    When going out on the water for the day my VHF is always in hand. What else do you make sure you have in your bag for a day on the water?

    Nice review 👍.
    IMO the antenna shoul be flexible you as-noted it also longer /taller to get that range in case your swamped or in the water. Do they make a larger/ taller portable antenna for this handheld?

      Feel like he said you can hook this up to a fixed mount antenna

    This by far is the best review of any VHS radio, and the reason I chose to buy it over others ! Very detailed, but have a few questions:
    I ordered the Standard Horizon HX890 with MMSI feature. If you do not set that up can you still use it to call the Coast Guard, and talk to other boaters ? A warning apparently comes up when you first turn it on about unable to transmit your location. It seems like a very good device, and well-made.

      This a Marine VHF radio that can be used in the US, Canada and International (you need to set it to the corresponding area as they use different frequency allocations in each area).
      Channel 16 (156.800 MHz) is standardised across the world and is the distress channel, it will work in any area (as long as there is someone that can receive your signal) there is a difference when you are two miles offshore and when you are in the middle of the Pacific or Atlantic ocean.
      If you haven't got the MMSI number, then you cannot use the distress button on the back to alert the coastguard of your position.
      But you can still shout MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY, this is vessel... at location. .. We are (sinking, medical emergency, engine blown, Man over Board etc.)
      So, yes this radio will work to contact the Coastguard on Channel 16 (156.800 MHz) or any vessel close by on any approved channel.
      This is a good radio as it has the GPS feature if you have the MMSI number and will make a great investment in some extremely important life saving equipment.

      @@HarrySwettenham26 ~~ For my son as his coworker gave him a 21foot 1985 Four Winns Liberator with newer 396 cubic inch engine in absolute perfect condition. My son loves fast cars, and now into fast boats, so I got him that radio for any emergencies .

      thanks for the kind words. Scazwh 26 is correct that it will work without the MMSI number but it is a good idea to register and get the number to be able to use the great features inn an emergency. We have a video on how to get an MMSI number for free. You might want to have your son check it out. It doesn't take long and won't cost him anything. Thanks again and thanks Scazwh 26 for the great answer.

    Good review and comments. I came here wondering if I really needed one of these or just use my cellphone. I recently (re)learned that these things are disposable technology (like cellphones) and you’ll be doing well to get 5 or 6 years out of one before Standard Horizon (and other makers, I’m sure) stop supporting them and it becomes a brick. But a couple of hundred bucks over 5 years should be affordable if you’re already throwing money into a hole in the water. Just remember to take it out of the box and use it. It makes it last longer.

    I went with the hx890 over the hx891. The bluetooth headset support is super gimmicky and if you are using this with a paddlecraft, it is completely pointless using that over the handheld radio to begin with.

    Do you need a waterproof case? Which one? Thanks

    • @AquaLifestyle
      @AquaLifestyle  3 года назад +1

      Most handhelds offered today are waterproof and do not need a waterproof case. the Standard HX890 in this video is waterproof and floats and does not need a case.

    Why is this handheld radio not bright orange? Easy to find in the dark, or if it is dropped in the water. (Salt) waterproof?

    • @AquaLifestyle
      @AquaLifestyle  3 года назад

      Orange would be a good color but it does have a water activated strobe light that is automatically activated should it be dropped in the water making it easy to see. It is waterproof and can withstand the saltwater environment.
