    Watching this to get inspired for this weekend's Dublin Marathon - what a brilliant video, thanks for sharing. The joyful optimism at the start vs the emotional and physical battle once the body starts to break down, what a perfect summary of the marathon distance. Well done on finishing, many in that position would have dropped out!

    i was in the worst shape of my life and decided to run a marathon that was only 40 days away. I only had enough time to get in 9 short training runs, but i was still pretty confident before the race (it's just a marathon..anybody can do it, right?). Well i did it, but it was one heck of a struggle, i definitely had to "pay the bank" from miles 18 through 26.2. Literally pushed my body the hardest it has ever been pushed.

    But there is no Eamon Glavin in the results. Bib 5074 is Noel Melvin. The race rules state clearly "You may not give or sell your number to anyone else". Any comment on this?

    • @EamonGlavin
      @EamonGlavin  5 лет назад +3

      Hey thanks for your comment Brendan! I was interested to see if someone would bring this issue up.
      At the beginning, I did my best to follow the proper registration procedures and rules, going through the process every time tickets were released, but the site crashed at checkout each and every time and I lost my opportunity to race. Hard luck, but sometimes that's the way it goes. I had resigned myself to not running the race until the opportunity to run arose three weeks prior to the start!
      I do believe there is a flaw with a rule that prevents runners from not being able to replace a name on the bib for what I personally view to be legitimate reasons for such a change. The fact that the organization wanted Noel to simply eat the entry fee after he had to pull out and not allow someone to run in his place is strange to me. If I were trying to contend for overall prizes or qualification times for more races, I wouldn't have gone through with it because clearly I'm not in the right age category for that!
      Now let's be clear, I fully realize what that rules intents are, preventing users/organizations from buying up a load of numbers to resell them for a profit and stop runners from competing in the wrong category. However, since there are only 22.5k runners, while other major marathons often deal with twice as many entries, I think there's an opportunity for a thorough name transfer system in the case of legitimate and outstanding circumstances that happen in life. Perhaps a booth at registration pickup where both parties must be in attendance to have the transaction go through?
      Would I have liked to run under my name? Of course! Have I suggested to some of my contacts in the race organization that such a transfer process could be implemented? I have! Hopefully one day there will be!
      I hope that wasn't too longwinded of an explanation for what could be perceived as simply an attempt at me trying to justify the decision!

    • @JasonX2

      Well to be fair, I did say in the description, "Ok, yes, I train for rowing, but definitely not for running. And that's a big ass difference!" I realize I'm definitely in way better shape than say, a couch potato who tries to go run one for the first time! Plus I have a pretty solid running background from high school cross country. But over the last 6 years since my last marathon, I can count the amount of times I've gone for a run/jog on 2, maybe 3 hands!
      Plus, I'm not a marathoner, nor a runner. I'm 100% a rower through and through, so being competitive, I thought it would be fun to try and see how long I could stick with the 3 hour pacing group - so I definitely paid for it in the back half. Plus it made for a good video title!
