  • Most living expenses have gone up in price since 1980 (even when you adjust for inflation). That includes cars, homes, education - almost everything, except for our paychecks. Here's why paying for a house, a car and a college degree was possible in 1980 - but not so much today.

    No waitress could afford a house payment, car payment and college tuition in the 80's, or at any other time. That's complete nonsense. Back then, you had double-digit interest rates on homes, and you couldn't buy one without close to 20% down. Cars you could only finance 3-4 years, max. Double-digit rates for those, too. Everything was cheaper, but avg household income was also FAR less. Less than 30k until about 1986. Avg household income is over 100k now. No waitress was making that much back then.
    No, a waitress or waiter putting themselves through school drove the same car their parents gave them in HS, or a $500 beater, shared an apartment with 2 other people, and scrapped and scrounged to pay for school. Ate ramen and other super cheap food.
    Same as you can do now. People just refuse to deprive themselves of things today...now they have to have a fancy phone, Netflix, Amazon, nicer car, go out to eat and drink all the time, are fat as a result, and then complain that they can't afford things like their parents could back in the day.
    While conveniently ignoring all the differences, or acknowledging that their parents who did that, did it by just barely hanging on, and working multiple jobs instead of going out for Starbucks.

      When people save money it hurts the economy. The problem isn't necessarily that there are rich people but it's that rich people don't and won't spend enough of their earnings to stimulate the economy. Also corporations hide their money overseas which hurts the government's ability to provide basic services and stimulate ingenuity. Give one person a billion dollars and see how many homes, cars, and how many movies they go out and see. Now take that same billion dollars and give it to a 1000 people and see how many homes, cars, and movie watching is in demand.

    • @DankHotdogs
      @DankHotdogs 9 лет назад

      JYang33 "Saving money hurts the economy"
      I. I just can't. The amount of stupidity in you is so fucking large, I barely know what to tell you.
      And do you wanna know why the upper class doesn't wan't to pay so many taxes? Because they earned their money. And don't say "Well look at Trump, he inherited his money" because barely any billionaires pass down billions to their children, and even then Trump holds lots of businesses under his belt

    • @JYang33
      @JYang33 9 лет назад

      On a macro level saving is bad because that lessens demand in the economy. If everyone saves everything no one would be spending any money... On a micro level of course you want to save money for hard times, but that hurts the economy. You're not taking that money and going down to your local restaurant or buying the latest gadget, thus stimulating your local economy and creating demand for jobs. I should have clarified what I meant, but I thought it was obvious I was talking about the macro economy.

    Dumb video. A new car today is better than on in 1980. Housing is always changing, you can find a cheap house someplace else. College tuition is rising due to student loans and federal grants, even at that you still have cheap options such as community colleges and junior colleges. We have a problem in college of too many people going when they don't even have remedial courses.
    Whoever did this video didn't do much research.

      I think the point went over your head. Wages haven't kept up with the cost of living since the Reagan era, when the clearly failing trickle down economics were introduced. Because of this, we'll make similar money as our parents at our age but everything cost much more. Those paychecks aren't stretching anymore. Cars are better today? Well back in the day, those old cars were better than the cars that came before. It's not like we went from Model Ts to Camry's over night. And even if you buy and old car, you'll probably end up spending more on repairs the you paid initially. Housing has changed? People can find cheap homes? Sure in the middle of nowhere with no real opportunities to make something out of yourself. What if you need to live or be near the city for work? Good luck finding a decent apartment in your budget or making rent. When FDR introduced minimum wage, his intention was to enable all Americans to afford basic necessities plus a lil sum sum. Nowadays, you can barely afford the basics. That's what this video is highlighting.

      Kira Cofield Wages have kept up though. Cars today are better and cheaper. Same with computer, cell phones and other forms of technology. The reason why housing is up is because the federal government, those on the left, felt like people deserve a home and thus made it so banks had to give out loans to people who simply can't afford them.
      With college tuition the federal government is giving out loans and grants which increases enrollment without increasing the number of professors and staff thus tuition goes up. Not everything cost more but the things that do is because of the federal government and especially those on the political left. If you want I can get into more details about it but the political left and their policies is what causing the increase in prices in some areas when prices should be going down (and have in most areas of the market).
      " Those paychecks aren't stretching anymore. "
      Actually people have more disposable income today than in the past.
      "Cars are better today? Well back in the day, those old cars were better than the cars that came before."
      Cars today are safer, last longer, and get better mileage. They are better and cheaper.
      I told you why housing went up, I can get into more detail with that if you want.
      "When FDR introduced minimum wage, his intention was to enable all Americans to afford basic necessities plus a lil sum sum."
      He did it for pure political reasons. There isn't one single good reason to even have a min. wage. It is a job killer and one of the reasons prices go up.
