What Do Designers Do?: Understanding Design

Designers are instrumental in a broad range of disciplines, including architecture, graphic design, industrial design, landscape architecture, service design and transportation design.
Prasad Boradkar, a professor emeritus of industrial design at Arizona State University, takes you on a journey to understand what a design career entails and what designers do. You’ll learn how industrial designers create consumer products, such as an office chair or a television set. Transportation design is a specialized type of industrial design focused on building automobiles, bicycles, railroad systems and more. You’ll learn about what graphic designers, user experience designers and interior designers do, including the design and creation of two-dimensional materials, interactive digital artifacts and interior spaces.
If you’re interested in a design career, this video may encourage you to start thinking like a designer. Some of the primary concerns that designers think about include beauty, utility and sustainability. Design is all around us, so let it inspire you to become a designer too.
