What kind of work does a 32nd degree Scottish rite Freemason do to achieve the 33rd degree? Who decides if the work is sufficient to qualify for promotion? Are there documented criteria for advancement or is it subjective? Thanks for guiding my understanding of Scottish rite freemasonry
Well, the first thing is that a 32nd degree must first be honored as a Knight Commander of the court of honor (KCCH as we say). In most Valleys (local chapter) all the other KCCH masons will make nominations. Those nominations are then forwarded to the head of the Valley or Orient and then the final determination is voted on by the Supreme Council. The process is similar for the 33rd degree, but the selection pool is of the KCCH masons. There is no documented criteria. But if a Mason ASKS for that honor, tradition hold that he is automatically deemed to be unworthy.

Sorry but I have many questions. Many years ago I went through the blues and got my Masters degree went on to the Royal Arch where i went through the chair and then onto the Cryptic Council. Can you tell me what degree I have achieved. I am retired now and a widower from Scotland.
No. Masonry never got into banking. Many fraternities began life as mutual benefit societies, especially those that started in the post-civil war era. Many developed their own insurance brands and other things. Masonry opened old age homes and hospitals. But masons didn’t get into the other areas.
"Questions welcomed, but no conspiracy nonsense..." Deftly dodged that bullet, I see. I reckon all the questions I might have would fall into this category in some form or fashion.
I will answer any polite question. But question that start out with presuppositions that masonry is inherently bad or some kind of cabal don’t come from a place of curiosity or interest. Ask and I’ll do my best to answer. But I answer in the spirit in which the question is asked.
What exactly does it mean to find a mentor in Freemasonry? Just finding someone to help you better inculcate virtues etc? I love the idea of being made better by having men to look up to not only who are more professionally accomplished than I am, but also more virtuous and adept at living more meaningful lives. Is that what Masonic mentoring is, or is it more like being tutored in the esoteric symbolism and metaphysical teachings of Freemasons?
Two questions for you, friend: 1)If one aspires to strengthen the bond, and facilitate salience of/with the omnipresent omnipotence, would the lodge be of benefit? 2) if one has more time than financial capital to contribute are they welcomed equally when compared to those with the inverse?
The internet is full of crap about freemasonry, so it is very hard to understand what is true and what is not. You're probably asked this all the time, is true about what they say about the secret signs and handshakes to recognize who is a freemason? Or is it just another urban legend ? Thank you!!
When masons talk about secrets primarily that is indeed what they are talking about, secret handshakes, gestures and passwords. Mostly these serve as a tool for masons to test whether or not another person is in fact a Mason.
My mother and her mothers were eastern stars, and my grandfathers and their fathers were Masons. That being said the degrees represent master levels when they parallel to each other and each of the degree’s at 11 and so forth represents mastery of the one before. I could be mistaken, but I believe the levels up to 99 which represent mastery of the universe are revealed for those who have earned them by their work amongst others and their belief in all! And for reference they’re maiden names were swan, Bingham, and Haium
I noticed you mentioned harry truman was 33rd degree scottish rite mason. He was also a member of the royal order of jesters. My question is are they still a recognized subdivision of the shriners? I have spoken to some freemasons and many have said they never heard of that subdivision.
Shriner here. The Royal Court of Jesters is an appendant body that’s invitation only and they only invite Shriners to join it. From what I can tell it’s just an unhinged party group, so most jurisdictions are very wary of it to begin with
I’m sure there are individual masons who work for or with those groups. Just like I am sure there are members of other fraternities who work for and with those organization. But as a whole? No. We do not. We are just a fraternity despite tinfoil hat theories to the contrary.
I'm a TBI survivor and have cognitive disorder. I really try my best to control my behavior and to follow good role models but experiences blank spots where I just snap. Can I become a freemason.
Each lodge conducts its own investigation of petitioners, and within the rules of their Grand Lodge, makes a determination on who they will accept based on that investigation. Your condition is not automatically disqualifying in most jurisdictions. It would be up to the lodge you petitioned to decide whether it would be a problem, after they make a determination of how often you "snap," and how those snaps manifest themselves.
Just to clarify, the Master Mason or 3rd degree is the highest and sublime. Appendant bodies is not a continuation of your degrees but rather supplementary learnings illustrated by degrees as well. 33rd deg cannot be higher than the 3rd degree in terms of rank or prestige.
Right. Pretty sure I say that several times in the video. Thee degrees are not really "ranks" even though we call ita rank for shorthand. Each degree has a title, and the titles do not confer any authority, only denote that you have received that degree.
Technically, yes. But do we need to be so nuts about it? I mean, in the Grand scheme of things who cares which way it is. I mean if I wanted to go all crazy, I could lost all my titles in YR, KT etc. But I again think we can short hand it.
Who do I need to reach out to for a list or understanding of what my father did as a Scottish Rite Mason? Do I just contact my local lodge or is there an archivist that I need to reach out to??
I'm a mason and went through the York rite held the master's chair for the my chapter got the knight templar order and held the master's chair of my chapter 2 years after getting my masters mason degree you in my 3rd year in masonry I joined the Scottish rite and received my 32nd degree
@@ScottishRiteMasons I was initiated on November 18th 2010 and raised on October 18th 2011 went through the York rite December of 2011 through February of 2012 and went into the Scottish rite in the summer of 2013 and 2012 was the year I was in the masters seat in chapter I was supposed to be the equivalent of the dr warden for chapter that year but the brother who was supposed to be the sitting master in chapter that year died from a heart attack so I stepped up to be sitting there to honor his memory not only for being a brother but he helped me so much in blue lodge I wanted to repay some of his help
The 33rd degrees represents the 33 vertebrae's in the spinal cord. Once the serpentine energy travels through the 33 vertebrates, it acends into the 3rd eye, reaching true illumination. That's my understanding, but I'm not a freemason, so I could be wrong.
Brother from Canada here. Its slightly different here. Not much but different enough to confuse someone. A cool video could be to get a brother from Canada and highlight what makes us different and what makes us the same.
It depends on a variety of factors. The performance of each degree takes about 2 hours each. But if you mean from petition a blue lodge to 32nd degree? Usually 18 months or so in the USA.
It’s was always my understanding (or assumption) that the 33 came from the number of paths & sephiroth on the Kaballah/Tree of Life (=32) and the 33rd signifying Da’ath after the crossing the abyss or the attainment of Wisdom. Again, this is just what I assumed.
I've had a member of the masons. Approach me and ask me if i'm interested in joining. I'm still trying to decide. I'm leaning towards yes but I have some reservations and questions.
We are not commanded to read it. In fact, I would hazard to guest at nine out of 9 out of 19 33° Scottish rite Mason has never read it. I have read it because I helped produce the audiobook and the Kindle edition. So I’ve been through it a few times. I also know that you have never read it. You’ve googled a few things and you think you’ve got some accurate quotes, but the fact of the matter is if you go to a library and pull morals and dogma off the shelf - it’s pretty much readily available anywhere- you will find there is nothing scary or occult in that book at all. If you are comfortable with googling things and pretending you know what you’re talking about, then that’s on you, but if you’re claiming to be rational and intelligent, and not willing to go to the actual source, your claims are false. But have a nice day anyway.
I respectfully remain sceptical. No,I have not read Morals and dogma in detail. Those few words do make reference to hailing Lucifer though. Canadas prime minister is also a Canadian Scottish rite freemason. Not sure if I would want to be in the same club sir.
So you admit not only that you have not read it, but that you are unwilling to read it, and are simply willing to form an opinion based on a few words that actually DO NOT come from the book Morals & Dogma. Which means you are not skeptical, but simply forming a flawed opinion based on ZERO actual fact. NOWHERE in Morals and Dogma or ANY Masonic text is there a reference to HAILING Lucifer. Any man of reason or intelligence would attempt to gather fact before opining on ANY subject. Justin Trudeau is not a Freemason, and so therefore definitely not a Scottish Rite Mason. But you "heard it" somewhere and now state it as a fact. Another person will see your statement, and also the decide it is a fact. And the virus of lies grows. And you are a carrier. My invitation on this channel is always- go check sources yourself. You don't need to take my word for it- go do some looking on both sides of the issue and see for yourself. Morals and Dogma- the real version, not the "googled" version- is available in most libraries. The chapter with a reference to Lucifer is in chapter 19. It starts a paragraph before and states all Masons hate the works of lucifer. It then states that Lucifer means "light-bearer" and its a strange name for the Prince of Darkness. Pike says Is he the light bearer? Doubt it not. He blinds feeble minded and foolish men with his false light. Go read it yourself. *sigh* You won't. The easy path is foolishness.
@ScottishRiteMasons A very lengthy and expressive response, sir. Thank you for taking the time to ream me about what I really don't know. You are right. My only source of information on the subject is google Scrolling hours on end. I do this out of yearning to know. In the end, I've simply fallen down many rabbit holes. I humbly admitt I really know little. I apologize for any disrespect. I just want to know, but I obviously need to look elsewhere than google or just RUclips.
And please don't take my word or anyone elses; go get the book or buy the kindle version. It's full of old style writing, but if you take your time, you will see it is not scary at all and Pike (a staunch Christian) was definitely not a fan of Lucifer. Thanks for the note, have a nice day!
degrees continued to be added to a point and it stopped at 33. similar to there being 2 degrees in early craft masonry...there were not originally 32 in the SR...
I am curious about the 33rd degree, about how many people it takes to open a 33rd degree lodge. I don't know many 33rd degree masons and it just seems like to me that it would be very difficult to put on that degree. I'm not Scottish rite either, I know i could learn more about it just by joining. I know how many it takes to open a MM lodge and to put on a MM degree, but I know very few 33rd degree masons and it just seems very unlikely to have that many people to do the degree, unless I guess if it were done by the international group, maybe?? I really enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing. My home lodge is Florence Lodge #14, Florence AL
There are no 33rd degree lodges. It’s not like opening in the MM degree. We don’t meet as a group of 33rds. As far as the degree conferral, many people travel to Washington DC to receive the degree- it’s conferred once every 2 years. But larger Valleys with enough people will do it themselves.
I am not a mason but I was wondering if there will ever be any higher degrees in the future? Like, are the degrees set in stone or could they possibly change within the realm of what is already established?
Can high rank masons change parts of the order - brotherhood? Is the fraternity more like laws of science or the declaration of independence, in regards to its purpose and functionality?
I am interested in masonry, because my great grandfather was a mason, and I have met several masons in my life including a 32°. My sister introduced me to illuminati conspiracy years ago and I've been kind of interested from that as well. It's hard not to look at that pyramid and eye on the dollar bill for many generations seeing the design and not knowing much else about it left only with a general sense of wonder as to its origins.
Degrees have been updated periodically to make them more modern in language. It’s not a “dead” system that never updates. Anything is possible but it’s unlikely we will go beyond 33 degrees.
I have a theory as to why 33. Referring to Nicola Tesla's theory that 3, 6, & 9 being the numbers of the universe can be achieved with 33 degree. 3+3=6 and 3x3=9. Maybe?
Absolutely not. In fact if you ASK to get the 33rd degree you will NEVER get it. It cannot be bought. It can only be earned. The 1st through 32nd degrees are open to any Freemason. The 33rd is an honor and it is awarded to those who have served the community or fraternity for many years. And your post demonstrates the whole problem with society. "I heard somewhere..." Where? Who said it? How did they know? Are they a Mason or just spreading a rumor? Did they make it up to mess with you? You are jumping online and making rumors worse by saying these things.
The Grand College of Rites is a regular Masonic body, dedicated to preserving the history and rituals of defunct and inactive Masonic orders. grandcollegeofrites.org/
Never heard that one; certainly possible. Several of the first members of the Supreme Council in 1801 were Jewish and may have been familiar with the Sefer Yetzira. I think we can say "possible but unlikely". ~M
There are no benefits. It's simple an honor. You don't get anything except a white hat to wear at formal meetings. Masonry is NOT about "getting" things.
Sure. Right after you- as a Christian-tell me where in scripture that star is told as the “star of Lucifer”? It isn’t. The symbols were simply misused by bad guys in the 20th century. That star was first used to convey the 5 wounds of Christ. A further study of the history of your own faith will explore this.
When looking at the logo, the square is set at 90 degrees and compass set at 47. Interesting that 137 is the 33rd prime number and that a-z is 1-26 & capitol A is 27 which means capitol G is 33….
The square is at 90° because that’s what makes it a square. The compasses changes based on degree and Rite. And that’s a lot of jumping through illogical hoops to get to 33.
@jasonbond4248 The usual route in to Freemasonry is to approach someone you know is a Mason and to ask them. If you do not know any Masons, you simply need to Google Masonic Lodges in your area and apply via their website.
Initiation fees vary from Lodge to Lodge, but usually its a few hundred dollars to join, and annual dues in the US average $150. Your mileage may vary.

But between work, and my other masonic obligations in other appendant bodies, there just isn't time to add one more requirement to my life at the moment.
Sorry but I have many questions. Many years ago I went through the blues and got my Masters degree went on to the Royal Arch where i went through the chair and then onto the Cryptic Council. Can you tell me what degree I have achieved. I am retired now and a widower from Scotland.
We must travel at precisely 33x the speed of sound to break out of our atmosphere :)
Question,
I was noticing the fraternity OMEGA PSI PHI has their own credit union....
Does Masonry have a bank/credit union?
No. Masonry never got into banking. Many fraternities began life as mutual benefit societies, especially those that started in the post-civil war era. Many developed their own insurance brands and other things. Masonry opened old age homes and hospitals. But masons didn’t get into the other areas.
@@ScottishRiteMasons thank you for the reply. Would you know the insurance brands?
Knights of Columbus. Woodmen of the World, Mutual of Omaha, travelers of America to name a few. They are all over.
@@ScottishRiteMasons THANK YOU! I kind of figured TRAVELERS....duh, on my part.
Well done 🎉
Thanks Brother that was amazing - Master Mason Howick Lodge 314 Auckland New Zealand
"Questions welcomed, but no conspiracy nonsense..."
Deftly dodged that bullet, I see.
@@ScottishRiteMasons Why are women not allowed in the freemasons?
What exactly does it mean to find a mentor in Freemasonry? Just finding someone to help you better inculcate virtues etc? I love the idea of being made better by having men to look up to not only who are more professionally accomplished than I am, but also more virtuous and adept at living more meaningful lives. Is that what Masonic mentoring is, or is it more like being tutored in the esoteric symbolism and metaphysical teachings of Freemasons?
Two questions for you, friend:
1)If one aspires to strengthen the bond, and facilitate salience of/with the omnipresent omnipotence, would the lodge be of benefit?
2) if one has more time than financial capital to contribute are they welcomed equally when compared to those with the inverse?
1. Yes
2. Masonry isn’t “free” but it’s not cost prohibitive either. So, money is rarely an issue.
@@ScottishRiteMasons I appreciate your timely response. Congratulations on your progression.
❤thanks very appreciate
Congrats, Mr. Maynard! I'm getting voted in this Thursday, I'm super nervous
I am sure it will be great!
That's exciting!
@ScottishRiteMasons Mr. Maynard, I did it!!! I got elected, I'm so excited! Your channel helped me and kept me motivated. Thank you so much!!
No goat riding??? Turned it off when i heard that 😂 cheers for the vid
They lie through their teeth to the profane. Don't ever trust anything they say
Are there any restrictions on age or race...
Over 18 in most places. 21 in some states. Open to men of all races, creeds and faiths.
When my father passed away, I do not remember running across a white hat. Is this something that remains in the lodge?
No. It would have been his personally. He may have given it to someone.
I’m from South Africa 🇿🇦. How do I join??
Don't
Well done Maynard!
No. This is not the truth. There are no “levels up to 99” in Scottish rite Masonry.
Congratulations. Thank you.
I noticed you mentioned harry truman was 33rd degree scottish rite mason. He was also a member of the royal order of jesters.
My question is are they still a recognized subdivision of the shriners? I have spoken to some freemasons and many have said they never heard of that subdivision.
I am not a member of the Jesters, so I can't really speak to it. It exists in some areas, not in others. Some of those smaller groups come and go.
Shriner here. The Royal Court of Jesters is an appendant body that’s invitation only and they only invite Shriners to join it. From what I can tell it’s just an unhinged party group, so most jurisdictions are very wary of it to begin with
Do you guys have links with MOD, DOD, DARPA, FSB, MI6 or IDF?
I’m sure there are individual masons who work for or with those groups. Just like I am sure there are members of other fraternities who work for and with those organization.
But as a whole? No. We do not. We are just a fraternity despite tinfoil hat theories to the contrary.
🎉🎉🎉 congratulations sir you deserve it,
I'm interested to be a member how can are I start sir
In masonry? There’s a video here on our channel. Check it out.
Can you provide me a Grand Lodge in Pretoria South Africa?
What about the 33 Strategies of War? Is that linked with 33° Free Mason?
No.
@@ScottishRiteMasons Plus it isn't right to be called a 33rd degree freemason rather a 33rd degree scottish rite mason. I wish you well Brother.
Technically, yes. But do we need to be so nuts about it? I mean, in the Grand scheme of things who cares which way it is. I mean if I wanted to go all crazy, I could lost all my titles in YR, KT etc. But I again think we can short hand it.
Thanks you bro ❤❤
So when you enter the craft, you start off as an entered apprentice?
That is correct.
Who do I need to reach out to for a list or understanding of what my father did as a Scottish Rite Mason? Do I just contact my local lodge or is there an archivist that I need to reach out to??
Where was he a Scottish Rite Mason? What area?
How do I join ?
I'm a mason and went through the York rite held the master's chair for the my chapter got the knight templar order and held the master's chair of my chapter 2 years after getting my masters mason degree you in my 3rd year in masonry I joined the Scottish rite and received my 32nd degree
You've been busy!
@iamblacksand Yes, you're wrong. Sorry.
Is there a book in print that has been out for at least 30 years. It describes the 33rd degree ceremony imprint. It's called "The deadly deception."
Seen it. Not even close to accurate.
Thank You ,very revealing , I've only heard negative things , my mind is changed
Brother from Canada here. Its slightly different here. Not much but different enough to confuse someone. A cool video could be to get a brother from Canada and highlight what makes us different and what makes us the same.
How long does it take to get degrees?
It depends on a variety of factors. The performance of each degree takes about 2 hours each. But if you mean from petition a blue lodge to 32nd degree? Usually 18 months or so in the USA.
i was thinking many times about joining masons, still can't make my mind about it
@businessfactsandtips What are the pro's and cons for you?
Hi my name is John from the Bahamas is there a age limit to becoming a free mason???
18 is the minimum.
There is no upper age limit. You could become one at age 100 if you wanted.
It’s was always my understanding (or assumption) that the 33 came from the number of paths & sephiroth on the Kaballah/Tree of Life (=32) and the 33rd signifying Da’ath after the crossing the abyss or the attainment of Wisdom. Again, this is just what I assumed.
No. Really we think it doesn’t have an esoteric meaning. It’s just how many degrees there are.
I've had a member of the masons. Approach me and ask me if i'm interested in joining. I'm still trying to decide. I'm leaning towards yes but I have some reservations and questions.
No real mason will ever ask you to join. You must ask. It’s one of our little rules.
Since blue lodges have been declining, some lodges to allow recruitment to some extent, don't shoot the messenger! @@ScottishRiteMasons
What about Albert Pike? As a 33rd degree mason were you commanded to read Morals & Dogma (by Albert Pike)? Have you read Morals & Dogma?
Going to joining to masonry ,, guide me
Are there any decent York rite channels? I’ve been interested in joining the York rite but I’d like to check it out first
Not that I know of.
degrees continued to be added to a point and it stopped at 33. similar to there being 2 degrees in early craft masonry...there were not originally 32 in the SR...
Well. Yes and no. The system upon which the SR is based didn’t have 33. But the supreme council since its inception has had 33 (1801)
@@ScottishRiteMasons thank you
I am not a mason but I was wondering if there will ever be any higher degrees in the future?
Thanks@@ScottishRiteMasons
I have a theory as to why 33. Referring to Nicola Tesla's theory that 3, 6, & 9 being the numbers of the universe can be achieved with 33 degree. 3+3=6 and 3x3=9. Maybe?
How many years it would take someone to achieve 33rd degree ??
At least 10. Usually longer.
@@ScottishRiteMasonsI heard somewhere you can jump grades if you have a lot of money or fame is this true ??
Absolutely not. In fact if you ASK to get the 33rd degree you will NEVER get it. It cannot be bought. It can only be earned.
The 1st through 32nd degrees are open to any Freemason. The 33rd is an honor and it is awarded to those who have served the community or fraternity for many years.
And your post demonstrates the whole problem with society. "I heard somewhere..."
Where? Who said it? How did they know? Are they a Mason or just spreading a rumor? Did they make it up to mess with you? You are jumping online and making rumors worse by saying these things.
What is the grand collage of rites. Please
The Grand College of Rites is a regular Masonic body, dedicated to preserving the history and rituals of defunct and inactive Masonic orders. grandcollegeofrites.org/
32 degrees = 32 paths of wisdom? Sefer Yetzira?
Any connection?
Never heard that one; certainly possible. Several of the first members of the Supreme Council in 1801 were Jewish and may have been familiar with the Sefer Yetzira. I think we can say "possible but unlikely". ~M
@@ScottishRiteMasons ok...
Can you bulletpoint what benefits I would expect to receive once achieving this highly esteemed status?
There are no benefits. It's simple an honor. You don't get anything except a white hat to wear at formal meetings. Masonry is NOT about "getting" things.
if from entered apprentice to 33° how many years will it took?
A minimum of 10 years I would say. But usually much longer.
who is the great architect of the universe?
There is a video on this on the channel.
Great video as always.
Have a great week ahead

Congrats on becoming a MM.
What's the difference between AF&AM and F&AM?
Being Christian. How do you explain the upside-down star of lucifer? I've noticed its posted on many lodges.
Sure. Right after you- as a Christian-tell me where in scripture that star is told as the “star of Lucifer”?
It isn’t. The symbols were simply misused by bad guys in the 20th century. That star was first used to convey the 5 wounds of Christ. A further study of the history of your own faith will explore this.
@ScottishRiteMasons when it's upside down it's twisted.
Thanks for your reply. But it has meaning and it's mockery.
Would you have information on a (PHA) Sovereign Inspector General?
There's a video here on the channel regarding our relationship with our Illustrious Prince Hall Brothers.
And that’s a lot of jumping through illogical hoops to get to 33.
how to get a referral to become a mason?
@jasonbond4248 The usual route in to Freemasonry is to approach someone you know is a Mason and to ask them. If you do not know any Masons, you simply need to Google Masonic Lodges in your area and apply via their website.
Congratulations brother!!
Like how much do we need to start being a member ?
Initiation fees vary from Lodge to Lodge, but usually its a few hundred dollars to join, and annual dues in the US average $150. Your mileage may vary.
Great! :))
I will get mine. No matter what. Brothers are here
