Just when the world needed it the most, the Avatar franchise has returned! Amidst all the hype, I thought it would be interesting to analyze what exactly made this franchise the phenomenon that it is today.

@@themultiverseisbroken4365 Almost every single movie out there closely resembles other movies. Let's not even mention superhero movies, for a start.
This particular objection is really easy to make, because there are actually only a few somewhat similar movies to the Avatar films -- Fern Gully, Pokahantas, Dances with Wolves come to mind -- so those titles are automatically brought up in criticisms as being similar. Other movies have hundreds of similar movies to themselves, but since people expect that type of movie, the objection of similarity never even occurs to them.

Avatar’s story is simple but pretentious dumbasses don’t like that cause they did the story to be filled with constant exposition or talk about heavy stuff so they themselves can feel smarter, like they’re watching sophisticated. Also, just hating Avatar now is a trend with baseless criticisms.

I think it comes down to plot vs character development and how Cameron gets the points across. Plot, Cameron will literally just have Jake tell you through narration what they are up to. But the character development and moments is all show don’t tell, and it’s done outstandingly. The emotional journeys of the characters in both movies are incredible, and it’s all done through little moments and expressions. Not an ounce of film time is wasted when you are thinking about what the characters are feeling. Love these movies so much

You people are stupid. The characters are generic and one note. How we are supposed to think of the characters IS told and not shown, and its message is downright propaganda-like. The character moments are also extremely predictable without any interest or any nuance. The Way Of Water is pretty much just the first movie.
Effects can only do so much. You need a good story and characters to make it a true experience. Something these films lack terribly. The reason they are big at the box office is because they are so big on effects and theater experience but nothing more. I actually prefer to watch not in theaters because that allows me to see the film the way it really is without the biased theater experience filter.
I real film is one that immerses you no matter the viewing. Either in theaters or at home on a streaming service.

Part of it is the sheer cinema experience, which a lot of movies don't really create or capitalise on. They're on a big screen, but they're not really elevated as a result. Avatar is, and its one of the most (imo the most) immersive film series that exists, and virtually all aspects of it are approached fully. Very, very little breaks the illusion, and having such unmatched visuals, blended with a believable world, and believable but insane action sequences, makes the movies an incredible thing to watch on the big screen. Top Gun was much the same, and I honestly wish more movies would go for a bit more realism in their big set pieces. One thing to consider is how well Cameron's other movies hold up over time, decades later, and it is a testament to how much work and dedication went into not only making them look good, but giving them memorable set pieces and sequences, especially compared with some other blockbuster films in recent decades.

James Cameron knows how to create an experience that the audience feels lucky to witness. If the other studios are smart they will move away from superhero films and instead create their own cutting edge space epics. Imagine if Pixar stopped making those tired cookie cutter family films, and instead made a billion dollar prestige space opera with the most advanced CGI. The future of the blockbuster is about creating other worlds that look as real as ours. World's with deep lore and immersion that they can make 5 films inside of, and then rake in the money when they are put on streaming services. Cameron is making the most expensive and profitable streaming series of the future here. He's a genius.

The Avatar films have done so well because they have legs, remaining in theaters for many months. They invite repeated re-watching on the big screen (preferably in Imax 3D), and many MANY people have done so.
Why do they have legs? Mainly (in my opinion) because of the absolutely gorgeous visuals, and the obvious care that all involved in their production have taken, going above and beyond what is normal.

Because it's a perfect film for theaters. It's got a story that's not too intense, that anyone can pick up and understand. It's not like the MCU where you have to have seen the previous 30 movies to understand the plot and the characters. It's also visual eye candy. Every single frame is appealing to your senses. For the same reason 1 was so successful as well. Sure, the story is cookie cutter, but when I watched that in Imax 3d in 2009 I was absolutely absorbed and blown away. It felt real, like I was right there. Few films can match that feeling and Avatar Way of Water captures it again and then some. James Cameron knows how to draw an audience in, to even the most basic of plots. Titanic was just Romeo and Juliet on a sinking ship, but he drew us into that as well. Movies don't have to have insanely crafted stories to entertain an audience. Tried and true story lines are tried and true for a reason, and they've been told in one way or another since we started recording our stories around fires before we even learned how to create language and writing.

Simplest reason would be - Really good, really big blockbuster movie released during the Holiday season = Big Cash
A more complex reason is the psychology of it - It is like the prettiest and most ethereal travelogue you could imagine. It has a father figure and family unit portrayed in a positive light. It shows the struggles of being a sort of 'middle child black sheep' of the family WITHOUT demonizing any other members in the family.
It was also a good old fashioned traditional movie experience. If you wanted to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home, you had DECADES of cinematic homework to do. You had like 10 previous Spider-Man film appearances to watch to make sure you were primed and ready to go for No Way Home. Clearly people in the US were on board, but internationally it was more of a hump.
For Avatar: The Way of Water ALL you had to do was to go back and watch the first Avatar. No tie-in shows or comics, no spin-off movies that were all "required reading" for this new film experience. Like Top Gun....you watch the first movie, then you watch the 2nd movie, simple as that. Like the GOOD OLD DAYS of movie franchises.

I mean, outside of the MCU most of them have been met with a lot of eyerolls and skepticism and don't really take off.
The Conjuring "universe" worked on the scale of low budget horror. But the DC Extended Universe has been a constant struggle, the "Dark Universe" actually kind of failed to get going twice(Dracula Untold and The Mummy)
I think there were one or two others that didn't ignite. Even the fairly successful "Monsterverse" with Godzilla and Kong only really found success by being more of a linear, one-film-at-a-time franchise as opposed to trying to turn into some multi-release simultaneous "shared universe"

Eh, I don't know that people necessarily care about Avatar as a franchise. If that were true, there would've been huge demand for these long awaited sequels, which there wasn't, and it's story and characters would've had a much bigger impact in the decade-plus since the original. What people are responding to, I think, is both the positive depiction of a reasonably healthy family at the forefront of the story, but most especially, the fact that they feel they need to see James Cameron show us something we've never seen before on screen. In other words, I think people are coming for the spectacle of seeing the technical marvel and innovation of the visuals. That's all I think it is, honestly. It's a novel and impressive movie on a technical and graphical level that demands to be experienced in the theaters. I just don't think people would have responded to Avatar in the years since the original if people's interest in the franchise had anything to do with the story or its characters, because people starting undervaluing it as soon as other movies started doing similar and equally impressive things with its motion capture, MCU, The Hobbit, and Planet of the Apes in particular. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if people are basically just going to stare at the cool CGI water and soace whales and trying to figure out what's real and what isn't. To be fair, I do agree that it ultimately boils down to having "the experience" that was made to he seen in theaters. Other than James Cameron, but I think only Christopher Nolan consistently understands this.

AVATAR is not "one-note" or "simple." Just because you don't get LOST in the story and plot (two different things) doesn't mean that the story is "simple." It means that the storyTELLING is masterful. Every character, whether in just the first film or so far across both films, is nuanced and complex, while also being grounded in their own backgrounds. In other words, characters don't magically change their motivations or jump to unfounded conclusions just to serve the plot. The entire fabric of the AVATAR stories moves every element forward intentionally. Please rewatch DANCES WITH WOLVES, FERNGULLY, and POCAHONTAS to reacquaint yourselves with how flat, one-dimensional, those stories (and plots) are. Not to mention how Cameron is combining male and female myths in his larger and new ecological myth, he is expanding on the themes he's established from the beginning. The successes of the AVATAR franchise are not solely due to the spectacle or the loving care of the filmmakers given to the viewers VISUAL experience. It's due to the whole thing being a complete and persuasive package, and that began with the scripts and the themes. If I'm not mistaken, by the end of the 5 films, I think the over-arching theme will be "How do we humans relate correctly to the planet on which we live?" This is not about Na'vi. It's about HUMANS.

Asking this because I'm genuinely wondering: Do you think it might be because these films offer the closest experience to playing a videogame to people who don't usually play them? A channel named Loverboy Media has suggested this as well in a video and I found that take to be very interesting, because as someone who is very much into playing videogames, I just feel like the movies don't feel to me like everyone is describing them for themselves. They don't feel all that immersive to me contrary to what I hear all the time, the worldbuilding feels quite shallow (ofc games can often take a lot more time for it though!), and the rather basic storytelling bugs me more than it seems to do for other people. I'm genuinely just asking for opinions, do you feel like that might play into how popular the movies are, maybe especially among people that aren't into gaming as much? Everyone's free to disagree with that take, just interested in other people's experiences :)

@@themultiverseisbroken4365 Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :) I'm very curious about that as well, and I really hope they put a lot of effort into that game and give the fans the best they can. I'm a little concerned since the technical superiority of the movies will be very hard to carry over into a videogame - I have no doubt it will look good, but I feel like a game inspired by Avatar almost requires being as visually impressive as a game of the current generation can be, and whether Ubisoft can handle that remains to be seen. Eager to see more of it, it could definitely turn out awesome. Fingers crossed!

Saying, "We need more people who care about the movies they make" is great and everything -- it's no big secret -- but how are corporations supposed to produce artistic drive?
You're asking them to acquire the very thing that their job is designed to eliminate: novelty and risk.

That's what directors are for. The corporations make the business decisions while the directors pour their heart and soul into something their passionate about.

I dont think every movie needs to have a lasting cultural impact or presence to be mega hits. Avatar and avatar 2 probably made tons of movie because people wanted to go watch a movie that doesn't require you to have watched a 6 other movies and tv shows to understand whats happening.

You still know: it's all about money. It's all about the numbers. If you do 2B 10 years apart, it's sadly still less than 500M twice a year - however sh*tty those movies may be.
Hollywood are bean counters; sorry to say that.

Avatar 2 is magnificently beautiful. It's awe-inspiring. However, that's it. The story sucked, the acting is horrifically bad. The bad guys motivation makes zero sense. The word bro was used more in this one movie than I have ever heard in my entire life. I have seen both movies only once. This is my own experience. If people love this, if people constantly go to see it, that's nothing but a great thing for theaters.

I may be an outlier here, but I actually really dislike the Avatar series. The environmentalist messaging is so heavy handed it makes my eyes roll into the back of my skull and the second one butchered the nuance the first one had. Yes, the first one had nuance. The humans did try to be peaceful with the na'vi, and then Jake Sully comes up, betrays every human on earth for some alien tribe ruled over by, essentially, a world-spanning parasite god (I am biased yes, but I will give a fair shake to the Na'vi in that it was their home under threat and they had every right to be defensive overit, but the humans had tried to teach the na'vi and maybe see if they would be willing to move at some point.)
The first one I merely disliked, the second one turns humans into mustache twirling bad guys from saturday morning cartoons that are killing baby seals to make a fur coat. There is no nuance anymore there, just Snidely Whiplash cackling madly.

I feel kinda similarly. It's entertaining on a superficial level, and it does have fantastic visuals and worldbuilding, but upon any closer inspection, it doesn't really work for me. If it was just trying to be a fun action adventure movie, fine. I'd be less critical, but they're trying to be these profound statements, and they really aren't. Their approach to environmental issues are kinda cringe, unhelpfully lacking in nuance, and borderline, arguably outright misanthropic. The writing of the second was is honestly kinda dumb in certain places, and even if the details are obviously different, it's structure is overtly a rehash of the original film which itself is basically a rehash of much better films (I don't hate the plot even if I don't love it, so I don't hold that against it in the original film). It can improve, but it'll take better writing in the sequels. The Pilgrim's Pass channel was right. Princess Mononoke handles these environmental issues and how humanity relates to the natural world with far more maturity, nuance, understanding, and compassion than Avatar.
