turning away from it as it went on. It wasn’t helped by the fact that I ended up hating XY and the first half of SM.
It had so much potential that will sadly probably never be realized due to the fact that Pokémon is kind of allergic to looking back at the fifth generation, and the 2019 series has no continuity whatsoever. It really sucks

I just hate how they handled some of the characters! Especially Skyla. In the video games she is a total sweetheart,cares about everybody and so much more! In the anime she is arrogant, unlikable, and a total snob! It's like they made her do a 180 and it's very upsetting especially for a long time Skyla/gen 5 fan! I prefer the video games! No offense to anyone who likes the anime!
And I remember when I heard about that horrible Tsunami and Earthquake! It was very upsetting to hear about it! We were playing a Pokemon Battle Revolution Tournament we had at a game shop for fun when we got the news. I stopped playing a bit for a moment of silence and prayed for Japan! Our Church prayed for them as well! Hearing about it broke all of our hearts! :'(

One particular issue, of the MANY issues, that I've had with Best Wishes as a whole was the fact that the writers had the need to give everybody a rival and crammed too many characters in the mix to the point where they feel like annoying one offs that serve no purpose than to add artificial development for the main cast. I can't even remember their names aside from bootleg Paul (Trip) and that one guy where they play the 'always get the name wrong' gag (Stephan).
Also, let me just say that Cilan is probably the most annoying character to ever exist in the anime. He basically turns any episode into what I can only describe as Dora the freaking Pokemon connoisseur. "IT'S EVALUATION TIME!" will forever describe his character and I hate it everytime he says it. Why is he a connoisseur for everything? He can be the connoisseur of my rear end for all I know.
Another problem is the Pokemon Ash has and how little development they get throughout the series. He caught a little more than average so he has less time to train them up compared to previous seasons. Just from personal taste I kinda don't like many of the Pokemon Ash had throughout the journey, (My most hated being Pignite for looks and Oshawott for annoyance). Snivy, Krookodile, and Boldore are exceptions for likeness, but even then his team kinda felt weak sauce compared to his power House of gen 4 lineup.
It's just my opinion, but BW is my least favorite Pokemon season and almost made me gave up on the anime all together. Thankfully, XY & XYZ did make up for it, even if it had its own issues.
