That was absolutely stunning, in the truest sense of the word. The song really went on a journey and her performance was just captivating. I didn't understand a word of it, but I felt every note.
Portugal is a sailors and fishers country. I'm Brazilian and my country was colonized by portugueses in the XVI century. So the Portuguese music has many references to the sea and the sadness of women that waiting for their men to return by the sea. This song, Canção do Mar (Sea Song) is about it.
One word...portugal...to its core. I should know. I am one of them. Proud of more than one thousand year history. And what you are hearing, it's pure history...

It's so nice that this video came out on april 25th, which is our (portuguese) national day of freedom from dictatorship. Also, thank you for your videos. they are amazing!
Dulce sings beautifully, no one can sing fado but us portuguese, those quarters of tones are our Arabic inheritance, Fado is very 'middle eastern' that's why it has that peculiar 'atmosphere'.
This is pure gold, both in the magical, impossible to describe in words, voice and being of Dulce, but also these very subtle and deep observations about singing. Much love to you from South Florida.
I was at this concert with my sister, back in 2005. Memorable concert! She's a wonderful singer and a great humble person. I met him once, years after this.
I love how you are very technical in evaluating these, the singing technique and "output", no matter what the language is (I'm a layman when it comes to music/singing myself). But also I love you have the sensibility to appreciate the different stuff going on, the emotional stuff - regardless if the technique is perfect or not and also regardless of the language of the words. Again, as a layman myself, I appreciate these videos for exploring all of that and also stuff I hadn't thought about in my favourite songs. Cheers and thanks for all your work.
My dear Beth, Fado is a deep melancholic type of music and to sing it perfectly you have to open up and share your soul and deepest feelings. It is not unusual at all to see the singer and the audience crying during a show.

“Fado” means “fate” in Portuguese. And most lyrics are very emotional bc they deal with the dramatic, losses, and love. Even if you get the emotions I recommend checking a translation of the lyrics. Fado is like poetry, so her emotions are on point with the words. In my interpretation she is comparing the sea to love itself, or maybe her lover. She clenches her fists to express how the sea is cruel and rough but then sings smoothly wondering if the sea is right about her heart. And it might just be my impression but all the ups and downs in the notes also reminds me of the sea’s movement
