  • Just a week after placing 1st in class at the St. Thomas International Regatta, Nala faced off against the toughest competitors in the Offshore Multihull class at the BVI Spring Regatta. The light air regatta provided Nala and crew with new challenges; after a few adjustments Nala found her groove and finished the regatta strong, landing in 2nd place overall, ahead of an Outremer 5x, three Gunboat 60s, the supercharged Gunboat 66 Extreme H20 and behind the always formidable Gunboat 62 Elvis.

    Nala would have won if the rail meat would have been on the correct side of the boat !

      In light wind, being on the leeward side can be faster.

      @@LoanwordEggcorn How?

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 2 года назад

      @@jamesaron1967 Mostly due to hull design, some boats are faster when heeled over.
      In light wind, if there's not enough wind to heel the boat over enough, putting people on the leeward side of the boat to artificially heel it over can make for a more efficient hull moving through the water.
      In other words, monohulls are generally designed to be heeled over under sail, and have a more efficient hull shape in the water that way,

      @@LoanwordEggcorn OK, I see what you're saying. An IMOCA 60 which is an extreme example is definitely more efficient with considerable heel.

      @@jamesaron1967 Yes, the very beamy but squat hulls can get thinner in the water when heeled over and have less hull in the water that way. The shape of the hull is also carefully designed for that heeled over condition.
      If they sat mostly flat on the water, they may have a lot more drag due to more hull area in contact with the water.
      Same for other monohulls, but perhaps to a less extreme extent.
